One Woman is Still Questioning Why 'Jennifer's Body' Failed
Would feminists be able to drive a film to box-office success?
I can understand exactly where i09's Annalee Newitz is coming from when she writes "Did Stupid Marketing Kill Jennifer's Body?" even if I think she is beating a dead horse. We all have movies we either like or love that we wish more people would have seen and supported. The thought behind this is that if they prove to be successful hopefully the studios will begin making more just like them. Instead, people flock to endless sequels to Saw and superhero movies.
Annalee's argument relating to Jennifer's Body revolves around the idea Fox simply marketed the movie to the wrong demo — boys. Instead, what they should have done was recognize the film's strong female driven premise and market it toward the gender that makes up over 60% of horror movie audiences — women.
I didn't connect to the film in any way, but apparently that has to do with the fact I am a male, as pointed out by Scarlet Scribe at I Went There saying:
And why don't [males] understand the film? Because it's one of the very few honest-to-goodness feminist films out there – and more so then being feminist, it's one of the few films that views things from a female lens. Boys are there, and make up the majority of the victims in this body horror film, but they're not a concern. For once we have a story with female main characters who aren't obsessing about, fighting over, or bitching about boys every five minutes. Jennifer's Body is about women and how they relate to each other, the horror moments are there for style and allegory, but at its heart the movie is about two girls whose own toxic friendship is eating them both alive.
Okay, that sounds reasonable, I don't mind not being the target audience, nor do I mind not understanding a film, especially if it doesn't speak to me. However, I think Annalee's argument that the film failed because the marketing didn't manage to speak to this feminist audience is a bit of a stretch. After all, if 60% of a horror film's audience is made up of women wouldn't you be more inclined to try and appeal to the male base, which based on statistics needs to be enticed?
Annalee writes:
I think it's clear that misguided marketing was a huge factor in what destroyed Jennifer's Body. As I said, the movie isn't Criterion Collection material, but it's a damn good genre picture. It's better than most other horror movies out there, with an original premise and a smart, fresh take on a very old monster story. If the marketing droids at Fox had just been smart enough to realize that the movie was aimed at women – not unlike most horror movies – they might have had a cult hit on their hands.
What she doesn't seem to understand is that Fox does have "a cult hit on their hands." A cult film is a movie with a highly devoted, yet very specific, group of fans and is typically a film that acquires this audience over a period of time and certainly not at the box-office.
Donnie Darko made $517,375 at the box-office; The Big Lebowski managed $17 million; Office Space made $10 million; Clerks made $3 million; The Shawshank Redemption (IMDb's #1 user rated movie) only made $28 million. The $14 million Jennifer's Body has managed smells like a huge cult classic should the female drum beat loud enough. Perhaps females around the world will be snatching up this DVD and rest it right in-between their copies of Clueless and Terminator.
Annalee brings up a quote from director Karyn Kusama who told MTV, "I don't know if selling the film as a straight horror film and selling it primarily to boys is really going to do any of us any favors, frankly." Of course, this was a tactic used based on the assumed perception that males will line-up to see Megan Fox. The trailers showed her strutting her stuff and with an R-rating and the suggestive marketing just maybe, maybe she'll get naked.
Hell, during her PR tour Fox turned up at the "Tonight Show" with Conan O'Brien and the one clip they showed was the girl-on-girl smooch scene, a scene that played a major role in the marketing. I would argue against Annalee simply saying Fox didn't miss the boat by marketing the film to boys, they missed the boat by marketing the film as a soft core horror porn.
Megan Fox just isn't the male draw marketers believe her to be. Even more, I think she is one of the main reasons females would stay away from this film. There isn't a female in my life that has ever spoken of Fox in a positive light in my presence and while watching her with Conan, my sister texted me to say, "Megan Fox is the stupidest person I have ever listened to." It was the first time she had ever heard her speak.
She doesn't appeal to an R-rated 17-and-older male audience because they have their "MEGAN FOX NAKED TOPLESS LESBIAN" Google searches to satisfy their needs and women are tired of reading quotes from her such as her latest Rolling Stone revelation in which she says, "Men are scared of powerful, confident vaginas. But I wasn't born with a special vagina." Megan Fox with short shorts and collagen filled lips merely serves as the cherry on top of a Transformers sundae; young boys delivering flowers are sure to swoon, but the rest of the demo is pretty much over it.
So, if 20th Century Fox tried marketing Jennifer's Body to a core female audience, focusing on the story of a "popular, pretty girl who pretends to be your friend while secretly trying to steal your boyfriend, your pride, and your life" and featuring the shapely Megan Fox just who exactly is going to be turning out to see it, ushering in gang-buster box-office returns? I would say if they had marketed it that way the film would have been an even bigger bust as the core male audience would have been even less interested than they already seemed to have been, the Fox hating females wouldn't have gone any way and the feminist crowd would have probably still been wary.

The final line of this essay is exactly how I felt after taking a look at Ms. Newitz's article. It wouldn't have mattered anyway because this just wasn't a marketable, accessible title.
I know I've been saying this over and over again, but "Jennifer's Body" was never going to be a successful title in the state that it's in right now. It wasn't going to happen. Megan Fox is such a strong personality that she almost repels moviegoers than she attracts them. She's not so much a talented actress as she is tabloid fodder. People are kinda getting sick of her, so focusing a movie marketing campaign on solely her being vampish is about as attractive to moviegoers as making and trying to sell "Jon & Kate's Divorce: The Movie".
Don't know why we're still talking about this movie though. It bombed but I guarantee that it'll be a "cult classic" sooner rather than later. I'm sure some two years from now Hot Topic will be bombarded with t-shirts and "Where's it At, Monistat" bumper stickers, right next to an Edward Cullen cut-out.
I think you nailed it, it's not that the film was marketed poorly (and its only real crime in that regard was over saturation), it's more that the core audience of women (which, let's face it, became core from movies marketed in much the same way) really dislike Megan Fox, like no star since Gwyneth Paltrow.
It remains to be seen whether this becomes a cult hit or disappears into the murk along with Sorority Row (did that fail for the same reason?), but what is clear is that, Zombieland and Paranormal Experience notwithstanding, there is simply better genre fare to be seen direct to DVD (Grace is a far more interesting female-centered piece that J's B).
I'm one of the people who used to like her… but got sick of her stupid mouth and ignorant comments. Shove her down our throats, and we'll barf her back up. It bombed because she is a brainless airhead, wannabe Angelina, and we know there's only 1 of those. Try being real Meggy and apologize for the stupid, insulting remarks you've made, get some acting lessons, and quit worrying if your lips have enough collagen in them. Then again, some people have talent… and some don't.
Hm¸ I don't agree with this article at all. I'm female¸ 20 years old¸ straight¸ have a boyfriend & am in love with Megan Fox. She's my hero. & this movie is pretty much one of my favorites ever. The story line was amazing & I found myself relating to the movie quite a bit. I'm not ashamed to say I've seen the movie 10 times in the theatures¸ 3 times with my boyfriend¸ & my apartment has many Megan Fox posters & photos on my walls. To say this movie "failed' is untrue. It was #5 at the box office at one point.
I dunno. You're scenario of "a "popular, pretty girl who pretends to be your friend while secretly trying to steal your boyfriend, your pride, and your life" and featuring the shapely Megan Fox" could work.
If the marketing had focused on the fact that you were supposed to hate Megan Fox, instead of being afraid of her, it probably would've done better…
@Kayla Belcher: He said it failed because it didn't make a profit or even it's money back yet so it did fail and being number 5 on the box office isn't anything to be too proud of. I'm not sure if it will be a cult movie to be honest. Fox is killing herself slowly everytime she talks it seems.
Not only is megan fox rude and annoying.. Girls hate her because their boyfriends like her.. I know a lot of my girl friends refused to watch that movie because their boyfriends thinks she's "hot." They hate her for shoving herself in everybody's face.
I agree with the poster that said if they focused the advertising on "hating megan fox's" character in the movie. Im sure maybe some of my girl friends would've seen it to join in on "hating her."
I never even bothered to see the dumb movie.
I'd say the film bombed because of Megan Fox.
She's… Boring. For both females and males over 14.
Sure, she's hot, but I can't read or hear anything she says because it's always uber-bullshit!!
I don't think people care about her anymore and any movie she does hence forth will bomb – unless it's a Transformers sequel or a movie with an ACTUAL bankable star.
And I agree with you when I say the movie would bomb even more had the marketing targeted it towards the female audience. Because women HATE Megan Fox. I have a lot of girl friends and all of them simply can't stand her… Even a lesbian friend of mine hates her. She's boring!
Hot as hell.
But boring as a church.
For the record, I am a 25 year old female and I love Megan Fox and I really enjoyed the movie. I do not think she's boring, I find her fascinating. I love the way her mind works and the things that come out of her mouth. I have never givin much thought to the marketing of Jennifers Body but I can see your point. I bought 2 of shirts from Hot Topic before I even saw the movie which I was there for on opening night. My only dissappointment in the film was that there were two scenes in the trailer that wasn't in the movie. I guess thats for the DVD special, which i will be sure to buy first day it is released.
@Kayla Belcher: Your awesome! I am a 25 yr old straight female and in love with Megan Fox. I have a poster of her in my closet which I keep in there because my roommate wouldnt want it on a wall anywhere else in the house and because I dont have anymore wall space in my bedroom. Plus I like the whole " I have Megan Fox in my closet" idea, lol. Im older than her but I really admire and look up to her. She knows who she is and speaks her mind. In my experience men don't like strong willed women who can think for themselves and be their own person and women who arent that way find it intimidating. I'm a pyschology major, thats just my view on it.
Looks like fangirls strike back.
Everything she says is thought up by her PR team. I don't look up to someone who claims it's ok to do drugs and thus, teaching kids to get high or drunk. Like she said in some interview on youtube, "Do kids read british GQ"? Well, the point is…. everything this idiot says spreads all over the internet! It's NOT ok to teach kids to do drugs, have sex, and hate God. I have NO RESPECT for this piece of trash.
Megan Fox is the bitch inside every woman some women don't like that fact but it's true so you can either accept it and embrace it or hate it and just not be her best friend?
This movie wasn't one of her best but seeing as she can't seem to get any decent roles after the transformers fiasco I'm not expecting a classic from her!
Until everyone can say whatever they like without being judged there will always be people like this that no-one knows what to do with! She does make people cringe but so do Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan & Madonna that's Hollywood!
