Streep and Tucci are great together, but this movie is a bust

Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep… the only two reasons to watch Julie & Julia
Photo: Columbia Pictures

I have a hard time saying Julie & Julia is even half of a good movie despite the fact that's exactly what it is. I hesitate because the half that works is only due to the fact Meryl Streep gives an all-time performance as kitchen legend Julia Child and Stanley Tucci matches her step-for-step as her loving husband Paul. The two do this with very little help from a script that depends more on its actors than any script should. On the other side of the equation is Julie Powell, played to the best of her ability by Amy Adams, but considering she was given nothing to work with whatsoever, every time we get saddled with her storyline the life of the film is drained into a dark chasm of despair.

More About This Movie
Directed by Nora Ephron, Julie & Julia is an adaptation of Julia Child's memoir "My Life in France" and Julie Powell's book "Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen." Ephron adapted the two stories into one non-cohesive script, which follows Powell as she hopes to accomplish something in her life by setting out to make all 524 recipes in Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" cookbook over the course of one year and blog about the experience. While this is the film's backbone, the other half of the film cuts back in time into the life of Child and her life in France learning to cook and writing said cookbook.

The Julie Powell half of the story is shot in her poorly lit and rundown apartment. It's by no means an atmosphere worth visiting and certainly one that doesn't do anything for the appeal of the food she is cooking. Despite how dark and ugly all of her scenes are, the worst part of Powell's story is she isn't a likable character and her relationship with her husband (if you can call it that) is neither believable nor appetizing. Ephron gives the audience no reason to cheer for Powell as she sets about her task and as a result you couldn't care less if she pulls it off. Suffice to say, when your character admits she's a bitch and even her so-called best friend agrees with her, you need to do more than have her conquer the recipe for boned duck to give the audience a reason to like her.

On the other side of the equation you have a wholly believable relationship between Paul and Julia Child, which comes off almost effortlessly. Streep plays to Julia's eccentricities with excitement and a convincing lust for life. Tucci takes on Paul with all the understanding in the world as a caring and supportive husband that loves his wife with all his heart. The two stories in this film couldn't be any more opposite one another and with absolutely no payoff in the end, there is very little reason for either to exist, although a 90 minute film of just Julia's side of the story would have been a thing of beauty.

Instead, we get two hours of ups and downs. Laughter, friendship, love, mutual respect, trials, tribulations and overcoming anything that stands in your way make up Julia's story. Meanwhile, Julie too suffers trials and tribulations and is determined to overcome them, but she does so without laughter, hardly a real friend in site and to say her marriage is filled with love or an ounce of respect would be a stretch as she wallows in self-pity when things don't go her way and pats herself on the back when they do, both at the expense of her marriage.

I haven't talked with anyone yet that felt the Julie Powell side of the story worked, other than to enhance the Julia Child side. This isn't always a problem since it's rare you will like all aspects of any film, but when things are 50/50 as this one is you run into problems.

I would compare Julie & Julia to placing the audience in a boxing match against Mike Tyson with swimsuit models working your corner. You are loving the rubdown between rounds, but they keep ringing the bell giving Tyson a chance to continually bash your face in. Do the rubdowns make up for the pummeling? I don't think so. And who would have ever thought a character played by Amy Adams would be compared to getting punched by Mike Tyson all while Julia Child is compared to swimsuit models? Now do you understand what this film did to me?

Think you will be in the minority with the C-, but all seem to agree the Streep half was better then Adams. KC Star went as far as saying it was Nora Ephron's best movie.

  2. Grace

I completely agree with this whole article, including the rating. Thank you for giving such an honest opinion.

  3. Sebastian

I wanna see it, don't ask me why :P

Your review completely concurs with what I've been reading, except that Roger Ebert doesn't like Tucci any more than Adams.

The premise sounds so good…a bit of "The Hours" incongruity that nevertheless finds a common heart. But this definitely does NOT work. One wonders, however, will Streep's work here wind up being nominated? One wonders.

I completely disagree with you. I saw this movie opening day and Loved it. It is so well put together. Meryl, yes is fantastic as she usually is, but I really enjoyed both of the stories put together. I really don't know if I would have wanted to see a movie just about Julia Child. For me this was just enough of both of them. I liked the story of Julie Powell and her trying to do something not necessarily to change her life but it's something that made her feel good, gave her something to look forward to. She was stuck in a job she didn't like as alot of us are and decided she needed to do something maybe for herself. As for admitting she's a Bitch, I do that often.. But I think when your up at 5am and don't' get to bed by 12am and have people complaining at you all day long you have a right to BITCH. Some of that may be exaggerated cause it's a movie but still. And you really can't go to this movie hungry cause theres so much YUMMY looking food. I'm not a critic and I don't write movie reviews but I really think it's all about what you like when it comes to being a critic and who you like.. I don't care for Action films so I'm sure that if I went and saw G.I Joe, I would not review it all that well it's not what I care for. It's kind of like politics you vote for who you like. But I'm actually glad you reviewed it at a C- because I know that alot of people who go to movies that are reviewed badly by critic Because not always but Usually they turn out to be a really really good movie.. JUST MY OPINION

After reading all of the major critic's reviews, yours was BY FAR the most negative and critical. I read your review first yesterday (Friday, 8/7) morning. If I had read only your review, I probably would not have gone to see "Julie and Julia", but thanks to the glowing and positive reviews by respected critics in the New York Times, L.A. Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, S. F. Chronicle and USA Today, I am again excited and looking forward to seeing this film.

  7. Patricia

@Kevin: "middling," "disappointing," "uneven," are the terms I'm reading in the other reviews. RopeofSilicon seems to be saying the same thing as most of the rest. Meryl Streep is fabulous but that only makes 1/2 of a good movie. If that's good enough for you, hey, wonderful. There's a movie for everyone, afterall. We don't have to all agree.

And watch how you toss around the terms like "respected" when referring to critics. That, afterall, is subjective. I respect Brad here at the Rope. I don't always agree with him. But I respect him. And do the other sites have such an interesting set of commentators? I blush to say, "No."

  8. Kevin

    Patricia,
I should have stated "other respected critics" in my original comment. Like you, I not only respect, but admire, and appreciate Brad and the ROPES site (immensely).

  9. BR

Brad, i usually visit RopeofSilicon first and read your review of certain movies I am going to see because I share pretty much the same taste in movies that you do….for the most part! But I cannot agree with you on this movie.

I thought that Amy Adam's character and her husband had the typical marriage in the U.S. they fought and bickered but at the end of that day they still loved each other and they knew it. Adams character was mildly depressing to me three quarters of the movie, and yes, Streep and Tucci were AMAZING. Streep was just as good in this film as she was in Doubt.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. Solid entertainment for your money, but I will continue to support and respect your reviews of films (and probably agree with you on most of them), but this one…I just couldn't see eye-to-eye with you

  10. Very fun movie. Meryl Streep is fabulous, as always, and Stanley Tucci is very charming as her husband. Young Julie, Amy Adams, was played very well too. It was all good fun, and makes you want to go to cooking school.
