Movie Review: The A-Team (2010)
Heavy on action, light on story, big on fun
Photo: 20th Century Fox
The A-Team begins "Somewhere in Mexico" and shortly thereafter we jump to an action piece "Somewhere Else in Mexico," which is to say if the trailers didn't tip you off, by the time you're five minutes into this film you're well aware that while it's set in the real world, it isn't concerned with the rules of that world. The A-Team is just as outlandish as the trailers make it out to be and it's easy to have fun with for every bit of its silliness. The mayhem that ensues is the most appealing part of this action adventure even though the finale does get a little too big for its own good almost insinuating there was money left to spend. No problem, this film is never trying to be anything more than a fun and wild romp, and with a bit of charisma and some solid action pieces it's worth the time at the theater.
The cast includes Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Maury Sterling and Gerald McRaney. For more information on this film including pictures, trailers and a detailed synopsis choose from the following menu.
Review
"The A-Team" is a 20th Century Fox release, directed by Joe Carnahan and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence throughout, language and smoking. The running time is 1 hour 58 minutes.
Liam Neeson seems prepped and ready to take on the lead role of Col John 'Hannibal' Smith after his gun-toting affair in Taken and he's surrounded by a solid group of characters best recognized for their eccentrities than anything else. Bradley Cooper plays the playboy with a frat boy mentality Lt. Templeton 'Faceman' Peck, UFC fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson plays Sgt Bosco 'B.A.' Baracus (the role made famous by Mr. T) and Sharlto Copley (District 9) plays the psychotic pilot Capt. 'Howling Mad' Murdock. Together they make up the elite Special Forces group known as the A-Team.
The story begins eight years in the future suggesting troop withdrawal from the Middle East and involves a counterfeit money making scheme, the CIA, the Army, private military and the Department of Defense as the members of the A-Team are set up for a crime they didn't commit. Smith finds himself and his team court-martialed and imprisoned, with the only solution being to break-out, clear their names and catch the culprit. Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson are along for the ride, getting in the way when the can, but for the most part adding just enough story to get our team from one action set piece to the next, and I thank them for it.
Strangely enough, reading through the press notes, they attribute the ten years it took to get the film made as an attempt to avoid the campy nature of the television show. Either they gave up on that idea or Carnahan and the film's two other credited screenwriters' attempt at avoiding camp is what makes The A-Team so campy. This is not an emotional feature with characters you care for or plot development. This is ludicrous action sequence after action sequence involving flying tanks and CG dock explosions, and while it doesn't make for a very thought provoking film, it makes for a fun one with oddball characters and plenty of recycled catchphrases.
I won't argue with anyone that says the film lacks in storytelling, but I will argue if it's said the film lacks energy and entertainment. Because that's all this film is, a big explosive ball of entertainment. We have characters laughing in the face of danger and pulling off unthinkable stunts with smiles on their faces. Carnahan has managed to put together a solid cast of actors able to play such characters and has woven together just enough craziness to make for a fun film. Logic may be out the window, but I assure you if you go in with an eye for an energetic action flick you won't be disappointed.

Sounds like they caught the style of the TV series well then in making the film.
I'm not going to mind the bodies too much I think – when you get older and watch the series you tend to realise that was a bit of a stretch (among many) anyway! – and I'm glad that it's seemingly not aiming for any pretensions about what it offers.
The TV series didn't do that – the film shouldn't have either. I'm looking forward to this now even more than I already was!
Hope it does good box-office.
Just got back from seeing it. Man, was that great fun, or what. Enjoyed the hell out of it, and I'm now officially a Copley fan. Everybody except Biel and Rampage was excellent, but Sharlto had me rolling on the floor. "I can see the bullets in 3-D!"
Agree, just got back from 1st day show here in Indonesia, it was great, very entertaining!
This week is officialy one of the best for 2010 summer, with both The A team and Karate Kid!
Go see both!
Regards from Indonesia
This was probably the most fun I've had at the movies all summer. It was a perfect blend of action and comedy, and I was actually impressed with Jackson's work. He didn't seem content in just doing a Mr. T impersonation and surprisingly portrayed his personal conflict very strongly. I was expecting him to bring the movie down, but he didn't do that one bit.
Biel was a bit bland and the action sequences were of the overly frantic Bourne/Quantum of Solace variety. I'm just really glad the movie was fun because I've been disappointed by so many movies this summer that it's nice to finally see one that exceeds my expectations. Good review.
I fucking LOVED this movie! It was slick, action packed, and funny as hell. This movie proves that Sharlto Copley is a better comedion than Bradley Cooper. That whole bit early on where he's hanging to the helicopter rotors singing "You Spin Me Right Round" had me in stiches! The film is a genuine popcorn movie, and it proves to be the first REALLY good movie of the summer. This and Prince of Persia (I know you didn't care for it, Brad, but I thought it was some pretty cool shit, which seams to be the offensive word of choice for the cast of this movie, seeing it is used about 15 times, all of which to insult people, or in a state of shock.) But, Inception isn't gonna "Pity any Fools" and blow away ALL the competition and audiences.
Grade: What do you think. Give the A-Team an A!
I just got back from seeing this movie. I can't believe it is only a B. I loved this movie from start to end. One of the great movies of the Summer. It is worth every single dime to see and see again. I will be going back a couple more times to see it. It was really a good movie.
They kept it true to the whole feel of the classic A-Team. Would have been nice to see some cameos of the originals. Would have loved to have seen new B.A. and old B.A. together. If you want to see a movie and have a good time seeing it then A-Team is for you. It is a good movie for Adults and Kids. You both will be laughing at the scenes and a few of the one liners that come from Murdock.
All and all for me the A-Team gets an A+! Enjoy the movie and don't waste your money on movies like Karate Kid. This is something far better for your money.
What a boatload of fun this film was. Non-stop laughs and action from beginning to end. Will be watching it again tomorrow.
Gotta agree with you here, Brad. Check your logic at the door and just enjoy the action, campy dialogue and jokes, and of course, explosions! Very enjoyable movie for those who want to just decompress and not think about plot.
B or 7/10.
Wishing they released this on 3-D… Haha!
Great review… first movie of the summer that has exceeded my expectations, plenty of humor, plenty of action, thin on plot, but when you laugh this hard in a movie, who cares….
All of the best quotes in the movie belonged to Sharlto Copley:
"You spin me right round….."
"Hey…. Which way to Berlin?"
"I can see the bullets in 3-D, its like they're actually shooting at us"
So far, best movies of the year:
1. Kick-Ass
2. How to train your dragon (the 3-D was phenomenal)
3. The A-Team
4. Iron Man
5. Get Him to the Greek
Honerable Mention: The Losers – great soundtrack, very entertaining
i thinks this movie is really cool and funny… can you imagine that someone who very strong, scared with flying??
and he's flying with someone that crazy, it's must be funny.. :D
Amazing Movie. Brilliant review.
But the line 'which way to Berlin' is a reference to another movie. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it is please, it's driving me mad!
The reference is to WW2. They're Americans, in American tanks, in Germany, coming outta the water just like D-Day. Get it?
