It's all a bit surreal

"I can't stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless."

~ Madonna

I had no intention of writing anything extra about Michael Jackson, but as yesterday wore on I began to realize how absolutely insane it was to think I ran a headline that was read by thousands of people and may have actually been the first place some people heard the news an entertainment icon the size of Michael Jackson had passed away. I grew up listening to this guy and buying his music the day it was released and now I may have actually been the first to tell someone he was dead. It's a bit hard for me to believe and extraordinarily surreal.

After posting yesterday's headline a few people visited and read the short article, but suddenly the site was getting hammered and eventually crashed for about 30 minutes. While the site was down I went out to grab my mail at the UPS Store down the street and pick up a few groceries. I didn't even mention Jackson's passing to the UPS employees I see every single day. I wasn't in a daze or anything; I don't really get that way about these things. I was just blissfully unaware of the magnitude of the situation.

I know some people will say his death means nothing and there are more important things in this world. Entirely fair and entirely true, but nonetheless irrelevant. People will also say he was just an entertainer, and one that fell under the scrutiny of the law for allegedly molesting children on top of several crazy rumors. That's fine, that's how you remember him, and who can't think of those things when Michael Jackson's name is mentioned? However, beyond all that there is his music, something that actually brings up different memories, none of which having to do with the negatives as much as they remind us of moments in our own lives.

For me, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was the first tape I ever owned and it wasn't even the official version, it was a recorded copy on a black audio tape with a white and orange sticker. I remember the day my father's cassette deck in his truck ate the tape destroying any opportunity to listen to it again (not for a lack of trying). I was about six-years-old and it was not a happy day. My family at that time didn't have a lot of money and it would be years before I got an official replacement. As it turned out I wouldn't actually own "Thriller" again until about 12 years later when I got it as part of a Columbia House membership and by that time I was basically filling in the blanks in my collection.

I remember when "Bad" came out with Wesley Snipes in the Martin Scorsese directed music video for the title song, which I would only see once until much later when it came out as part of a video collection you could buy. I remember "Smooth Criminal" and the video that accompanied it not to mention "Moonwalker," which I watched who knows how many times on MTV.

Then there was the video for "Black and White," and the quizzical looks I shared with the rest of my family after witnessing more crotch grabbing than any one person should see at one time. Eddie Murphy then played a pharaoh with Iman in the "Remember the Time" music video that also included Magic Johnson of all people. I also remember being the only one at Tower Records the morning "HIStory" was released and then walking through Target to snatch up my copy of "Invincible."

Then there's Bubbles, the first Moonwalk, the red jacket, his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley and their kiss at the MTV VMAs, his hair starting on fire in making that Pepsi commercial, oxygen chambers, dating Brooke Shields, Macaulay Culkin, those giant HIStory statues, the ABC interview, "Scream" with Janet, his skin color, plastic surgery, the six times I saw "Captain EO" at Disneyland in the span of two days and so many other topics of conversation. And this is just off the top of my head. His life is unexplainable and to understand him is unfathomable and now impossible.

The death of Michael Jackson may not be a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it does cause me to take a moment of reflection.

Of course, what I will remember most is his music and it is the one thing he left behind that we can all enjoy without prejudice. Of his classic songs "Billie Jean" and "Man in the Mirror" are likely my favorites, but my list doesn't necessarily start with the all-time classics as much as it centers on songs such as three mid-range classics "P.Y.T.," "Dirty Diana" and "Human Nature" (perhaps the best of them all) followed by "Another Part of Me," "Leave Me Alone" (love the Liz Taylor influence), "Why You Wanna Trip On Me," "Tabloid Junkie," "2 Bad," "Butterflies" (the remix with Eve is fantastic) and "Cry."

Finally, one of his best videos in terms of associating all of this with movies would be "Liberian Girl" and then probably my second favorite song of his after "Human Nature" would have to be "Give into Me". Both videos are included below.

The world will never have a greater entertainer, we shall always miss you MJ

This is one of the best editorials you ever wrote Brad. For a non-movie related topic, it was very engaging and hearfelt. Good job, great article.

The very best article on MJ's death I've read so far – Finally someone who nails just the perfect amount of each angle that event could be seen from. And I also give you infinite tons of kudos for mentioning "Human Nature" and "Liberian Girl" (which I'm currently listening to), the most overlooked MJ's gems in my music book.

Strange, I find that I actually feel better now that I know someone in the world sees the whole phenomenon exactly like I do. Thank you so much, you made my day.

    Great article!

Yo michael jackson was my idol. I did a report about him 2 years ago. I even have a dvd about him called number ones. When I did the report about him, I thought it would be funny, so I did it as a joke. But when I started learning about him, I started to like him(not in a gay way). He lived a very crappy life. I was like the only one that pretty much liked him. My cousin and I liked him too. But now, hes gone. I almost cried when I heard about it. I didnt cuz I didnt know him. Nobody will ever tell michael jackson jokes ever again. That Bruno scene about mj might get edited off. he south park wont be as funny as it was. He is in a better place now.

Such a good article about Michael Jackson. How can we deny having be influenced and attached to his music. All the tabloids cannot change the way we think about him: one of the best performers ever if not the best, whose name has become well-known in every part of the world. I thought I could not cry when I heard the news, but as I was watching all his music videos, his live performances, how happy he was when being on the stage, to see all his fans cheering and shouting his name, tears naturally fell on my cheeks…(sorry if my english is unreadable)

RIP, Michael. You are an icon and will be missed.

I read about the death of MJ in this site for the first time. I have to say: when I saw this i can“t believe what happens. MJ R.I.P. He will be always the King of Pop.

God knows when its your time and he took the greatest star on earth. He's with another great guy my dad who died last year from the same cause . Love you both .

  10. rolling_streetcar

I love Michael Jackson. His music will live on forever as a monumental achievement. I know he never hurt anyone. Quite the contrary. He did so many good things. This is your best editiorial I've ever seen, Brad.

I forgot to mention that my favorite song of his is the highly underrated "Stranger in Moscow". It's just beautiful, especially with the video.

This is why Ropeofsilicon is the ABSOLUTE BEST site on the net. Brad you are soo cool and that article you wrote was really nice.

My favorite song of his was Billie Jean.

  13. Leandro Dubost

He surely was a very bizarre character, but still an icon. He deserves a place alongside Elvis or Marlon Brando, certainly.
I'm not shocked with his death (I never thought he would've made to 50 anyway), but I feel sorry for him… He will always be remembered as a great entertainer, no doubt about that!

  14. Chantelle

Crazy, that's really all I can say about it. Feel pretty much the same as what you wrote.

On a side note, I don't think I've ever heard or seen either of the videos you posted. just watched Liberian Girl, what a walk down memory lane that was…

  15. Debbie Matthew de Rdgz

Excellent article about a real pop icon, Brad. I also think you hit the perfect balance on the highs and lows of Michael's topsy-turvy life. I was a bit older than you the first time I heard Thriller: I am actually Michael's age (wow that just hit me!), and my husband and I were on our honeymoon in Cancun when we saw, heard, and danced to the video at the disco for the first time. I'll never forget it. I love Human Nature as well, and also most of the Off the Wall album. His musical legacy will live forever. Right up there with Sinatra, Elvis and The Beatles.

Michael broke racial barriers and brought joy to people worldwide. I'm not impressed with attention on celebrity idols dying of natural causes when people are dying in Iran and all over the world. However, I hope in death Michael's family will do one last deed at his funeral to attempt to bring peace and democracy to Iran. His music crosses most all religions and cultures.

MJ's death and funeral can be larger than life if it would promote some of what his songs promoted, such as Man in the Mirror and Heal the World, and direct this toward places like Iran.

Iran and MJ's "They don't really care about us:" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtKshycrCrs

"No one wants to be defeated." MJ's "Beat it," Amadinajad! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvOx4avw8WY

Also, his summer concert plans could be showcased with the dancers. The Jackson 5 and friends could also showcase a celebration of his life.

  17. Mason

Never been a fan of MJ, but I can't deny he is an icon and I was surprised by the news.

    RIP

Also, Brad, one of the greatest articles EVER on the net.

  18. Margie

Good article…thanx for posting "Give in to Me" video, my favorite MJ song. And I had completely forgotten about "Liberian Girl"…haven't seen that one in years! As with a lot of other fans, I am devestated by his passing. There will be no other like Michael Jackson!

  19. simpsons fan

ever remember that simpson's episode? where there was this guy who sounded like MJ, and i found out that it was really MJ who voiced it. that episode was one of the best i've seen. MJ God Bless You and Thank You For The Music!
    nice article!

  20. I think this is the most honest and heartfelt article I've read on Michael. Thanks for that.

I too, grew up listening to him. I can't think of my childhood without thinking of his music. What he is I do not know and I'm not sure I want to know, however, like any genius, he has his eccentricities and is driven by his own personal demons. I'll rather hold on to that music as for the rest of him, we may never get to the real truth.

I must say though, I've been avoiding the media coverage of his death. Today's media makes me gag at the glee they always show in tearing down the living with no thought for the truth yet very keen to pay tributes to the dead with nauseating insincerity. I guess I do want him to get the attention because he's an icon that left an indelible mark in music yet I wish they'll all shut their crap and disappear.

  21. omg some of ppl make fun of him
that is so not nice ,that he wase so whit that dosent maen to make fun of him
he just rock and i love michael so much :( im so upset that hes not with us any more i will geve him my life if you will eble to :(
R.I.P Michael Jackson we love you all :D
when i will die i will love to see you in there :D

  22. I am a fan of MJ and I don't think too much can ever be said or written about him. He was and is an icon. It is indeed tragic what happened to him. Something that was avoidable.

  23. BLONDY

    I loved your review
even though he died 5 months ago I search for his news everyday and i miss him so much
once again thanks for the review
