'Milk' and 'Happy-Go-Lucky' Win Big with New York Film Critics
New York prefers indies and political pieces
After yesterday's surprise with the Los Angeles Film Critics bestowing the title of Best Picture on WALL•E and naming The Dark Knight the runner-up I guess it would have been too much to expect the same from the New York Critics, but they have in turn gone a different route and awarded Happy-Go-Lucky a pair of high profile awards as well as giving Milk the three other top nods.
Winning Best Picture is Milk as well as sweeping the actor bids with Sean Penn winning for Best Actor and Josh Brolin for Best Supporting Actor. Happy-Go-Lucky takes Best Actress for Sally Hawkins' performance and also Best Director kudos for Mike Leigh. Penelope Cruz takes the final top-line prize winning for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a personal favorite of mine.

Stay tuned, tomorrow morning brings us the Golden Globe nominees as things are about to really heat up.

Penelope Cruz easily deserved Best Leading Actress for either one or both "Elegy" and "Vicky Christina Barcelona." In each respective movie she totally dominated the screen the moment she appeared on camera. Everyone else became irrelevant. The other female actors in Vicky Christina… looked absurdly juvenile in comparison to her. The two performances showed her tremendous range as an actor which is something those of us who watch Spanish movies were well aware of.
And lest I forget. How did Richard Jenkins not get the Best Actor award and Kristin Scott Thomas the Best Actress award since the latter wasn't given to Penelope Cruz?
Still no "Revolutionary Road"……
Maybe tomorrow, when the golden Globes nominations come out…..maybe

Best Picture: "Milk" won with 29 points. "Rachel Getting Married" had 25 points while both "Happy-Go-Lucky" and "Slumdog Millionaire" had 20 points.
Best Director: Mike Leigh ("Happy-Go-Lucky") won with 31 points. Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") had 30 points and David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") had 26 points.
Best Actor: Sean Penn ("Milk") won with 59 points. Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler") had 50 points and Clint Eastwood ("Gran Torino") had 17 points.

Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Christina Barcelona") won with 40 points. Viola Davis ("Doubt") had 31 points and both Rosemarie DeWitt & Debra Winger ("Rachel Getting Married") had 28 points.
Best Screenplay: Jenny Lumet ("Rachel Getting Married") won with 44 points. Mike Leigh ("Happy-Go-Lucky") had 38 points and Robert Seigel ("The Wrestler") had 19 points.

Best Animated Picture: "WALL-E" won with 17 points over "Waltz with Bashir" with 11 points.
Best Foreign Film: "4 Months, 3 Weeks, Two Days" won with 45 points. Two French films followed – "A Christmas Tale" had 34 points and "The Class" had 23 points.
Best Documentary: " Man on Wire" won with 45 points. "Waltz With Bashir" had 25 points and "Trouble The Water" had 22 points.
Best First Picture: "Frozen River" with 39 points. "Ballast" had 26 points and "Reprise" had 18 points.
