To be competely honest, I've gotten much more enjoyment out of the last two seasons of Mad Men than I did out of this film. Hard to compare a TV show to a movie, but I think I'm justified in this case.

What irked me the most about the film was the abrupt changes in tone, seemingly without cause. I understand emotions can change in a split second, but the film never truly established an atmosphere in which its tone could change. The first hour was lovely, and then the film tried to go all dark and preachy, and it failed because the transition wasn't pulled off well. Also, Newman's score was, at times, misplaced and distracting.

That said, the film is wonderfully acted (although I feel DiCaprio overdid the whole "50's" thing) and a visual treat.

Well it's natural if you read the script just before getting in the theaters to feel that sth was missing!!I mean if you know what the characters are gonna say, what's the point? The movie is the best this year, and one of the best ever. It has groundbreaking methods both in acting and in directing.

I think the reason why the film feels like it is missing something (at least to me) is because I don't agree the slightest bit with its message. The message, at least to me, seemed to be something along the lines of 'beware of falling into the pitfalls of marriage, children, and a career.' To be honest, I think the film takes this concept a little too far and makes it a little too overdramatic.

Maybe it wouldn't have bothered me if you didn't see real moments of love between the two main characters, but their relationship falls apart in ways that seem to me to be contrived (I just don't buy him being pulled back into his job).

Maybe a little more explanation of who exactly the two main characters were before they met each other (a 20-30 minute "courting" sequence perhaps) might have been beneficial, but if it isn't in the book, I wouldn't want it in the film.

As it stands, this is just an exercise in great direction and great acting (especially Michael Shannon who is just amazing), but I was left unconvinced and unimpressed by the story.

I've only read the script, but I failed to connect with any characters. Obviously I am missing out on what makes film... well, film, but at the most basic level, Frank and April just are too distant.

Acting was great in this movie and both Dicaprio and Winslet were as expected. I would definitely say that Michael Shannon stands out and deserves praise. This movie was just alright in my opinion. Great acting is just not enough. There was so much more to explore in the relationships of other characters. They focused on Frank and April rightfully so but didn't dig deeper into the origins and feelings of the surrounding characters. I would have to give this one a C+.
