Will Blu-ray or HD DVD win this war?

Is there a resolution to this apparent high-definition war or will people have to buy both kinds of players, or own a PS3 and an XBOX 360 HD DVD add-on? However it all pans out, I am currently a supporter of HD DVD because I have an HD DVD player, but I wouldn't mind one of those PS3s.

Until then we have quite a few HD DVDs to look forward to and The Man Room went ahead and broke it all down for me, which was nice now that I don't have to. Here is their list of all the HD DVDs set for release through June. I added a few titles and not all of the titles The Man Room had are in the database since they don't have official release dates yet, but anything in the database has been linked.

Remember, you can always check out all the latest on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray disc in RopeofSilicon's Home Video Central and on our release calendar.

Enjoy!

  1. Oh ya… bring it. Things are looking good for the supposedly "dead format". I hope even more are announced and the secret studios that the HD DVD group can’t say anything about are announced soon.

  2. I am NOT getting caught in a VHS/Betamax war. As much as I'd love to jump into hi-def DVD, I'm waiting until the dust settles, even if it takes a year or two.

  3. This Hi-Def war is nothing like Betamax / VHS even though it's being billed as so. Likely both formats will fail long before there is a clear winner. Something else will emerge before we can crown someone. Plus, VHS / Betamax took 10 years before VHS was declared a winner and Betamax is still in operation at a lot of TV studios so who won really?

As a reviewer for the site I run I had to no choice but to jump into both formats, but my preference lies with HD DVD and not the competition for the simple reason… I'm tired of the Blu-waitforit-ray technology to do what it says it can do. HD DVD is able to do everything it set out to do very early on and doesn't require special hardware for items like the In Movie Experience where Blu-ray players will require a second hardware video source to play the pip features.

It's just exciting because HD DVD has had a drought as far as releases over the last 4 weeks.
