New Poster, Image and Clip from Disney/Pixar's 'Up'
Are we looking at next year's Best Animated feature?
Looking at the list of animated films in 2009 I see Coraline, Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, G-Force (does live-action mix count?), 9, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Astro Boy, A Christmas Carol, Planet 51, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel (again, live-action mix), The Princess and the Frog and, of course, Pixar's Up.
Should the animated/live-action mix films in that list be considered for Oscar contention we have a total of twelve films and if three more should get in there that would mean 15 eligible films for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar in 2010, which means the category could get a total of five nominees rather than the traditional three.
Based on history alone I can't help but think Up would be a contender, 9 looks like a lot of fun, The Princess and the Frog is Disney's return to 2-D animation and A Christmas Carol is yet another Robert Zemeckis attempt at mo-cap animation and we will just have to see what happens there. Neither The Polar Express or Beowulf were nominated in the Best Animated category as the question "Is motion capture animation actually animation?" is likely to pop up yet again.
However, I am here to give you new goodies from Up as a new image has popped into the RopeofSilicon gallery and is teased above and can be seen in full right here, a new poster, which is teased to the right, can be seen in full right here and a bootleg clip can be seen just below.
I think Up looks great as 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell set out to explore the world in a house navigated by hundreds of helium balloons. Check out the clip below and more from the film right here.

I am most looking forward to Up and 9.
With the unfortunate Wall-E snub for best picture (a travesty in my book), I think Pixar is going to get a best picture nomination within 3 years with either Up or Toy Story 3. It'll be the Academy's way of saying: Ok Ok, we messed up, sorry for the Wall-E snub. Hope this makes up for it
You can tell those arent the lead's voices, but the clip looks great!
The moving Bolt is 1 of my favorites, its better than the movie Kung Fu Panda:-)
up,coraline, monsters vs. aliens, and 9 look very good, i think for this year in animated features we will see more darker and less funny films because most people think animated as funny, but with 9 and coralime this might not be the case
OHH hell to the yea they are making cloudy with a chance for meatballs!!!!! that is one of my favorites kids books!!!
Since the award first began in 2001, Pixar has managed to have 6 out of 6 films nominated for Best Animated Film; however only 3 of those films (Finding Nemo, The Incredibles & Ratatouille) actually went on to win the award – so, while noone can question Pixar's reign over all-things-animation, they only have a 50% success rate in winning the top Animated Oscar.
Will UP be nominated? of course (even the good-but-not-great Cars was nominated); however, it will have some tough competition. I actually think '09 will be fondly remembered as the year that 2D animation made a comeback. I think it ironic that the studio that made it's name on 3D animation (Pixar) chose to resurrect 2D animation at Disney.
