Online World Weighs In On the Leona Lewis 'Avatar' Theme Song
It's not exactly a lovefest, but then again it's also not Emo
Peter Sciretta at Slash Film kick starts the online love for Leona Lewis's Avatar theme song "I See You" declaring the song "laughably bad" and his commenters follow suit:
matthewwells says, "hahahaha this sounds like its from a Christian movie its so bad."
Kyle C. says, "I think James Cameron is still stuck in the 90's when shit like this was "cool" or at least acceptable. I'm gonna feel embarrassed just hearing this shitty song when the credits start to roll."
Brian says, "Glad it's at the credits, AFTER the film so I can jet out of the theater quick. Absolutely can't stand the way this woman butchers music."
Over at In Contention Guy Lodge says it's "godawful (or 'hilarious,' take your pick)."
Lane Brown at Vulture calls it the "hilarious Avatar theme song, made in the mold of 'My Heart Will Go On' and fortified with a full range of late-nineties radio-schmaltz pyrotechnics."
Graeme McMillan at i09 says "it's an inoffensive if unexciting piece of balladry fluff."
Decide for yourself. Avatar hits theaters on December 18.

I heard this song last week – and thought it was ZZzzzzzzzz…..pretty dull if you ask me.
You know what, considering the fact that most of the people going gaga for this film are more of the sci-fi (nerd) variety, I would bet that most of these people hated "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion which played over the credits at the end of Titanic.
I've heard the song. While it is by no means a great song, it seems to fit. After all Avatar does include a heavily romantic subplot, the same as the 1997 juggernaut which launched the careers of Leo and Kate.
ok it's not the greatest song (a highly objective comment to be sure)…but…WHO CARES???? No one gives a crap what internet critics think anyway. LOL!!! Internet critics.
I get happier and happier each time the laughably stupid population of the world complain about stuff like this. Where do people get the audacity to throw the most ridiculously unfair comments about probably the greatest singer in the world today and by far the most level headed. I think the idiots who are complaining about singers who they couldn't even remotely match in any way shape or form should take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror and ask how they sleep at night.
It's bullying; the fact that likely sad old men are butchering a 24 year old woman with incredible talents is the most pathetically laughable thing I have ever heard.. Grow up.
I honestly can't believe the crap i'm reading here! Leona Lewis is an amazing singer and this song is actually even better than my heart will go on! its not as cheesey and leona sounds fantastic as usual! She is also one of the nicest ppl around and to read these ridculous posts on here makes me actually feel sick to the stomack! Grow up and short your lives out whoever the hell yous are!
I think we can cross this one off the Best Orignal Song list. This deserves a Razzie, not an Oscar. It's the EXACT same song as the one from Titianic.
Chick song. Don't blame Cameron; Horner loves this sort of thing. I betch'a it's a chick movie, though. How else do you get your money back other than getting every chick in the world to wanna see it.
Not a bad song. Not the kind of genre I listen to, but it is fine to play over the credits. Leona Lewis has a great voice.
It's a good thing I don't care, because otherwise I'd be pissed
"I think James Cameron is still stuck in the 90's"
That would trouble me if it weren't for one thing, the 90's rocked. I very much like this track, it's typical cheesy stuff. It reminds me of Titanic.
Not my kind of music, but it's not really bad. It's just… Normal. And a little boring.
I don't know why the hate. It's similar to My Hear Will Go On? Not really. I think they have very little in common, melody wise. I don't understand the comparisons.
I think that's gonna hurt Avatar a little. Comparisons with Titanic.
Jesus, Cameron waited 12 f***ing years, but people still need to relate his new movie with his last one? I wonder if people will also compare The Lovely Bones with King Kong… =/
This music is really great, how can you say it's "crap" ??
I wish I could say something different, but I have to agree with the majority. Nothing special here.
Its ok for me. I think it is very "Avatar" to say it in some way. Not great, but its a good song.
Well… opinion are like axxholes, everybody has one. Honestly if I have to choose between the taste of one of the best director of all times and these unhappy people who write this laughable 'reviews' even before watching the final product… you know the answer… good luck with your life.
it may just be me but its beatufil and her vocals make it this could be a hit, all depends on if it works wit the film
I think Leona Lewis has a beautiful voice, not my type of music but that doesn't make it a bad song. If you listen to the lyrics it sounds like it fits what happens in the movie, or at least what I get from the commercials. I mean there's this human who is controlling an Avatar, then he meets with the Naa'vi woman and she teaches him what it's like to be one of them or something along those lines. So basically he is "seeing through their eyes", does that make the song cheesy yes but a lot of the times movie theme songs that have lyrics are.
I love the song.. it just proves us one more time that after all, this is a love story not an action movie. A love story submerged in an action environment
I have to admit to not being a "fan" of Leona Lewis. I think she is talented but all of her songs sound the same. I liked "Bleeding Love." This new one isn't bad at all; hearing decent music in a movie usually is quite difficult to achieve because they usually use garbage music (as in a song not a soundtrack recording) in every movie.
That said I would hope this movie isn't a "love story"; it better be an action movie or no one will see it. James Cameron's "name" always helps though.
Boring song.
Funny how only negative views are included here.
Btw it's also funny how the people were generally 90% positive abaout the song until some geek sites that still think that Avatar will be more like Terminator or Aliens than Titanic started to stink their opinions.
Accept this! Avatar will be Titanic-like in story etc. If you don't like that, do not post shit in your sites and do not go and watch the movie.
As about this song not being a hit song. Well it doesn't need to be a hit song, it's only in the credits of Avatar… Do you know what is the song in the credits for 2012? Is that a hit? IS IT?
As per usual with any open discussion on the internet, you have the types of reply's that look for the response of starting an argument over what is good and what is bad, what's in or out, or is this in style or not. It's an individuals choice regardless if it's negative or positive. If you like the song and the movie "GREAT" if not "GREAT" move on. One thing that is for certain is that the internet is really good at serving up an overwhelming lack of intelligence and ignorance.
Finally I don't mind the song, I think Leona Lewis is exceptionally talented singer and Avatar looks amazing.
Just to clarify for some commenters: I was criticising the song itself, not Leona Lewis (who I think is a pretty incredible vocalist). She gives it all she's got, but Horner's to blame for the complete absence of melody.
@ALONSO20: If I had seen any positive ones they would have been included as well.
This isn't a theme song, this is mood music: it's the type of music you expect to hear in the background of an semi-clamatic scene with lots of stars and jungle scapes. In that respect it's well done.
But is it a good song in general? No. I don't know what these people were thinking when they gave this the go ahead as the theme song to an ACTION MOVIE. Honestly. It kinda makes me want to sleep or something. Bad choice, brother.
