Is it real or just a dream?

It's hard to think of another studio blockbuster of this size as smart, dark and complex as Inception. It's a studio risk to spend this much money on an intelligent $200+ million production without dragons, superheroes or iconic graphic novels involved – though the fact it's directed by the man behind The Dark Knight doesn't hurt.

Inception is an original story guided by a broken moral compass and considering writer/director Christopher Nolan's track record this is exactly the sort of anti-hero content he revels in. Like his breakout hit Memento, Inception plays with time and space with a Mulholland/Lynchian vibe, Kubrickian corridors and a taste for spy novels and corporate espionage.

Inception"Inception" is a Warner Bros. Pictures release, directed by Christopher Nolan and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout. The running time is 2 hours 28 minutes.

The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Lukas Haas, Tom Berenger and Pete Postlethwaite.

More About This Movie
At the center of it all is a group of con men specifically trained to navigate your thoughts, and hired to steal whatever secrets your subconscious may be hiding. However, this time, rather than the routine extraction, their interest is in planting the seed, or the "inception" of an idea. The morality of this scenario is overshadowed by the team's leader, a father with a desire to see his children once again and this job could win him his freedom. These aren't heroes we're watching on screen, they're villains of the most dangerous sort. They come at you when you least expect it and are at your most vulnerable… in your dreams.

Nolan has designed an entire set of rules to carry out this miraculous story, a story so big that while you're watching it you can't believe it isn't falling apart and is instead only getting increasingly complex. Yet it's never so complex you can't follow what's going on, though you will be left to question everything you saw just before the credits roll.

To tell the story Nolan has recruited a perfect cast of names that properly fit each role and bring something to their characters either through their command of a scene, the cut of their jib or the overall joy it is to hear them delivering lines (I'm looking at you Mr. Tom Hardy).

Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb is at the center of it all, an extractor with an ambiguous past who has been forced to turn to a world of illegality to maintain a place in it. DiCaprio reflects Cobb's paranoia and torment all while maintaining a modicum of control over the team he's assembled to carry out the job. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer) plays Arthur, the researcher of the group; Tom Hardy (Bronson) brings his personality to Eames, a dreamworld forger and light-hearted tormentor of Arthur; Dileep Rao (Avatar) plays the team's chemist Yusuf; Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) plays Saito, the man with the business deal; and Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later) plays the mark whose mind is the scene of the crime.

The two lovely ladies of the story begin with Marion Cotillard as Mal, Cobb's wife and source of constant anguish. It's hard to imagine a replacement for Cotillard whose soft features, delicate line delivery and wide eyes add intrigue with only a glance. If Inception has a heart it beats with Mal.

The film's other female voice is Ellen Page as the team's architect Ariadne, a name taken directly from Greek mythology. She serves as the conscience of the film, questioning the rights and wrongs, but like the audience she soon succumbs to the wonder of it all. The imagination gone wild and the belief anything is possible. This is the true wonder of Inception, the fact Nolan has created a world where anything can happen and the logic of it all services this creative spirit. You aren't left to wonder how and if something can be done, and in seeing it twice I'm relatively positive I've been able to sort out every layer of this mind-bending onion.

Action sequences mix the weightlessness of The Matrix with the practical effects of 2001. CG is used liberally, but never in a way that it stalls or disrupts the story. Most impressive is Nolan's embracing of the slow motion craze, but only because he uses it to tell the story. Slow motion has reason here, this isn't the oft copied Zack Snyder on overdrive. While certain shots are certainly made to look cooler through the use of slow motion they also service the rules of navigating the world of the dream.

Hans Zimmer provides another powerful and effective score and I swear film editor Lee Smith was asked to edit this thing down as much as humanly possible. At just under two-and-a-half-hours Inception couldn't be any shorter than it is and if any cuts were made it would appear they were made to tighten the action sequences as any and all story exposition is an absolute must.

Christopher Nolan has managed to bring a challenging blockbuster of epic size and scope to the big screen and he deserves it with the $1+ billion he earned Warner Bros. after The Dark Knight. Considering the production budget on this one it may come at a loss for the studio, but if such gems as this are the "thank you" from a studio to a talented filmmaker, I'm happy the gesture was made and as an audience member I gladly accept.

Reviews at Metacritic are NOT looking sexy. But glad to hear you liked it.

    • Colin

Yeah metacritic still has yet to count a number of the positive reviews that are out there. Just curious how often do you give films an A+ Brad?

There does seem to be a critical backlash against the movie though. Not sure if it because they don't like the hype and want they movie to fail but reading through some of the negative reviews, cough, cough, Rex Reed, there seems to be more of an agenda then a level critique involved.

While it is true that some noteworthy Review sites haven't been blown away by Chris Nolan's latest epic (in fact one down-right hated the flick: New York Observer), overall some of the most well-respected critics out there have heaped their praises upon it.

      100 Variety
      100 Roger Ebert
      100 EMPIRE Magazine
      100 New York Post
      100 TIME Magazine
      100 Los Angeles Times
      90..The Hollywood Reporter
      88..RollingStone
      83..EntertainmentWeekly

So, forget what the New York Times says, I have a feeling this film is gonna be the hit of the year and won't be passed over come Academy Awards time.

Metacritic often seems to me to be an extremely bitter crone, rarely satisfied and irritating in her surliness. I avoid the site as much as possible now and certainly don't trust its opinions, precisely for the reason that it reacts so relatively negatively to such a wonderful film as "Inception".

  2. Yes! I've always thought you were a fairly harsh reviewer, so this really says something about the quality of the movie.

  3. shyamex

personally i dont think the movie will tank even though it wont please a wider section of the audience.people WILL throng theatres curious for quality cinema.and warner brothers will definetly reap in the moolah here as well.the popularity of Nolan guarantees this.the weekend itself should be north of 100m+ worldwide.

  4. Dave

I've been very hyped for this movie anyways, but after reading your great review (and Ebert's) I really cannot wait to see this Friday!

  5. darkknightfan12

Thank you for this review. I work a night shift so I will be using vacation tomorrow night to see the midnight viewing! CAN'T WAIT!

  6. BR

    Great news!

  7. randy

my friends dont seem interested in this flick… mostly because the trailers dont send much to them…. i personally will see this movie and judging by the review , more than once.

  8. Sean

Seeing this at a midnight showing tomorrow, can't wait.

  9. Beautifulm

I also enjoyed it a lot, but I did think the film has a few flaws. The dialogue is a bit clunky and the action scenes are kind of overwrought. Other than that, I thought it was a fun and interesting film.

  10. Love the A+. Did you have a favorite performance in the film?

  11. markeels

Inception is great, but there was Paprika, but it is still great.

I just thought I should show some respect to the original concept, like The Departed is great but I respect Infernal Affairs.

    Agree?

  12. AJAY

Brad, according to some of the inception fans on Imdb.com; they have collected many reviews and in their Inception Official Review Thread you have ( 184) positive, (11)negative 94% …… In RT% it stands right now at 89% with 61 reviews. My question is when will all these positive reviews going to be posted at this website ?!!!

  13. Bored_At_Work_AKD

I have yet to disagree with brad's reviews. This solidifies what I already knew, that inception will be what saves this summer. The negative reviews at Metacritic are only written by tools who want to sound contradictory. By going on their page and bashing the review you're only empowering them. Show your support by not commenting. Hail Nolan.

  14. goavs

Why does the New York Press still let Armond White do reviews? He didn't like Inception but he though Grown ups was cheerful and surprisingly heartfelt. WHAT A DUMBASS! I'm seeing Inception opening weekend.

    • goavs

he liked Grownups, Jonah Hex, Clash of the Titans. He gave Toy Story 3 and Inception bad reviews. Kick him off of Rotten Tomatoes

  15. Eric

Do you see this movie getting any Oscar nominations other than in the technical categories?

  16. JM

Midnight showing all the way. Oh jeezus-eff, I can't wait. I think it will make its money back. Maybe it won't open extremely high, but I sense good holds on this one, especially since the rest of the summer is looking pretty weak. Like TDK, it's the last huge film of the summer, and it's going to capitalize on that. I mean, yeah, there's "Salt" next weekend, but I don't think that'll actually cut too far into Inception's demographic. There's people who want smart action, and there's people who want simple action. And after that, no other summer film is going to take away much of Inception's audience.

    • Winchester

The biggest problem I see there is that there's more who like the 'simple action' in the wider movie-going public than like 'smart action' and the fact Inception was going to play to the smart card was always the biggest question mark over it's box-office chances in the wider world.

Does anyone know how it's tracking at this point re opening weekened expectations?

Posted On July 15th, 2010 at 2:32 am in reply to JM.
      • Colin

Not great unfortunatley. It's tracking for about a 55 million dollar openning weekend from what I've been reading.

      • Winchester

That's on the lower end of some predictions I've read that had estimated around $70 plus million.

I'm not sure what (publicly anyway) WB is projecting as the films opening/final/international grosses anyway. They usually have an idea of what they expect their films to make but that large initial outlay is a lot to make back.

Opening at $55 million would almost certainly rule out $200 million domestic unless it had great legs.

  17. Ian

Bought my midnight show ticket just now. Since I'll be home way late tomorrow night I probably won't get my box office predictions in until Friday, but I'm really starting to worry about its box office potential. Most theatres don't seem to be booking an abundance of screens for it and I think it could have trouble clearing $50 million. Of course its harder to say what kind of legs it will have but I think $200 million domestic might be a longshot, especially if it opens low and then just gets buried. I don't know if international audiences can save it; they flocked to the epic sci-fi of Avatar but I think The Matrix might be a better comparison. But whatever the case, this will need to clear $500 million in total grosses to even think about breaking even. But by most accounts it seems to be a truly revolutionary piece of storytelling, so hopefully that's what it will ultimately be seen as, even if it is a failure financially.

  18. Colin

Not sure if this will make a difference to anyone but the film currently has a 91 score on BFCA. Higher than both Winters Bone and the Kids Are Allright.

  19. Mari S

I'll have to come back to read this review a week from friday when Inception opens here. It'll be a loooong wait. Damn.

  20. Personally I liked Prestige the most of his films, followed by TDK, Memento and Begins. The Following and Insomnia was good as well. Man, I seriously hope this delivers.

  21. Sam

Just saw it. Amazing. Action packed and extremely smart. Best movie I've seen in years!!

  22. Tommy

Walking in I was already expecting it to be good as I am a fan of Christopher Nolan's work since Momento. The dialog kept me immersed and focused, while the visuals kept my eyes on the screen. Those key things combined with top notch actors is a movie worth raving about. This is just one of those rare occasions where the movie actually turned out better than the trailer. A+ all the way. Sorry Toy Story 3, but you lost your spot as my number one movie of the year.

  23. Aaron Sanchez

"Bad" really isn't the right word to describe it. Convoluted and contrived seem more fitting. Like all of Nolan's films, it got lost and overwhelmed by the technicality of plot and whittled down to yet another gimmick. I wanted to like it, but from the first 5 minutes, knew I wasn't. Which isn't to say Nolan isn't an amazing craftsman, he most certainly is. He just hasn't mastered the art of story-telling.

    • Tommy

Not sure what movie you went to see.

    • Yeah, I have to agree with Tommy. What movie did you see? It's amazing how he set up the rules and never once broke them. He has a tight story that deals with moral ambiguities and gives us such an ambiguous ending that is also satisfying. I need all my friends to see it just to discuss what we just saw. Of course, it is just your opinion. But in my opinion, the smartest, most complex movie I've seen come out of Hollywood. I guess you can tell I'm delivering an A+ as well. Yes, it's a gimmick, but just like Memento he plays that gimmick to the hilt and has viewers questioning what they just saw.

    • Archaeon

Ummm, just WHAT kind of stories do YOU read???

  24. Rob L

You know, I love the fact that Nolan expects his audience to keep up with the film and story. I followed it eagerly and greatly, and was never overwhelmed in where it was going. What did overwhelm me however, were the visuals, the acting, the "wow" moments, and I mean it all in a good way. Really one of the best films I've seen in a long, long time.

I challenge any other director/writer to take on a story of this magnitude and complexity and do it well.

  25. Matt C

I've seen it. This is a case where I admire it more than like it. It's nice to see an original, complex film but I think it's going to pass over a lot of people's heads.

The thing that bothered me was no emotional catharsis at the end, it's all left up to interpretation. And during the last hour and a half, I kept checking my watch. For me, it's almost too complex for its own good. (And I saw this film from beginning to end, no bathroom/smoke break at all.)

It's different, and definitely worth seeing in theaters. But the question, will enough people 'get' it or will it have a "Watchmen"-style dropoff next weekend?

    • I have to disagree with the lack of emotional catharsis at the end. It had one, a big one. The thing is that this is a movie about reality and dreams, essentially the mind. I feel that the catharsis could be missed because we tend to imagine emotion to be matters of the heart not the mind, but the reality is that emotions are essentially created by the mind. The catharsis at the end is huge, especially when put at the mental level.

I watched Knight and Day right before it and felt more entertained. Inception is too ambitious and flawed. I thought it would be a great story concept but turned out merely a pile of visual concepts.

  27. Kevin M.

Inception was amazing. I agree that a lot of people (especially some fo the comments on this forum) will not have the patience, intelligence, or attention span to like this film. I saw the movie with a girl(sorry not misogyny) and she did not like it at all. She did not get the story line or like how complex and bending the plot was.She also thought the ending was stupid, probably because she had to think about it. If people are not force fed some action and blatant plot lines, or complete black and white character development. You can almost hear them during the movie saying. Is this a good guy or a bad guy. Sometimes it is hard to watch a though producing movie like this in a theater. Watching this movie at midnight in Downtown Seattle, I thought would be a awesome. But most people can not sit through an entire movie without getting up and pissing three times, you can really tell when the story line gets complex, and the actors are entrenched in heavy dialogue to guide you through this movie, then people start getting the most fidgety and squirmy. Seriously people, its like watching a documentary with 5 year old's. The Mtv movie generation has ruined any patience or attention span that people ever had. Also at the theater I was at some guy kept popping beer bottles and throwing his caps on the ground, followed by rolling his bottle down the theater floor at one point.
Really? I am all for bringing a beer in to a theater but be quiet and don't disturb anyone.
Other than that the movie was beautiful, a true masterpiece.
I dont know if this is a spoiler or what, but my Idea to the ending is that the true inception of the movie was Saito implanting the inception into cobb, from the very beginning. I dont know I have to watch it again

    • markeels

yeah, watch it again and tell me. I am not against the intention and the concept of the movie. I just felt the story is too hype and never touched the ground or heart. It is not about intelligence or patience. Don't put yourself higher than others, are you? It is not a bad movie, not at all, but doesn't live up to its ambition.

I saw inception yesterday… and i was truly amazed.. im ready to see it again already. i was thinking though that Joseph gordon levitt couldve been the star role and i wish they wouldve gone that route, he couldve used this push more than leo, but i understand why they did it… just sucks to see JGL in a background role when the guy is a star

  29. Colton

Brad, do you think Inception will win the best picture Oscar? I think that Nolan deserves a nomination for best director after being snubbed for The Dark Knight!

  30. faisal

amazing movie, all have to see this movie at least once,
fantastic special effects. 10/10 from me

  31. connor

This is for sure my favorite movie of the year so far. My favorite movie of the summer yet and it will stay that way. Nolan's best. Seen it twice and I wanna see it again.

  32. Beth

A cool, sci fi idea about people who can invade dreams for corporate fun and profit. CGI was amazing. Unfortunately, the dreams are BORING, consisting mostly of car chases and gunfights. And the movie was emotionally barren — apparently the actors were instructed that dreamers never smile. My DOG dreams with more imagination than that. I give this movie two stars at most.

  33. YourWrongI'mRight0-1

Not as scientifically accurate as Battlefield Earth nor as humorous as Ishtar but all & all… MASTERPIECE!!! Although I will say that I found Caine's performance in Jaws the Revenge to be much more moving.

  34. Mari S

I finally got my chance to see this last night. Amazing film that kept me awake half the night thinking about the story and how it all played out. I'm seeing it again tonight.

  35. Nolan is great, but… Inception's dreams as a premise don't quite add up: a poor man's Matrix? The movie is visually stunning in places but also convoluted and sometimes overly complex. I don't expect to see Inception Reloaded anytime soon.

  36. chris

I felt the attack on the snow fort played out like a bad James Bond movie, and the whole concept of the film, while clever, wasn't given a chance to unfold properly. How many times must we watch a fight with a gun getting kicked around? Too many cliches and overdone chase/fight scenes wrecked it for me.

  37. It is really a mind twisting film! Great!

  38. Rick

HEY WAKE UP!! This movie is a yawnfest. How easy it is to payola the critics and use Americans egos to convince theirselves they are now in the smarty pants club for having set thru this drible. "Hmm Pat Travers said it was intelligent, by jiminee me to, and Ill also try that new Mc MSG burger cause' someone on tv said to" I did enjoy when the cheerleaders took machine guns to the bad guys, oh wait that was when I drifted off, I was dreaming, Or was I?

  39. Mariushka

I do agree with you Brad, very very much! In my opinion Inception was the best movie that I've ever seen. I have seen it four times, and I'm ready too watch it again and again whenever it is possible. I just think that a movie like that it never going to be created again. It just happens once. I definitely love inception, in all of it!!! <3
