SYNOPSIS: 2007 Cannes Best Actress winner JEON Do-youn teams up with renowned director Im Sang-soo for this suspense-laden remake based on late director Kim Ki-young's 1960 original, The Housemaid, long considered a classic in Korean cinema. A digitally re-mastered version of Kim's film was screened at Cannes in 2008.
Im Sang-soo's The Housemaid follows the story of Eun-yi, a middle-aged divorcee forced through circumstance to takes a position as a housemaid with an upper class family. It is not long before her master, Hoon, takes advantage of his social position by sharing her bed.
When Eun-yi becomes pregnant and her secret is discovered by the family, she is compelled to have an abortion. Her forced termination turns Eun-yi's already fragile mental condition for the worse and she decides to take matters into her own hands.
Director Im Sang-soo previously directed the Cannes selected The President's Last Bang (Director's Fortnight, 2005) and the Venice selected A Good Lawyer's Wife (2003). Actress Jeon Do-youn won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 2007 for her hailed performance in Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine.
The Housemaid has a running time of and has not been rated by the MPAA.
