Midnight Screenings Earn 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' $16 Million
Best midnight run ever for a movie opening on a Wednesday
Just because it is a hot topic I don't feel bad going with a short post on this one as Variety has revealed Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen earned an estimated $16 million in midnight runs, second only to The Dark Knight. It's the best midnight run ever for a movie opening on a Wednesday.
Of course, the difference being The Dark Knight was opening on a Friday, but I think we can now expect big things from Transformers, as if we weren't already.
The Dark Knight went on to earn $67+ million on its opening day in 4,366 theaters. Transformers will take its estimated $16 million into 4,226 runs today after its roughly 3,000 runs last night.
Several of you have already made your predictions in our Transformers estimate article in which Laremy predicted a safe $43 million for Wednesday, a number that is now looking low as I would expect at least mid-50s. Thoughts?

I'm tellin ya. It can still get 70 mill today.
Well, I think I will up my prediction a bit, from $50 million to close to $60 million. I don't think word of mouth will take it all the way through the weekend, so I'm still standing with my $91 million prediction for the weekend, though a $100 million weekend is certainly a possibility.
@Terry:
yeah $70 million isnt out of the question
I'm saying it's official:
Wednesday: 58.7
Thursday: 42.7
@Terry: No. I'm sorry, but no.
I'll give it 57m give or take a million or so.
I still stand by my $39 million dollar prediction for today. I think it can only pull in $23 million more, because of work and school, and because all of the fanboys just flooded out to the midnight showing and probably won't come back for a second helping until friday.
With that number in the bank we could now know for sure that there's just no way Transformers 2 will gross less than 50 million today, which would settle the record for the highets grossing Wednesday ever beating the 44.2M of HP5.
A 180 million for the 5 day seems very likely.
@Bustray: That's just it Bustray, school's out.
That's great, but 70mil is still not happening folks. It'll make 42-50mil today and it'll get 65miil tops. 5-day of 180mil is likely. The midnight fanboy rush is done so it'll perform more closer to normal trends
If today was friday, then 70mil might be in play. But it's a wed
I hope it beats out The Dark Knight. That movie was ok but by far wasn't too great. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine were awesome. So was the guy who played Harvey Dent.
I don't think it's going to break TDK's record. None of them.
by the way, the last wednesday opening day-midnight screening record holder (talk about a VERY specific record, uh? lol) is Harry Potter 5. And it went to do 44 million in its first day, after making 12 million on the screenings. And 140 million on its first five days.
Obviously Transformers will make more than 44m, but I doubt it'll do much more than 50 million. And since the movie sucks big time and is probably one of the worst sequels since Batman & Robin, we can hope it'll drop like a bomb. So 150 million is definitely on sight, but not much more than that.
Just my guess.
I thought this movie could actually break 400 million at the US box-office.
Being that bad, I take that back. 350 million tops (which still is a great result and a big shot at being number 1 movie of the year)
10 biggest movies of the year
1. Transformers 2 Revenge of the fallen 562,000,000
2. Avatar 486,000,000
3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 350,000,000
4. Twilight New Moon 307,000,000
5. Up 284,000,000
6. Star Trek 257,000,000
7. The Hangover 236,000,000
8. G.I. Joe 219,000,000
9. Ice Age 3 210,000,000
10. Sherlock Holmes 203,000,000
**USAToday** early estimates @8p.m. eastern standard time
that Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen made $16.3 Million for the post-midnight showings. And there reporting that the early estimates at 8 p.m. has the Wednesday Opening record of $63.4 Million sooo i had it breaking Dark Knight's of $67 Million but i guess it can still break it's 5-day record.Also its noted that alot of the weekend tickets are already sold-out it's expecting an opening between Star Wars:Reveng of the Sith and Shrek the Third.
I'm pretty sure that this still could beat TDK's openning weekend record along with the 5 day record. I'm sure the movies terrible but it's what people want rigth now
@David:
I cant believe you are trying to rob Heath Ledger of an outstanding performance that has won him countless awards. And dont even try to say its because he died because his portrayal of the Joker was flawless
Saw the movie with a couple of friends and, well, we had lunch afterwards and we didn't even bother talking about it. I guess it wasn't special enough that we have forgotten about it the moment we left the auditorium. On a side note, though we went in to see it, we bought tickets to other movies (2 bought for UP, 2 for Hangover) going in. Our money means nothing in the grand scheme since Transformers 2 will still be huge, but at least it's comforting to know our money went somewhere else.
Let's do some proportions.
$18.5m/$67.2m = TDK's midnight gross/TDK's opening day gross
so…
$16m/$58.1m = Transformer's midnight gross/Transformers' opening day gross
But word of mouth could be bad, so it could end up with less. On BOM, I predicted $87.3 million for Friday-Sunday, with a $158 million gross for its first 5 days (looking at other summer Wednesday openings, the 3-day weekend normally made up around 55% of the 5-day total).
Early Wed estimates are now in folks, keep in mind though that these are early estimates. 55mil opening day Wed for Transformers 2 which includes the 16mil midnight gross. So, the movie made roughly 39mil during the regular theater hours. The chances of 200mil+ over 5 days just got even slimmer. A solid opening nonetheless. Looks like it will be headed for a 175mil 5-day tally.
top 5 grossers of the year:
1. Avatar=405mil
2.Transformers 2=355mil
3.Potter 6= 325
4.UP=305mil
5.Trek=260mil
@ TERRY
You put avatar way high! I don't even know if it could break top 5. Transformers will not reach 500 Mil. I'll bet it would be somewhere between Spiderman and Pirates.
Terry is on crack
Well, I was right that it would gross $39 million, but I was including midnight showings… and yeah, I totally forgot school got out for most people yesterday… ah, well, I'm taking comfort in the fact that it probably won't cross $200 million in it's 5-day.
Maybe I'm a tad bullish, But I still think that this will be the biggest of the year. Though hopefully Raichu is more accurate than I am.
Top 5 grossers? Hard to say when we're only halfway through the year…. but I think it may turn out something like this.
1. Avatar- $365 million
2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen- $330 million
3. 2012- $325 million
4. Up- $310 million
5. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince- $305 million
BoxOfficeGuru is reporting that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed an overwhelming 60.6 million wednesday, making it the second biggest opening day and the second biggest single day of all times.
I believe that on thursday it will gross about 28 million, then a 96 million friday-to-sunday, for a 185 million 5 day start.
Whoa, 60.6mil. that's good, now I think maybe 185-190mil 5-day tally. Not too shabby. I see around the mid to high 20mil for thurs, coming down from thea 44mil or so it' made during Wed's regular hours.
That 60.6 million is great, but it's just an estimate as we stand. As of now, all the other studios have release the actual wed gross of their films in theaters. I wonder what's the deal why the actual tally of Transformers 2 is not being released yet.
