UPDATE: An official clip, including video, is in… CLICK HERE to get it.

I am almost positive Sweeney Todd is going to polarize critics and audiences alike. I just have this feeling that there is going to be one aspect of the film that people are going to love or hate.

Until now I have wondered how well the musical will be portrayed on the big screen considering we haven't heard or seen anything of Depp's singing abilities, and NO, I don't count the talking/singing style he gave us in the trailer, I took that to be more of a hint to folks saying, "Oh, and there is singing."

As Devin at CHUD points out, the audience reactions in the audio only clip embeded below sounds quite positive as Sweeney slices and dices mid-sing-song. The bootlegged audio is from a recent screening of 20 or so minutes of the film for only those important enough to bare witness.

As for the music itself, I am not a Broadway fella, in fact I am not sure if I have seen a play in my life, but I am not going to go as far as Devin did and say Depp's "voice lacks the power of Len Cariou, the guy who defined Sondheim's Sweeney Todd." I think he sounds damn good and I have no real idea about voice power…

You be the judge, here's the clip featuring five and a half minutes of "Johanna".

If you're going to comment as if you're some kind of expert, you should educate yourself. Listen to the original recording of Sweeney Todd. Listening to Len Cariou and hearing Johnny Depp is the difference between listening to a man and a boy. And Mr. Cariou was the same age as Johnny when he recorded it. Unfortunately, too many people have stars in their eyes when it comes to celebrities, and they have no standards by which to compare. Johnny Depp couldn't fill Len Cariou's jockstrap!

  2. Uhhhh, missbones… did you not read the article?

I specifically said, "As for the music itself, I am not a Broadway fella, in fact I am not sure if I have seen a play in my life…" and then said, "I have no real idea about voice power…"

Where did I claim to be an expert? As a matter of fact I pretty much say I have no idea what I am talking about and that I just thought it sounded good. Thanks for the comment though.

I really dislike Johnny Depp's newer works, but I have to disagree and say that he does incredibly well in this movie and I can't imagine who else they would have picked to play Sweeney. His vocal range is less powerful (and a bit higher) than that of Cariou's but because this was a film version Depp didn't need to pack as much power as somebody who had to fill an auditorium with their voice.
Also, Carter as Mrs. Lovett compared to Lansbury gives you a totally different feeling. She really prettied up the role…if that's possible for a lady who squishes cockroaches with her rolling-pin and cooks people in her meat pies. I don't know if I like Carter's more than Lansbury's but they bring two totally different feelings to the Mrs. Lovett character… Just like Depp Vs. Cariou.
