'Moneyball' and 'Boardwalk Empire' Season One Lead This Week's New DVD and Blu-ray Releases

Plus tons of new release dates including 'Chinatown' on Blu-ray

Moneyball
I've watched it twice and can safely say this is great movie and one I would say is worth the purchase. I haven't seen it on Blu-ray, but I would expect the rich blacks and lush greens look excellent in high definition, but above all else this is simply a great movie. You can read my review from the Toronto International Film Festival right here.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season
I am now five episodes into this series and I will say it's good, but not great. One thing I particularly take away from so many of the outdoor scenes is how much it looks like they are shooting on a set. Everything about some of these scenes just feels wrong and plastic. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to throw in disc three and see where things go from here and I'm particularly interested in watching the evolution of James 'Jimmy' Darmody (Michael Pitt) as I suspect there's a lot more to happen there, but I can't suggest it as something you should buy just yet.

Film Socialisme
I'm a little miffed I haven't yet seen Jean Luc Godard's latest film just yet being the fan of his work I am, but then again, I've always been a bigger fan of his earlier stuff more than his later. I've seen several of Godard's films and it would appear there is something of a cut-off line around 1965's Pierrot le Fou, which I enjoyed but didn't love, though I really need to return to it again.

Reviews of Film Socialisme also didn't tell me I needed to see it right away, though I'm hoping it makes NetFlix Instant where I'll give it a shot.

What's Your Number?
What's Your Number? on DVD Blu-ray today
This film is actually better than the 24% at RottenTomatoes, but don't go overboard and assume I'm suggesting you buy it. First off the R-rating adds a little something, plus I find Anna Faris quite entertaining, though occasionally overbearing. Give this a rent and if you want more of my opinion you can read my theatrical review right here.

Killer Elite
On the flipside of what I just said about What's Your Number?, Killer Elite deserves its 25% RottenTomatoes rating. This film is all over the place with impossible action, a convoluted story and an attempt to sell you on its supposedly "true" story that by the end you just want to leave.

Higher Ground
This film serves as Vera Farmiga's directorial debut and I've heard split opinions on it as I have not yet had a chance to see it. I have heard Vera's younger sister, Taissa Farmiga, is actually quite good in it, but that it gets a little too religious at times. Anyone see it and care to weigh in?

1911
Ugh, the film that would have made my worst of list had I been able to watch the whole thing. I described my experience right here if you're interested, but suffice to say, I watched 37 minutes and couldn't handle it any longer.

Did they really waited for Hop to come on DVD for almost a year? Wow! But it's during Easter so that makes sense :)

Brad, whatever you do DO NOT google "Boardwalk Empire" and especially DO NOT look up "Boardwalk Empire" on Youtube. "Boardwalk Empire" is a series with lots of twists and turns. A simple search result can ruin the series for you. Just warning you.

  • Nick

I want Chinatown on blu-ray and I want it now.

Oh my god, I'm so excited for the "Chinatown" Blu-Ray release. It's one of my favorites. That news basically made my day.

  • Mark

Felt the same way when I started watching "Boardwalk Empire." It gets better, and Season 2 is great. Stay with it.
