The Winter 2014 Movie Box-Office Draft competition involved both Brad and Laremy "drafting" ten films each in hopes of scoring the largest net total by taking a film's worldwide gross subtracting two-and-a-half-times the reported budget. The film must be released in January through April 2014. The draft took place on December 13, 2013 during the RopeofSilicon Podcast which you can listen to right here.

Listed above is all the most recent data as of this post. Budgetary information is not necessarily accurate and will most likely not be accurate until closer to or after each film's release.

I love the possessions vs. experiences question, I ponder that myself.

      • andyluvsfilms

I have a horrible relationship with money which is partly the reason why I ask. I'm forever changing the goal posts when it comes to savings and can't seem to enjoy it.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

the molestation thing was just one example :)...he isn't all bad I'd say...just a lot of it.

    • Albert

As someone who tremendously despises both sides of the aisle, I can safely say that there are more people whom I like on Fox than there are on MSNBC. No, I'm not a fan of Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, and the like, but Fox Business certainly has many level-headed conservative and libertarian thinkers.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

Yeah that's the word, level-headed...I see your point...it would be nice to see more of those on both sides.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

I was just giving you (or more precisely, O'Reilly) a hard time. I think O'Reilly is a blowhard, but he has his moments.

    • Justin Golding

Ever since he was sued for sexual harassment by one of his producers and had to settle out of court, I can't take anything O'Reilly says seriously. Every time he gets on his soap box and demonizes someone, I just shake my head and remember 2004 and all the horrible stuff.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

Laremy, I wasn't trying to say your movie would be trash. I was saying that the general public wouldn't get it, i.e. Killing Them Softly.

    • Quique Smith

I think they got that you were kidding. So I would assume Laremy isn't going to suddenly despise you (unless he did prior to your comment).

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

Yeah, we were just kidding. Sorry about the RT Quotes thing, I actually really like playing that one. The Travers one was great.

  • seanfast

"It's the movie trailer equivalent of a fart." - Brad Brevet

Please please please let me see this appear on the movie poster...

  • http://filmemignon.blogspot.com/ Corbin

Quick side note, I don't know if this is relevant, but Amazing spider-man opened on a Tuesday for 4th of July, and over 6 days it made 137 million. Don't know if that factors, but just found it interesting.

  • ryanmcc

This is a bit out there but I have a more easter related question. Recently I noticed that you put Passion of the Christ as one of your favorite films of one year and I have to ask...why? The film is two hours of a guy getting tortured with little artistry. The film lacks the direction of Steve McQueen and it has now become clear that any meaning that was supposed to be taken out of the film was possibly anti-Semitic. I personally don't get how people ever viewed this movie as anything other than morally questionable exploitation.

  • Stonecutter

I've gotta say, Laremy's negativity towards his kickstarter does nothing to help convince me to donate to it. I understand having doubts about whether it'll succeed or not, but the combination of him saying there's no chance and saying "well maybe I'll get around to asking Vince or other people to help" doesn't make me want to put any money forward. You already put in the work to come up with the project, make the video, and get over $3k from people on kickstarter, why are you broadcasting that people shouldn't even bother? Seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to at least broadcast some positivity about it.

    • http://www.film.com/author/laremy-legel Laremy Legel

      Word hurt.

      • http://www.film.com/author/laremy-legel Laremy Legel

Oh, and for everyone else, Brad's never done a Kickstarter project, so his advice of "talk to Vince, talk to Dave" isn't exactly world-beating.

Naturally, I will talk to them, and they will support the project, but the trick is to have constant support instead of giant swings. So timing that appropriately requires actual thought beyond "just do X".

        • http://www.film.com/author/laremy-legel Laremy Legel

In summary, if you don't believe in the project, or don't like my attitude (as you perceive it), then don't give. I've supported 60 projects because I believe with all my heart in the idea that art has value, that croudsourcing is better than the existing power structures, and that we're all better off when we're in this culture together.

But I don't believe in tailoring my emotions to meet the artificial construct of someone else's expectations. The way I live is my way of coping, and if you don't have empathy for that then we don't have much in common anyway.

          • Joe Kaminski

I didn't mean it to come off that harsh, I was just listening and bummed out by the negativity. I've read the book and thought the kickstarter looked exciting, but hearing you be so pessimistic about it doesn't seem like the way to sell it to other people. I guess I hoped it to be more constructive criticism than how I wrote it, but I would think that you saying "Yeah we've gotten some funding in so far, it's a long way to go and I could really use the support to get there because I'm excited to make this movie" would convince more people than saying "Yeah we've gotten some backers but there's no chance that this'll ever happen because it's already a lost cause, so everyone is going to end up getting their money back anyway."

Either way, I apologize for the overly critical attitude. I'll donate to the kickstarter when I get home tonight.

          • robotsrule

Yeah Laremy. You need a can-do attitude on this. Because if I can get that DVD and combine it with the book, that's twice the surface area for a makeshift plate for eating my rice cakes.

Speaking of rice cakes, I usually don't eat them. I typically am doing the low carb/paleo thing which sounds like what you're doing now. When you switch over to a fat burning vs carb burning diet the first week is probably going to leave you feeling low energy but it will pass. Also if you're doing endurance type things like running or other cardio you should probably eat some carbs on those days. For strength training days you can lean out really quickly on a fat and protein only diet.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

    Armageddon is good!?
Brad, I usually think this but dont write it out... this time I have to...you're wrong! :)

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

To not be entertained by Armageddon is to have lost a small piece of your soul. I will do my best to help you find it. :)

      • http://filmemignon.blogspot.com/ Corbin

I saw it the other day. I thought it was good, but when Steve Buscemi got space mad and started firing the machine gun I laughed my ass off.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Elijah/ Elijah

Oi I watched pieces of it last year and it's pretty bad. I certainly enjoyed it when I was 9 and I'll give it points for Michael Clarke Duncan, otherwise it's doomed to get progressively worse forever.

  • Justin Golding

Even though I don't always agree with you guys, I want to say I love the podcast and thank you for the free entertainment.

With such shocking allegations about people like Bryan Singer and Woody Allen, do
you think that Hollywood will start to be more watchful of celebrities' misconduct? When you get a bunch of people with money and power and put them in a culture where they can do no wrong, are these stories just inevitable? What obligation if any do we as consumers and fans have to hold these people accountable? Ought film studios continue to hire accused child molesters or is it just another case of separating the art from the artist? [Sorkinfan]

Listener Question: In general I am also disheartened by the reboot/sequels nature of Hollywood. But one reason I do find interesting to do a reboot is if there is a movie with a great premise/idea but turned out bad due to bad special effects, script, director or some combination. However, Hollywood insists on only rebooting movies that are already good. Do you guys agree with this and if so what terrible movies with great premises would you like to be redone? [Mr_Mercury]
