Tim Burton brings his unique directing style back to the big screen in one of the best films you will see this year.
Big Fish is beautiful and while it may not be as dark as Burton's former flicks it has the distinctive look and feel of Burton's touch. All the colors pop off the screen and the acting is a perfect compliment to the world that Burton has devised.
One pleasant thing is to see Ewan McGregor playing a character that fits his style. While the reaches of Obi Wan-Kenobi may be a little too far for McGregor his part in Big Fish as Edward Bloom is a welcome change and his interactions on his journey are heart-warming and touching in every sense of the words, especially as Edward tries to woo the love of his life as he stands in a field of 10,000 daffodils. BREATHTAKING!
Big Fish can best be described as a tall tale telling the life story of Edward Bloom (Albert Finney) who has always been a teller of tall-tales about his oversized life as a young man (McGregor), when his wanderlust led him on an unlikely journey from a small-town in Alabama, around the world, and back again.
Bloom is able to charm all who hear the story except for his estranged son Will (Crudup). When his mother Sandra (Lange) tries to reunite them, Will must learn how to separate fact from fiction as he comes to terms with his father's great feats and great failings.
Bloom's past finds him in extraordinary situations and meeting the most unique characters. His encounters take him to Vietnam and across the country as he meets "Siamese" twins, giants, witches, and more.
The lifestyle Bloom led can most closely be compared to that of Forrest Gump, but with this vision the addition of Burton's style of scenery and direction gives us sets as forest come alive and lights seem to shine brighter. His ability to bring colors to life is just as uncanny as the story itself that Big Fish is a must-NOT-miss.
