Look Now: 'Oz the Great and Powerful' Poster Debuts

COMMENTS

A July 4 debut for the new poster

Disney has chosen the July 4 holiday to premiere the first poster for Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful, which is sure to have a presence at the San Diego Comic Con later this month and will hit theaters on March 8, 2013.

The film stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff and centers on small-time magician Oscar Diggs (Franco) who pulls one flimflam too many and he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard—and just maybe into a better man as well.

I have included the poster directly below along with the full synopsis for the film. You can get a larger look at the poster here.

Disney's fantastical adventure Oz The Great and Powerful, directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot--fame and fortune are his for the taking--that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity--and even a bit of wizardry--Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

  1. So this will be a prelude to the book or the movie? In the movie, Dorothy is dreaming. In the book, she isn't, she actually went on an adventure in a magical land.

This makes it seems like a connection to the novel (no way the wizard could fly inside a girls dream, right?). It's going to be weird, though, because 'The Wizard of Oz' is such a seminal movie that it's going to be IMPOSSIBLE for Raimi to escape from its visual cues and references.

Really looking forward to this one hoping that the March release date isn't a hit at its quality.

Love the poster, it really does open the imagination of what can be done with Oz. But I'm concerned this is going to end up like Burton's Alice.

  4. Carlos says:

    Lord of the OZ?

Wasn't all this meant to be in Dorothy's head when she's concussed? Making an origin's story just means the wanna make money from a beloved brand.

Love the poster, very beautiful. And I agree with the above poster, its poster ART not a Photoshop abomination.

Movie sounds intriguing, but I will hold judgement until I see it though I am not too sure about this cast.
