Oscar Contender Assets: 'Brothers' and 'An Education' Posters and Clip
Get a taste of what everyone's talking about
I only have one more piece of coding detail left to do and the RopeofSilicon 2010 "The Contenders" section will open up and two of the titles featured in that section have just enjoyed a couple of online updates.
First off we have the poster for An Education as well as a clip featuring the much talked about performance of Carey Mulligan as Jenny, a teenage girl living in Britain in the early 1960s on the cusp of the strait-laced, post-war period and the free-spirited decade to come. Along with Mulligan the film stars Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike.
Based on buzz it would seem Mulligan is a definite contender for a Best Actress nomination and others whom have seen the film are applauding the work of Molina and most recently In Contention mentioned Pike's performance. One thing is for certain, it's nice to see Rosamund Pike in real movies where she belongs and hopefully to never be seen again in something as bad as Doom and I felt even Fracture was a step down even though she was surrounded by talent in that film.
So, you've probably already seen the clip montage just above and if not, give it a watch. It doesn't spoil the film and actually just gives you enough of a taste to know what the film is about and why people are talking about Mulligan. And next we have the poster, which debuted at Movie City News.
An Education is set for an October 9 release from Sony Classics.
Next is the poster for Brothers, which is directed by Jim Sheridan and stars Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. Brothers has taken a while to get to the big screen but is finally set for a release on December 4 from Lionsgate. Just below is the poster followed by the film's trailer.

I'm really not sure of what to make of "Brothers" it has all the makings of a sappy romantic drama and then all of a sudden it becomes a little…off. I'm actually more interested in it knowing it's not a "road back to normality" story, but it seems like it could be a little over the top. My position on Natalie Portman movies is I'll always watch them once (because I love her) so I guess I'll be seeing it.
Also, Tobey should keep his "Tropic Thunder" tag and star in every movie as "MTV Best Kiss Winner Tobey Maguire.
One last postscript, can we as a population be done with The Fray soon?
What I never understand is how anyone would want to hang out with a school girl. Seduce, yes. Bring to an adult dinner as one's date? And no one blinks. Of course, the girl thinks it's great…mature and sophisticated. But the adults? This doesn't seem interesting to me. It's an old story, retold.
@Patricia: The story is actually not what you'd expect. I've read the essay that it's based on and it's completely captivating and charming. Give it a read if you have a chance. :)

@Rae Kasey: We're going to have to agree to disagree. This is the oldest story ever told, just retold. "I met Simon Goldman in 1960 when I was 16 and he was – he said – 27, but was probably in his late 30s. I was waiting for a bus home to Twickenham after a rehearsal at Richmond Little Theatre, when a sleek maroon car drew up and a man with a big cigar in his mouth leant over to the passenger window and said, 'Want a lift?'"
When a young beautiful girl meets an older man, she is usually protected by thinking him old and a bit creepy. But if he is handsome with a nice car and is clever enough to endulge her thirst to think herself sophisticated her only hope is a protective family. Lacking that, this is what generally happens. This is neither captivating nor charming to me.
@Patricia: It's probably captivating and charming for the girl.
Tobey McGuire scared the crap out of me at the end of that trailer. Also, does anyone else actually see a resemblence between McGuire and Gyllenhaal?
the brothers is a story done over so many times… even in bollywood ( yeah thats where i am from ) … plus tobey and jake dont interest me as actors… and the whole PTSD thing was overdone in the trailer… wonder if the movie will be worse than the trailer or no… sorry for natalie portman she is fantastic… thought not quite the movie for her..
as for the education i loved the last scene betweek carey mulligan and emma thompson… now this is a movie brimming over with talented actors… the story might not meet patricia's approval but might translate beautilfully on screen…
I agree with Viral – I'm officially excited about An Education.
@Viral:
this is not bollywood, the subject might be the same, but here the same movies are dealt with a different approach, if you dont like tobey and jake, thats your opinion, it doesnt say anything about the movie. the same actors have starred in some critically acclaimed movies in the past.
@ddurden33: i know this is not bollywood and i am no flagbearer for it either… am just saying that the story has been done to death… they might have starred in critically acclaimed movies but that does not make them any better actors.. and i bet the next news for the movie is gonna be how tobey lost a lot of weight to get "into the character" … i just dont like the trailer and possibly wont like the movie either…
@Viral:
they might have starred in critically acclaimed movies but that does not make them any better actors, ????? what are you smoking ??? just because you dont like a particular actor or actress, doesnt mean they are bad, your opinions are subjective to you, not the rest of us.
I'm not excited about Brothers because…. I love Jim Sheridan's writing, but just as a matter of personal taste, I am not crazy about his directing. And he's not writing 'Brothers'….. the writer from X-men Wolverine is writing it, along with the director of 'Things We Lost in The Fire'…. ouch.
And yell at me for bad taste all you want, mr. durden33, but Tobey and Jake do not interest me, either.
@Patricia: I agree with you to an extent. I do think we've seen the basic plot plenty of times before. But her persepctive is a fresh one. She talks about not really being interested in him at all, just using him for the nice restaurants and the trips. So the exploitation was at least mutual. And the setting is a nice element too. She comes of age as England does, just before the revolution that was the Beatles and the "swingin' sixties".
@Viral:
How has that story been done to death, I can't recall a movie where a brother is suspected to be dead and his other brother starts to take care of the familly and then everyone is shocked when the "dead" brother turns out to still be alive and comes back all psycho?
I dunno, did I somehow miss the earlier movies with that storyline? lol
@Roger: Pearl Harbor… kinda :)
@Roger: Pearl Harbour, and at least than they had the occasional explosion.
Anyway, the whole plot line of conflicted lovers has been done to death. You can wrap it up in other stuff but you're still looking at a conflicted lover story.
@ddureden33: When has Tobey Maguire been in anything critically acclaimed? I don't count Spiderman or Sea Biscuit as that wasn't so much acting as being quite arrogant. Hell, he hasn't done anything since Spiderman 3 and seems to be channeling pervert parker from SM3 into his performance somewhat.
Also Bollywood do things just as well as Hollywood, often better.
@EnglishGavz: "When has Tobey Maguire been in anything critically acclaimed?" The Cider House Rules. Not everyone liked it, but 7 Academy Award nominations is nothing to sneeze at.
@Rae Kasey: Don't forget Seabiscuit, Pleasantville, Spider-man 2, Wonderboys, and The Ice Storm.
To me, the trailer gave away a little too much, which we have all seen. I wasn't intrigued at the beginning of the trailer, felt done before. Then the brother comes back, now I'm intrigued. Where are they going to take this? Then, I find out where they are going to take it, and now, I'm no longer intrigued. Too bad, if I didn't see the Tobey freaking out with the cops, I would've been interested.
Tobey and Jake are fine actors. Yes, on The Cider House Rules, but double yes on Wonder Boys, possibly my favorite Tobey Maguire performance. And I thought Jake was awesome in Brokeback and Jarhead. But this movie seems to go obvious, I hope there is something more than what the trailer showed.
I am highly interested in An Education, but that may be because I have yet to see a trailer for the film.
to each his own,,,,,,how is tobey not a critically acclaimed actor ?? he played parker convincingly, and got recognition for his work, from critics and fans alike, it takes a certain skill to achieve success at something, yes it was a comicbook movie, but a movie afterall, with some great performances, it opened the door, to all the superhero crap that unloads on the big screen these days. and to much disbelief critics do review comic book movies, and they liked his portrayal of peter parker.
An Education theatrical trailer in HD:
480p
720p
1080p
@Eric: Yes, most of those were already mentioned. Glad you brought up The Ice Storm, though. I've always thought it was tragically overlooked.
Also, the trailer for An Education is up, and I think it's stunning.

@Sound Designer Dan: Oops! You beat me! :)
@GregM: @EnglishGavz:
Thanks. Yeah I thought of Pearl Harbour but I still wouldn't consider it to be "done to death" just cuz of that one.
I mean if we're gonna generalize that a story with clonflicted lovers is done to death, almost every movie has some sort of sub-story with conflicted lovers lol
@EnglishGavz:
Are you serious? I guess "Wonder Boys" "The Cider House Rules" "Pleasentville" "The Ice Storm" isnt ringing any bells huh?
No should they?
