Shame

I first learned of Steve McQueen's new movie, Shame, when a promotional poster and the synopsis were revealed at the American Film Market back in early November. At that time it was revealed McQueen would be re-teaming with Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) whom first burst on the scene with McQueen's devastating debut feature Hunger (read my review of Criterion's Blu-ray here) a little over two years ago.

Today we find out Fassbender will be joined by Carey Mulligan (An Education) and James Badge Dale ("24") have also joined the cast with the film to begin shooting on location in New York next month. Here is the film's synopsis:

Brandon (Fassbender) is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After Sissy (Mulligan), his wayward younger sister, moves into his apartment, Brandon's world spirals out of control. From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

The timing makes the film ripe for a late 2011 festival run most likely eying Venice and/or Toronto. McQueen's Hunger didn't earn the kudos many likely thought it deserved, but it certainly put the filmmaker on the map and his sophomore effort should be looked at with wanting eyes, especially considering he's just landed one of the hottest actresses of the moment in the industry. This will definitely be a film Oscar pundits will be looking out for late next year.

With this synopsis, and this poster, and this title…would it be wrong to assume Fassbender is going to hit on his sister on this film?

If that's what the film is about, then bold. Very bold.
