'Only God Forgives' Red Band Trailer

I can't wait to see this movie

You all know how much I'm looking forward to Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, re-teaming him with his Drive star Ryan Gosling and co-starring Kristen Scott-Thomas and how much I'm hoping it makes it into the 2013 Cannes Film Festival line-up as did Drive a couple years back. Well, a red band trailer has made its way online and I am doing everything I can to avoid watching it.

The film finds Gosling playing Julian, a former kickboxer and gangster living in Bangkok. When his brother is murdered by a ruthless Thai police lieutenant, Julian is forced to seek vengeance or risk his own death. Scott-Thomas plays the mother doing the forcing.

Weinstein banner Radius-TWC will release the film domestically and it's actually expected to hit French theaters in May around the same time as the festival, which tells me it's more likely to be an Out of Competition title, but you better believe that will be one hot ticket.

Check out the Only God Forgives trailer below and let me know what you think. The film will hit theaters on July 19.

    Visually, looks rather Kubrickian

      Music to my ears.

That makes sense, I saw on another site that it was shot by the lighting cameraman on Eyes Wide Shut.

Kristin Scott Thomas looks SO different! She looks so trashy instead of her classy self.

  • http://cineenuruguay.blogspot.com/ Driver

Holy shit, this looks perfect. It reminds of Drive but looks completely different, and more beautiful, if that's possible.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/HarryFuertes/ Harry Fuertes

Visually it's perfect. I have high hopes for this movie.

This looks incredible. If Refn is going to top Drive, this looks like the film to do it. I can't wait to see it.

Incredibly enticing. It was No.4 on my most anticipated list, and after looking at the trailer, I want it to put it Top 3.

While Ryan Gosling seems like playing an extension of his Drive's character, it's Kristen Scott Thomas who looks real deal to me. She is going to garner the same amount praise what Brooks got for Drive. Though Brooks didn't land an Oscar nomination even after coming so close, Scott seems like will make it in Top 5.

Must... not... watch. Contain yourself. Wait for it to be released. Patience.

I am holding myself back from watching this trailer. Thanks for the warning Raging Taxi Driver. It's going to be hard to avoid this though. I imagine it might be shown as a trailer at Place Beyond the Pines. Maybe I'll slip out for popcorn right about then.

There's no chance on earth I'm watching this, but I love that people are loving it. Cannot fucking wait. I haven't handed out a 4.5/5 since Inception and I'm hoping this is the one.

The great thing about this trailer is that it is not trailer more like a musical montage with only one line of dialogue in the entire trailer... It in no ways spoils anything like a lot of trailers do...

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

Yeah AS, this is one of those must-watch trailers in my opinion. It's really well done.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Corbin/ Corbin

I agree... you won't regret watching this one.

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/AS/ AS

Still, I'd rather experience the imagery for the first time in the theater. I don't want to have any of the cool shots spoiled before hand.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Corbin/ Corbin

    Very visually intriguing. Perfect even.

I predict an A+ from Brad.

I loved the way Drive looked and shot, but found the narrative really underwhelming. Hopefully this doesn't have the same problem for me.

When I saw the article I think if Drive is one of my favorite films of all times, I'll also like this, but after I watched the trailer all I can say is I f***ing Ioved it! Can't wait to see the 2nd colaboration of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling!

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/PocketsOtool/ PocketsOtool

    Winding Refn/Gosling = Scorsese/DeNiro

looks amazing, is the domestic release date probably going to be this summer or next fall?

MTV says July 19th but idk where the date is coming from...

The trailer didn't show much it was interesting.

  • http://coachpotatodigest.blogspot.com Matt

This looks pretty fantastic. The visuals are astounding, and I'm already loving Kristin Scott Thomas. Can't wait to check it out!

From the people who made drive, why watch the trailer when you know its going to be great

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Jake17/ Jake17

Must... resist... temptation... to watch... the trailer.... ARGHHH!

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

This is why I still believe watching a trailer, at least one, can be a great experience...looks fantastic!

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Tom/ Tom

    Wowzers.

  • http://www.iamramiam.blogspot.com Movieram

I'm keeping an open mind, but I think the trailer looks a little pretentious.

Kristin Scott Thomas, though. Wow. I'm there!

As much as I want to watch this, I simply can't. Very excited for this one.

  • ishar kar

Looks stunning visually and I think it will be much more than the action movie that is portrayed in the trailer, just like people thought that Drive would be something like Fast and the Furious.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/andyluvsfilms/ andyluvsfilms

love this trailer, the visuals and music are spot on, this is my most anticipated film of the year(this week), also i think Gosling has his own charisma and style unlike any other working actor, you just never see him acting

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Adu/ Adu

Re-watching the trailer, I can't help but think how close Gosling's character seems to resemble Driver...his demeanor and dialogue delivery is almost exact. So it got me wondering...what if this is a prequel to Drive that just has not been revealed yet?

  • http://www.myfilmreview.nl/home/ Reindeer

Brad, I guess this "cry for help" is lowering your expectations, right? ;-)

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Jake17/ Jake17

Hahaha, I was wondering the same thing.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/ Brad Brevet

I would certainly say I don't expect this film to do big money at the box-office and by releasing a red band trailer it's in hopes of attracting an audience based on the R-rated nature rather than the filmmaking and/or story, which most people who appreciate Drive and Bronson will be looking forward to while others will be looking for something akin to a Paul W.S. Anderson movie.

      • http://www.myfilmreview.nl/home/ Reindeer

I may agree with you on the Rogen-film, but here I think it could very well be possible that Nicolas Winding Refn (or agreeing producers) wanted to really show the feel/atmosphere/etc. from the film. I didn't watch the trailer either, so I could be very wrong. But I do think a red band trailer serves his material in the right way.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/TheMovieGuru/ The Movie Guru

Honestly, if I didn't know any better, I wouldn't have guessed that this was a red band trailer. There just wasn't anything that was super graphic in it.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Cordia/ Cordia

Great Trailer, it shows just the vibe the movie will have, but nothing about the story. if you would watch the trailer alone, you would know less about it than someone who read the synopsis, which is good. The trailer looks like drive, in terms of lighting and tone but also looks very differtent, my number one most anticipated since the beginning of last year so i'm really happy when it is July 4 and i can watch in in theaters.

For people wondering what the song was that was playing, it was "Tur Kue Kwam Fun (Music Box)" by the Thai band Proud I spent the better part of an hour looking for it.

Also, this film has bumped up to my #1 most anticipated 2013 film after this trailer.

So excited for this one! I remember seeing Drive and after thinking it was one of my best cinematic experiences. This is definitely on my top 3 for the year.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/nacho/ nacho

I wasn't a huge fan of Drive, but this is certainly one of my most anticipated films of the year, and one of the main reasons is Kristin Scott Thomas in what's looking like one of her best performances.
