Rope of Silicon PodcastWe are two days away from the Oscars so you know today's discussion is going to have plenty of Oscar talk, but also in there we had another run-in with the crazy movie screening security guy and we'll also talk about the Weinstein Co.'s dealings with the MPAA, Sacha Baron Cohen's ban from the Oscars, The Hunger Games, Over/Under, listener questions and reviews of Act of Valor and Wanderlust.

We also gave away another prize for the best listener question/comment/topic and continue to urge you to keep submitting your questions and topics, they add a great bit of listener interaction, plus you could win some free stuff. Doesn't hurt right?

As always, I have broken down this episode on a minute-by-minute basis if you would like to skip ahead and below I have featured the information on how to download the podcast, find us on iTunes or merely just listen in your browser.

    • When you first hear about an original film (something not based on a book, comic, board game, sequel, etc) what about the project entices you to see it the most? The Director? The Actors? The Screenwriter? Since you guys avoid trailers for the most part I assume that with original works you don't know much of anything about the plot, so what about those types of movies gets you most excited & why? 1. Loved you referring to the odds for Best Director Brad ;)

Sounds like Project X was no good, didn't think it would be but was hoping it was ok.

Dujardin v Clooney is still the only one I'm thinking is up in the air. I still have Clooney ahead, will be interesting.

    Over Under:
0.5, The Academy will have a Best Comedy category in the next 5 years.

    Question:

All this Brad Pitt talk (I am a big fan btw) had me thinking; if he retires in the next couple of years (there was talk of that I believe as a possibility) which one movie role of his is most deserving of an Oscar in your opinion?

  3. Snicket

Since the Oscars are a snooze fest this year (and almost every year) you two should have a friendly wager, If Brad outguesses Laremy, Leremy has to sing a full 3 minute rendition of "Man or Muppet" on the next cast, If Laremy outguesses Brad then Brad has to do the Project X interview with those girls. Everybody wins.

Going into this year are there any films you hope don't do well, just so we don't have to see more of the same kind of movie. The Dictator comes to mind, and I hope more found footage style movies take a hit. Any box office surprises? Any underdog films going to blow up at the box office or is a sure bet going to tank? What mix ups would you like to see?

Also, I received my Cuckoo's nest Blu-ray today! Very nice set, thanks again!

  4. Brian Rose

Of the nine films nominated for Best Picture this year, Which film do you think will be recognized as the greatest film not today, but in the next 10-15 years.

Personally I think The Tree of Life will gain a major cult following and later will be recognized as a film way ahead of its time.

  5. Darth Agnan

What do you think of people who pay to see a trailer, watch it and leave before the movie starts?

Like paying for Meet Joe Black just to see the trailer for the Phantom Menace. (Old reference, but that's the only example I can think of right now).

  6. mfan

I'm with Laremy on the guess that The Weinstein Company does not fund the MPAA. TWC just had to borrow $150 million for cash flow purposes. Meaning it is only a few flops away from insolvency.

    • Brad Brevet (Post Author)

You may be right, but the Weinstein's just paid off their Goldman debt and are looking to secure a new funding for new projects. The $150 million thing you are talking about actually closed last month. Get the full story here if you're interested.

    Question:

What would you two like to see next year in the oscars that would make you guys personally enjoy it more?

Segment:(more for Laremy since he is a "reader"

Books you have read recently that should be made in to a film or HBO(of course) series and who should direct/run the show?

    some over/unders

.5 oscar noms for Bill Murray in Hyde Park on Hudson.

1.5 Oscar noms for Bradley Cooper in career.

1.5 superhero films this year that open over $100 million

1.5 Big Ten teams in the Final Four

.5 team from LA makes NBA finals

  8. Rach

Do you ever have a hard time liking someone after they tell you their movie opinions? like when you're friends with people and they're like "sherlock holmes 2 was the smartest movie ever!" and you can't respect them as a human being anymore?

  9. Pe

I had high expectations for Act of Valor and was let down alot. Was it just me, or did it seem alot like watching something based off Call of Duty? Just wondering. Havent listened to the podcast yet, but I really hope Project X, 21 Jump Street, Hinger Games, and American Reunion end up being good.

  10. darnoc

here in the uk one cinema chain is introducing d-box technology into some of their cinemas for the john carter screenings

basically the seat moves shakes etc in sync with on screen action but it doesnt seem to be a motion simulator seat – can this ever ever be considered as something that all action films will have to start thinking about as well as 3d and imax

heres a link to the chains webapge which includes a youtube advert for d-box technology http://www.cineworld.co.uk/news/316/detail

ps i shudder to think what sex scenes in movies would become like with this technology haha

  11. Chris

Listerner question: What were Your favorite and least favorite moments at the oscars this year?

  12. Mikey Sylwer

Great podcast, here's a few topics:
    Over/Under-

    1.5 'Muppets' Sequels

0.5 More seasons of NBC's 'Community'

1350 more points scored by Jeremy Lin this season

2.5 more encounters with the 'Security Guard' in 2012

And my question is to Brad,

Where does the name 'Rope of Silicon' originate from?

  13. Darth Agnan

A couple of listener questions, oscar related.

Do you think that, one day, a very well made documentary could be considered for Best Picture? After all, they do have foreign language or animated films that get nominated for best picture.

Who would you like to see hosting for future oscars?

  14. Flo

First of all: Great podcast as always. Love listening to you guys!

I also have two listener questions for you:

    1. Do you think the Weinstein Company had an major impact on Meryl Streep's "Best Actress" win over Viola Davis?

    2. How surprised were you that "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" won "Best Editing". I'm asking because that was my favorite moment on yesterdays Oscars. I really liked how Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter who accepted the award, were totally stunned. Often the winners act surprised but one could see that they really were. That felt nicely authentic and down-to-earth and I guess that's why I liked it that much.

    3. Who do you think will win an oscar first: Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio

    Over / Under's:

5 oscars wins by one movie at the 2012 academy awards

3 movies winning more than one oscar at the academy awards 2012

    @ Brad: 3 movies rated with A+ in 2012

I apology for my bad english.

    Greetings from Germany

  15. Lukas Mix

    Hi there, pilgrims.

    Here's my question:

If you could revive a deceased actor/actress in his/her prime,
    1. who would it be?
    2. could he/she survive in his/her profession considering todays market enviroment and audience demand?

Basically, I just want to know who you miss the most.

To be honest, I'm quite happy that the Oscars are behind us, since I feel a bit oversaturated with Oscar talk (in general.)

Good guest spot on the /film-cast, Laremy.

    Stay golden, B&L-boys

  16. Kristen K.

Is there a book series that either of you would like to see made into an HBO series? Game of Thrones & True Blood have done well for the network, is there another series in a different genre that would create a great new TV series?

    A few Over/Unders:

2.5 more seasons of True Blood now that show runner Alan Ball is stepping down

3.5 More Oscar nominations for Aaron Sorkin in the next 6 years

    And a segment idea:

You could do a Movie vs. Book segment where you could briefly compare a book & the film adaptation & decide which you think is more entertaining…
