Paramount Blu-ray Extravaganza! | |
| Thanks to Comic Con my Blu-ray watching abilities were basically destroyed. I came home to several new Blu-ray discs that arrived in the time I was away and out of all of them eight of them hit the shelves today. Six of them I am going to detail here as they are catalog titles. The others I will get to in a second. The first one was Top Gun of which I reviewed on HD DVD (review here) and was not very kind to considering the HD DVD edition contained none of the features from the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. Well, I am happy to say the Blu-ray comes with all the goodies (documentaries, music videos, commentaries, etc.) that I loved from the DVD. On top of that… Next up is the Beowulf Unrated Director's Cut, another edition that was once on HD DVD and has now been made available on Blu-ray. And guess what… Yup, it's once again an improvement, and this one is an improvement in proving how much better the BD technology is over HD DVD. This one comes with all the same features as the HD edition (commentaries, in-movie specials, featurettes, etc.) and just like the HD edition, several of them are in HD. However, with all the same features, instead of two discs, the BD edition is capable of putting everything on one disc and it also has an upgrade in audio with an included TrueHD track. If you are a fan then I once again recommend an upgrade. Personally, I am not a huge fan and probably would have never bought any of the editions, but that is just me. Finally, we have all four Jack Ryan films (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears) on Blu-ray. This is actually the first time these four films have been made available in high-definition, but I actually own the HD DVD editions as well. Way back when, Paramount was all set to release an HD DVD Jack Ryan box set. I received it and began the process of reviewing them. Since they were catalog titles I was going to review them in some sort of an ordered list of "Best to Worst Jack Ryan Films". However, due to a technical difficulty the special features listed on the boxes weren't available on the discs and they never saw the light of day. Suffice to say, I never did the needless review. Well, all four are here now and the special features, which are actually just transferred over from the DVDs and quite generic are all intact. Of the bunch The Hunt for Red October is clearly the one to buy, and I personally have a small infatuation with Clear and Present Danger. The other two aren't bad either, but we all have our favorites. I actually wouldn't be surprised if folks snatched up all four, even Sum of All Fears is tolerable if you are in the right mood, but it isn't one I would generally recommend. I have included links to buy any of the six titles featured in this bunch just below. Have at it and I hope I was able to help if only a little bit with this Paramount onslaught. | |
Doomsday | |
| Well, if you have been living under a rock or only check RopeofSilicon headlines every other year you will have read my scathing Blu-ray review and Sara's equally stomach turning DVD review. Suffice to say, around here Doomsday isn't getting much love. This film feels like a rip-off of a rip-off. All originality is out the window and a director I had gained immense respect for after only one film (The Descent) made me feel sorry for him with one outing. Sure, the guts gore and violence he does so well is here, but the story is absent despite attempts to make it a coherent and thought-provoking future tale. | |
The Lost Boys | |
| It's the week for Lost Boys as you can open up your wallet to a Blu-ray double-dip or just go the DVD route for the new Lost Boys: The Tribe, a sequel to the 1987 teen classic that I have heard from numerous sources is no good. I have yet to receive my review copy, but I expect it will be here tomorrow or at least some time this week and I am anxious to see how it all works out. What I have heard is that "O.C." hottie, Autumn Reeser, is awful in the flick while Corey Feldman is actually pretty good. The film also stars Kiefer Sutherland's half-brother Angus Sutherland as well as Jamison Newlander and Tad Hilgenbrink. You can buy The Lost Boys on Blu-ray right here or you can select from any of the versions of The Lost Boys: The Tribe below for purchase. | |
Shine a Light | |
| This is one of the films Paramount also just sent me on Blu-ray. We already have a DVD review from Sara (read it here) in which she gives it a positive reaction. The only reason I handed that one off for review is I am not at all a Rolling Stones fan. However, I knew the Blu-ray would show up and I thought I may still need to give this one a shot since it is Martin Scorsese directing and, as we all know with documentary style features, it doesn't really matter how interested in the subject matter you are, if it is done well you will probably like it no matter what. I do expect to give this one a watch soon and hopefully I will have a positive review for you when I do. | |
Never Back Down | |
| I handed the Blu-ray edition of this one off because I have absolutely zero interest in watching it. Never Back Down looks like a poor man's Karate Kid and that isn't saying much since there is only room for one Karate Kid and a copy that looks like it tries to mix in something of a street aspect to it doesn't appeal to me at all. You can read our Blu-ray review right here. I actually won't be surprised if this one does well on Blu-ray and DVD considering it managed $24 million at the box-office off a $20 million budget. Not bad for a film that looks as dumb as this one looks. | |
