  • 00:00-2:52 - Introduction
  • 2:53-5:02 - Show notes
  • 5:03-11:05 - Book talk
  • 11:06-19:05 - Brad has a book idea
  • 19:06-28:10 - Talking the "Game of Thrones" finale
  • 28:11-32:20 - [Listener Question] Which sequel do you think is most likely, if at all. Friday the 13th, Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street? Surely they can't be rebooted again as all were rebooted relatively recently (accidental alliteration). [David Delaney]
  • 32:21-34:44 - [Listener Question] What was the last book to screen adaptation where you felt the movie actually improved upon the source material? [Josh P.]
  • 34:45-36:00 - Trailer talk
  • 36:01-38:33 - Box-Office Challenge Update (chart below)
  • 38:34-40:37 - Brad watched a clip from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • 40:38-41:32 - [Listener Question] Is there an actor from your childhood or teenage years that you would love to see in a Tarantino movie? I would choose Michael Beck, he played Swan in The Warriors and Hunter in Battletruck. He was a really cool guy and for a while was tipped as the next big thing. And then Xanadu happened [andyluvsfilms]
  • 41:33-42:57 - This Week on DVD & Blu-ray
  • 42:58-44:04 - [Listener Question] Hope you guys are feeling better. I found myself watching Watchmen the other night and i got to witness that preposterous sex scene (fucking hallelujah) for the 1st time since I'd seen the film in the cinema. Then yesterday, I was watching the new honest trailer for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This reminded me of the scene where Megan Fox is straddling a motorcycle, in a frankly pornographic pose, while on a phone call. So my question is, who do you think is the bigger minsogynst, Michael Bay or Zack Snyder? And do you feel there's anyone worse? [David Delaney]
  • 44:05-45:49 - [Listener Question] Are there any movies that you feel that are so bad they're good? Would you still give these movies an F, or would their campy charm make you bump up the grade a smidgen? [Hudsucker]
  • 45:50-48:33 - Over / Under
    • $140m domestic box office for Annie. This is what 1982's version did in adjusted dollars [andyluvsfilms]
    • 25 is the number of poop and fart jokes in Dumb and Dumber To [Magill Foote]
    • 2.5 Terminator movies after Terminator: Genesis [Magill Foote]
    • C+ grade for 1995's "Powder" from Laremy since the film is apparently about him [robotsrule]
  • 48:34-51:27 - Buy or Sell
    • Brad was tempted to use 'He's a junkbag' when chatting with Jeff Wells [andyluvsfilms]
    • Harrison Ford has the line "I got a bad feeling about this" in Expendables 3
    • Inside Out is yet another disappointment for Pixar [Hudsucker]

    • % on RT for the next movie to win Best Picture [Hudsucker]
  • 54:25-57:27 - #GoodTweets
  • 57:28-57:52 - [Listener Question] Do you think that Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc's pit? he was heavily armored, had weapons and a jetpack, although possibly damaged [andyluvsfilms]
  • 57:53-1:00:01 - [Listener Question] What are areas of the film-viewing world that you would love to be more schooled on? Whether it be certain genres, types of films (Japanese cinema, film-noir, etc.) or a certain director's works. [Steve C.]
  • 1:00:02-1:03:48 - Randomness and Michael Bay movies

The Summer 2014 Movie Box-Office Draft competition involved both Brad and Laremy "drafting" ten films each in hopes of scoring the largest net total by taking a film's worldwide gross subtracting two-and-a-half-times the reported budget. The film must be released in May through August 2014. The draft took place on April 29, 2014 during the RopeofSilicon Podcast which you can listen to right here.

Listed above is all the most recent data as of this post. Budgetary information is not necessarily accurate and will most likely not be accurate until closer to or after each film's release.

The outro music on this episode is Clint Mansell's "In the Wall Side 2" courtesy of Death Waltz Recording Company.

Ready Player One has tons of references to '80s culture and nostalgia, so that might make it more adult if they keep that spirit in.

  • robotsrule

New pod!! Let the angels rejoice.

  • Joe

As far as talking about movies that you could do a commentary for, it'd be interesting to do a Whoop Dreams commentary. You mentioned not being able to talk intelligently about any movies, but for Whoop Dreams that would work pretty well. Brad can ask questions, Laremy can explain things, it wouldn't be overly long, and you'd get more people to watch it.

Also, I paused the podcast to post this before I forgot, so if you mention this same thing in the next 5 minutes then this comment just seconds the idea.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

Hmmmm, that could be a fun idea.

      • Steve C

I would also be in favor of this idea. I don't have hulu yet but have been really wanting to watch Whoop Dreams.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

It's free on Hulu, you don't need Hulu Plus

I don't think Arya took The Hound off her list. I see it as if she did kill him in that situation, 1. it would have been merciful and she's learned NOT to be merciful with her adventures with The Hound and 2. this is my main point... it's that it wouldn't feel like SHE killed him because he would die regardless due to the wound. So he wouldn't have died due to her, so why kill him and be merciful anyway? would be her thought process imo.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/TheLastEquivocationofBrist/ Michael

In summation: Arya is kind of a dick.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Steveothree7/ Steveothree7

I really feel that the actual explanation for this is the writers messed it up. Arya and the hound travel together in the book and Arya does leave him for dead. However, they never build up their relationship in the book. They don't ever bond. When she finally leaves him for dead, she has reason to. She's a POV character, so you know why she does it. The series built these two up and established a relationship between them (which I enjoyed, btw) but when it comes time to leave him, it's just kind of out of character for her. Just my opinion, but I think the relationship should've been written a bit differently, knowing what the end result was going to be. Otherwise it's a little confusing and as Michael said, makes Arya look like a dick.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/maja/ maja

I agree - I never read the books so the decision for her to just leave him for dead seemed to be completely out of character for her and made her out to be evil which she has not been portrayed as at all up to that point.

  • robotsrule

I love listening to B&L but I hate Michael Bay movies and especially Transformers movies. The prospect of listening to two plus hours of a Transformers commentary is like being given a gallon of cherries jubilee ice cream. It's still ice cream, i'd rather eat it than asparagus, but it's the worst flavor of ice cream imaginable. I guess I'll listen to it, but I won't like it.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/navaneethks/ navaneethks

About the Dragons, they are her children and she is not training them. Guess what happens to kids who are not disciplined? And even after this incident with the kid, her decision is to lock them up instead of trying to discipline/ train them. Bad decision.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Steveothree7/ Steveothree7

She fully acknowledged she really doesn't know how to rule. That's the point of her staying in Meereen. And her problem with the dragons is that she, as well as anyone else, doesn't even know how to train a dragon. They've been gone for hundreds of years. I don't think you can train them. Visery's said something key in season 1. "The brave men did not kill dragons. The brave men rode them." I think that is going to be key.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/JimmyDiamies/ Jimmy Diamies

Brad, what parts of The Hound vs Brianne's fight did you find to be too unrealistic? I loved it, the length, the brutality but I will concede that I found 2 parts unrealistic. It didn't take away from it for me but when he gets her down, drops 2 rights on her chin then a headbutt.... it's over. Also grabbing a sword in your hands should never work but I found it cool as a big Hound fan. Very sad Arya and him are not cruising around killing people together anymore. Their scenes were among my favorites for the season.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

The length as a result of the brutality. I just thought it went on a little too long, but I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, because it's a minor nitpick is all.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/JimmyDiamies/ Jimmy Diamies

Fair enough, was just curious. I was very entertained watching it because of the length and brutality, whereas the Mountain vs Red Viper fight was also lengthy, quite violent at the end and I did not enjoy it nearly as much. I contradicted myself there but The Hound and Brienne were trying to kill each other from the start of that fight and there was no dancing around, taunting, or feet sweep with an arm. Ridiculous. Unwarranted post but needed to say that because I am a little bitter that both my horses in those fights got beat. So sad. Any chance someone comes along and saves the Hound? Always thought he would be the one to kill his brother.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

Yeah, it's a very entertaining fight, but it's like a Rocky fight (which I also enjoy), but there is only so much pounding one person can take before they are mush. :)

Hey Laremy, how about feeding that Laremy.com ...I'm tired of handing out free clicks ;)
On a slightly more serious note I suggest to make some music recommendations or even some sort of brief production diary about your experience in making Film Critic.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

Laremy, thanks for redoing the song. I'm still confused how you're voice hasn't made you a pop sensation yet, but I guess it is just one of this world's many injustices...

  • seanfast

Brad : you were contemplating why trilogies are so much more common than other movie sagas and why 3 was such a popular choice. I have thought about this before too and my best guess is that it closely matches the 3 act structure of many stories. You can tell a 3 act story for one movie or book, and then make each book/movie an act in a larger arc for a character. The original star wars trilogy is a good example of each movie having 3 acts, and each movie being an act in the overall trilogy.

Just my thoughts as to why 3 feels natural to writers. Im sure there's also some marketing reasons pertaining to what audiences are comfortable and used to as well.

I thought of a new game. You know the cheap little "Critic's Consensus" about the movies? Those things have started to drive me insane, so I decided to do a game about guessing them. Here are a few with the answers in the reply. (Don't look at those, Laremy)

    1. __________ is surprisingly messy and perhaps too smart for its own good, but Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd's chemistry is enough to overcome many of the movie's flaws.
    2. While the cast is outstanding and the special effects are top-notch, the latest installment of the _______saga suffers from an unfocused narrative and an overabundance of characters.
    3. It doesn't reinvent the action-thriller wheel, but __________ offers a sleek, reasonably diverting reboot for a long-dormant franchise.
