It arrives in limited theaters on January 15 and was talked about plenty throughout 2009 as Fish Tank made the rounds starting at Cannes, hit up Edinburgh, moved to Telluride, then Toronto and on and on. It won the Jury Prize at Cannes and Best British Performance in Edinburgh for star Katie Jarvis and I have been anxious to give it a watch since watching the promo trailer back in August.

The film is a coming-of-age story centering on 15-year-old Mia (Jarvis) who is in a constant state of war with her family and the world around her, without any creative outlet for her considerable energies save a secret love of hip-hop dance. When she meets her party-girl mother's charming new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender), she is amazed to find he returns her attention, and believes he might help her start to make sense of her life. A clear-eyed, potent portrait of teenage sexuality and vulnerability.

Fassbender, as I am sure many of you know, starred in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds as Lt. Archie Hicox as well as Steve McQueen's Hunger, which hits Criterion DVD and Blu-ray on February 16. Fish Tank writer/director Andrea Arnold won the Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action) in 2003 for Wasp.

You can check out the trailer directly below and be on the look out for the film in limited theaters on January 15 as well as On Demand on January 13.

You can watch the trailer in high definition at Apple.

Personally, I am not as enthused… what struck you as so interesting Brad?

  2. Nate

I was wondering the same thing. It didn't strike me as anything special.

She's supposed to be 15? She looks like she's 30. Also, I agree with the other posters, this doesn't look like anything I'd be interested in.

I guess I'll have to retract the age comment though, as it appears she was born in 1991 making her only 18 (which means she was probably 16 or 17 when filming). I guess she just looks old.

The trailer doesn't really capture what the film's tone and atmosphere really is. It seems to me that they have made it look more melodramatic to attract the mainsteam American audiences.

I saw Fish Tank a few months ago and was absolutely stunned by what I saw. It's one of the most powerful and heart-breaking stories I've seen in a long time. Yet at the same time it's filled with such a heart and leaves you with a sense of hope.

After the final shot cut to black most of the theatre sat completely still for about 5 minutes and didn't move a muscle.

In many respects it's similar to Precious in it's tone. But what stood out for me about Fish Tank was that it avoided the cliches that let a film like Precious down in my opinion.

Jarvis is my actress of the year and Fassbender is absolutely incredible too.

    Top 5 of the year:
    A Prophet
    Up In The Air
    The Hurt Locker
    500 Days Of Summer
    Fish Tank

At the last scene she actually looks like 15.

Well, after watching this video I'll try to check this out for myself. Even though I agree with Brad only 75% of the time.

Wow, im wondering why Fassbender's film credits didnt include 300? anywho, this films looks amazing to me I love films like this, a movie that holds a mirror to your face and forces you to look at yourself OR possibly someone else in your life.

From the trailer it looks like a poor version of Precious..

I agree with Brad usually about 90% of the time, that is why I was puzzled about this. After hearing what Daniel had to say, I'm a little more interested in the film. I did not enjoy Precious very much at all, but hopefully this will be different enough.

  10. Following are excerpts from my blog post on fish tank
"Fish Tank captures those days when we used to give a damn about anything that is uninteresting to us; the days when arrogance was part of our persona and issues like low-self esteem and self-pity were nowhere near the horizon. We were king/queens of our world. All external things posed a threat. And look at nowadays; the threats have now been internalized. We ourselves are the one threatening ourselves. We are constantly fighting with our moods, impulses, desires. Whereas the teenage days was the time to act on our moods impulses and desires without caring a hoot for anything or anybody."
    ..
"Fish Tank, the title is supposed to symbolize the years when you are trapped in the confine of angst and frustrations. The fish inside surely don’t know that there is a huge ocean out there. But saying this would be looking down upon teenage years as just some clueless years. Sure, the world outside is way bigger and worse than what we imagine in our teenage years, but it also reflects the inherent human tendencies of rebelling for freedom, acting on impulses and desires, boosting the ego and finally loving someone like there is no tomorrow. "

I've also seen the movie and absolutely loved it. This is one of the worst trailers i've ever seen. Don't judge the film on this… go out of your way to see it.
