Franck Khalfoun's Maniac starring Elijah Wood as the owner of a mannequin shop who develops a dangerous obsession with a young artist played at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but I didn't have a chance to see it. It has since played in Melbourne, Zurich and most recently Chicago. IFC Midnight holds domestic distribution rights to it and has not yet set up a release date, but it will be hitting French cinemas the day after Christmas and as a result Warner Bros. France has released a new red band trailer for the film for you to consider.

Just sifting through the trailer for the screen capture above I can tell you this is going to be one gruesome picture as that image above is hardly indicative of the blood shed in the trailer alone.

Here's the complete synopsis:

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.

Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day L.A., Maniac is a re-boot of William Lustig's cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made - an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiraling nightmare of a killer and his victims.

You can check out the red band trailer below and I also have another one which was released during the Cannes Festival right here if you're interested.

Hm... Curious to see if they do anything innovative with the POV... That's the only thing that has me even remotely interested.

  • Torryz

The original wasn't great and this doesn't look any better.

  • Adu

Wow, losing that Ring led to some serious withdrawal symptoms for our dear Frodo!

  • Dale

I wouldn't care to know anyone who would seriously want to see this movie.

    • ‘berto

And I've got no interest in knowing a close-minded judgemental prick, so it works out for both of us.

  • markymark

    Embracing his creepiness once again.

    • MovieFreek

      Even creepier, he looks good.

      • wozniak jersey

hmmm... wood as ditko's the creeper ?

  • Retrofrank

And not one word about the movie being a remake of an old underground classic by William Lustig.
    Bad inquiry.

    • Brad Brevet

Except for the third paragraph in the synopsis, but who's really wanting to do any reading right?

      • Sean Fast

        lol DO A GOOD RESEARCH!

  • LocalHero

Looks perfect for the Human Centipede crowd or anybody who is currently in a prison for the clinically insane.

  • Allison

Why is everyone against this movie? It looks like it will be great. It's also nice to see Elijah Wood able to do such diverse roles.

  • ‘berto

Looks like they may have successfully combined gore & psychological horror. I'll definitely be seeing this.

  • MovieFreek

Elijah Wood would never do that! ;p

  • Abby

How exactly does one go from Wilfred to The Hobbit to this?..
I dunno, BUT I LIKE IT.

  • shlaggenfreuker

Looks gay, Frodo sucks and has creepy eyes. Doesn't surprise me that some creepy pedophile who is obsessed with looking like a child would star in pulpy garbage like this. Also doesn't surprise me that a bunch of bonerless sexually repressed weirdos would eat this crap up. Looks stupid.
