SYNOPSIS:
Game 6 is the story of Nicky Rogan, a New York playwright on a run of bad luck who is committed to the inevitability of failure. He woos it, coddles it, rolls it around in his mouth before he swallows it.
The action takes place on the day of the opening of his new play. Having made his name in boulevard comedy, he has ventured this time closer to home and has written something he really cares about. Though he won’t admit it even to himself, he is desperate for success. From the outset, things begin to go wrong. His daughter informs him that his wife wants a divorce. His mistress informs him that his lead actor has a parasite in his brain and can’t remember his lines, and an old acquaintance regales him with tales of Steven Schwimmer, a new and powerful critic who is so poisonous, so destructive the New York theater lives in terror of him. He is so hated in fact, he is forced to live in an unnumbered apartment and carry a gun to the theater.
All this is complicated by the fact that the film is set on October 25, 1986, the day of game 6 of 1986 World Series, Boston Red Sox verses New York Mets. Though Nicky has grown up in Hells Kitchen, his life has been shaped by the most counterintuitive of choices. He has been a life long Red Sox fan, supporting them loss after extravagant loss, throughout his entire life.
