Podcast: Reviewing 'Hansel & Gretel', 'Movie 43' and 'Parker' and Talking 2013 SAG Awards

Plus a little talk about J.J. Abrams getting the 'Star Wars' directing gig

Rope of Silicon PodcastIt's Friday and today's podcast is late as I had to see Stoker this morning at 10 AM, but nevertheless we are here and bringing you our reviews of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Movie 43 and Parker. We also talk about J.J. Abrams getting the Star Wars: Episode VII directing gig, the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards and answer several of your questions, Over/Unders, Buy or Sells and we continue to Play the Percentages.

At the beginning of today's podcast I also mention how we will be soon taking your questions directly from a Google Voice account, which you can call and leave a message for us at (925) 526-5763, which may be even easier to remember at
(925) 5-BNL-POD. Just call, leave us a voice mail and we'll start adding those to the show hopefully next week.

As always, I have broken down this episode on a minute-by-minute basis if you would like to skip ahead and below I have featured the information on how to download the podcast, find us on iTunes or merely just listen in your browser.

  • 00:00-00:57 - Introduction
  • 00:58-5:50 - We saw a bunch of trailers
  • 5:51-6:28 - Thanks for the new iTunes reviews
  • 6:29-9:04 - Future podcast news
  • 9:05-10:15 - Randoms
  • 10:16-12:07 - [Listener Question] Who are your favorite characters on The West Wing? [Travis]
  • 12:08-20:06 - Few more randoms and brief box-office draft talk and why do studios release these awful movies in January and February?
  • 20:07-25:36 - [Listener Question] I have to disagree with one of your Oscar statements in regard to the Academy preferring serious movies over all else. While as a whole, I agree with this so far that comedies are rarely recognized. That said, in the past 15 years alone, such mainstream and or lighter movies have won Best Picture; Shakespeare in Love, Gladiator, Chicago, Return of the King, The King's Speech and The Artist. One might even argue The Departed, which though a drama, is seeped in action and dark comedy, while more "serious" movies like Letter of Iwo Jima, Babel and The Queen were all available in that category. [Susan]
  • 25:37-30:29 - [Listener Question] When discussing Kathryn Bigelow, Laremy said the Academy has been institutionally sexist for 80 years. Laremy, can you clarify - do you mean there's a specific instance where a female director merited the Best Direction Oscar but didn't win? Because I can't think of one - until this year. Or are you speaking of something else? [Jeff]
  • 30:30-36:25 - [Listener Question] I'm confused by the mixed message regarding "group-think" of Academy voters. You mention that voters don't all sit in a room together and agree on how to vote, but then almost all of your Oscar prognostication seems to be based on group-think (De Niro sounds good), lemming behavior (Silver Linings Playbook is hot right now), collective narratives (no need to give Bigelow a second Oscar), etc. Is it not possible that a voter votes based on personal opinion? Similarly, regarding the Weinstein discussion - if I'm an Academy voter and think Silver Linings Playbook is the 6th best movie of the year, why would I vote it 2nd just because Weinstein called me? I have no idea how or why these voters vote, but I'm even more confused now. Do these voters have as little integrity as all that? [Jeff]
  • 36:26-37:26 - [Listener Question] If the Academy nominated 10 films for Best Picture this year, what would have been the 10th and final nominee? [Frank]
  • 37:27-42:47 - [Listener Question] I can't understand the obsession of my fellow cinephiles with lists. i tried to compile my own personal favorite films list on imdb- i started with 50 then 100 movies, but i gave up when i realized that i left out so many movies i really like as much as those that did make my list. the best of the year lists are ok, but the best ever lists are ridiculous and dishonest. i agree with Peter Bogdanovich who wrote when sight&sound best ever lists was announced that those lists are impossible and anti film culture. why can't people just like the movies and talk about them without ranking and rating them? [bruce]
  • 42:48-44:35 - [Listener Question] Should action movies with a mid to low budget, like Olympus Has Fallen, spend their money on special effects or good big name actors? [Scott]
  • 44:36-46:55 - Parker review (read Laremy's review here)
  • 46:56-52:00 - Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters review (read Brad's review here)
  • 52:01-1:03:57 - Movie 43 review (read Laremy's review here)
  • 1:03:58-1:07:19 - [Listener Question] As far as the comment about Dark Knight being lessened because of Dark Knight Rises, I have to disagree. Sequels can lessen a franchise, sure, but I don't think something like Empire Strikes Back should be penalized because of the prequels (or even Return of the Jedi) just as Dark Knight should be able to stand on its own despite the disappointment of DKR. [John D.]
  • 1:07:20-1:13:29 - [Listener Question] What do you think of Armond White? [Trishana]
  • 1:13:29-1:22:00 - Over / Under

The Winter 2013 Movie Box-Office Draft competition involved both Brad and Laremy "drafting" ten films each in hopes of scoring the largest net total by taking a film's worldwide gross subtracting two-and-a-half-times the reported budget. The film must be released in January and February of 2013. The draft took place on December 21, 2012 during the RopeofSilicon Podcast which you can listen to right here.

Listed above is all the most recent data as of this post. Budgetary information is not necessarily accurate and will most likely not be accurate until closer to or after each film's release.

Great podcast, love the changes you guys are beginning to make.

    Listener Question:

Regarding your discussion over the percentage of people who would prefer to watch a great 'sad' movie, do you think it's easier to put together a well-made film that's also morose and depressing or a quality one with a happy, positive outlook? Personally, I think that at this point, making the more bleak film is the easier choice considering how much there is to be cynical about and that it's much simpler to make someone feel a negative emotion as opposed to a positive one. I don't mean this as a slam on morose films, but merely an observation on the process from a screenwriting/filmmaking perspective. How say you guys?

Based on your description of Movie 43, it strikes me as some executive saw how funny and popular celebrity Funny Or Die videos became, decided to basically string a bunch of (unfunny, ripped-off) Funny Or Die shorts together with a weak overarching narrative, and pass it off as a movie. Is that a fair analysis?

  • https://twitter.com/TooMuchHamza Hamza Zain

I feel like you guys are gonna end up regretting telling me I can call in and do impressions.

    Just one question this week:

Why is it that film-goers seem so much more forgiving about January releases than, say, a September/October release. For instance, talking to friends of mine, they instantly dismissed films such as Hyde on Hudson Park and This is 40 (both films were bad) yet are willing to give Movie 43 a chance. Is it because the former films are released at a time when there are several other very good choices, where as the former is released with films of equally bad quality?

I've been watching a lot of British material lately. Movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and TV shows like Luther and Sherlock (both BBC shows). Why do you think the dialogue and grammar in british movies and shows are much better than the American ones? Are we just dumbing it down for the American audience? [Nav]

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/seanfast/ Sean Fast

man, how awesome is Luther? i freakin loved that show when I watched the first two seasons on netflix.

i think there are american shows with awesomely written dialogue too, but they get drowned out by the multitude of Honey Boo Boo and Jersey Shore crap on tv. Shows like Justified, Mad Men, etc. have excellent dialogue.

I don't know if you guys saw it, but a certain someone at Awards Daily was tweeting during the SAG awards and reacting to Lawrence's speech. There was a little aside about how they "thought David O. Russell's had autism..." and then they went on to barb about how she singled out Russell for his bravery but then, here comes the lowest of the low, "well how is a movie about someone with bi-polar help for someone with autism?" There was more but it's all just so disgusting to me. I know this isn't really a question but I just thought it was such ignorant thoughts. Here's a link to the main little rant they had... If being Laremy's new best friend gets me one step closer to a cup of coffee brewed by the ridiculously expensive Podcast Mansion Coffee Maker 2000, then I fully accept any and all responsibilities.

Probably a little late to make it into the next podcast, but here's just a few contributions for next time:

Buy/Sell (can also be Playing the Percentages since there are a lot of B/S already):
-John C. Reilly security guard abuses his power by "arresting" Brad or Laremy for trying to take a picture of him after a screening
-A B&L listener attempts to track the Playing the Percentages segment of the podcast in memory of Chad

    Listener Question:
What is the proper thing to do when you are watching a movie with a family member and they just won't stop talking? I ask this because whenever I am watching a movie, my family seems to think it's acceptable to walk in, sit down, and simply talk all the way through. And whenever I become frustrated and yell at them to be quiet, they seem to think I'm the crazy one. [Criterion10]

A lot of people often talk about how a movie's ending can really escalate it (i.e. The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects). What are some examples of movies where you loved it all the way up the ending and then were completely turned off? [G-Man]

What types of questions would you ask people if you hosted the Oscar pre-show? [G-Man]

When he's not gobbling down protein, what's Laremy's favorite cheat meal? [G-Man]

    Over / Under:

600 - Comments on the Oscars live blog [G-Man]

5 - Years before there is a RopeOfSilicon meetup to watch the Oscars [G-Man]

    Playing the percentages:

% of interviews for Star Trek: Into Darkness where J.J. Abrams is not asked about Star Wars Episode 7 #ParamountHasToBePissed [G-Man]

re: your first question, how about The Mist anyone? I loved the short story and enjoyed the movie up until the horrible ending they rewrote for who knows what reason...

Brad: "Boom! Here's my ass!" Classic. :-)

I also love how your 'Movie 43' discussion basically comes down to two sentences.

Laremy: And so there's [insert the preposterous thing of your choice]
    Brad: Of course!

    - 19.5 voice messages left at BnL's voicemail during the first week
    - C, Brad's grade for 'Stand Up Guys'

    - 'Movie 43' will deservedly be awarded the Worst Movie of 2013 at next year's Razzies

    Play the Percentages:
    - % there will be a new 'Before...' movie in 2022
    - % for this combo to win at the Oscars: Argo/Spielberg/Day-Lewis/Lawrence/Hathaway

Watch This or Watch That (John C. Reilly Edition):
    - 'Days of Thunder' or 'The Perfect Storm'
    - 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' or 'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby'
    - 'Cedar Rapids' or 'The Dictator'
    - 'Boogie Nights' or 'Magnolia'
    - 'Gangs of New York' or 'The Aviator'
