'Oldboy', 'Don Jon', 'Last Vegas' and 'Wizard of Oz 3D' in Today's MPAA Ratings

MPAA Ratings for One Chance, Don Jon, Homefront, Last Vegas, Oldboy and The Wizard of Oz 3D
Latest MPAA Ratings: BULLETIN NO: 2281

Lots of R-ratings in today's bulletin with the obvious restricted rating classifications for Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon, which already has its own red band clip, but how about the R-rating for Last Vegas, which CBS Films plans to appeal.

In Last Vegas three old friends (Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Robert De Niro) decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single played by Michael Douglas. Does it turn into The Hangover? Most likely no, considering the R-rating is merely "for brief sexual content." Damn, what exactly is it?

In addition to that you have Jason Statham's Homefront also earning an R, the Weinstein's opera-centric feature One Chance with a PG-13 and a PG-rating for the upcoming 3-D re-release of The Wizard of Oz.

No shock with the R's for Oldboy or Don Jon (but the R rating for the former sound pretty hard, harder than the original), and I've heard that Last Vegas is pretty tame so the light R and the appeal are not shocking.

Really? The original Oldboy is pretty graphic and some of those scenes still stick with me. They are, however, pretty stylized so they don't seem as gritty/brutal as they might have if the movie was told in a more 'realistic' manner. And there's plenty of sex and nudity going on, too. If I even mention some of the scenes from Oldboy to some of my friends who have seen it they instantly shudder, hahaha.

This came out way harsher than I intended. Whups!

I'm not necessarily saying that it will be more graphic than the original Oldboy but that the rating sounds a bit more intense.

Um, wasn't Wizard of Oz already rated G? Are they changing the content? Not sure why it got re-rated...

    • Chris Etrata

When Wizard Of Oz was first submitted to the mpaa after it formed the rating system (Im guessing the decade when it was submitted for a rating around in the 70's) was G. For many years, its rereleases have all used that G rating. For the 3d rerelease however, warner bros decided to submit for a fresh rating and got that surprising pg rating as well. To their credit, it is a bit scary for young children though.

Damn right - Mrs. Gulch on her bike used to give my Mom nightmares (not kidding)

scary scary women, that image will undoubtedly stay with me forever *shudder*

Not surprised about Oldboy or Don Jon being rated R. I really don't want them to appeal Last Vegas though. It sounds like a good premise for an R rated comedy.

I like how the MPAA has only now decided The Wizard of Oz has "some scary moments." Nice work, guys.

They were the same guys who gave It's Alive a pg rating.

I kind of wished CBS Films wouldn't appeal Las Vegas, but oh well.

Seriously - just give it a hard R. Was really looking forward to it - now not so much. :(
