List of the 2010 Golden Globe Award Nominees
'Up In the Air' leads the way with six
The nominations are in for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards and the leader at the moment is Up In the Air with six nominations, followed by Nine with five and Inglourious Basterds and Avatar both earning four nominations each. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me personally is the absence of In the Loop in the Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) category as well as Peter Capaldi not getting a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nomination. It's a great film and this was really it's only chance and it has come up empty.
As far as nominated surprises go, Tobey Maguire getting a Best Actor (Drama) nom for Brothers is surprising, but at the same time it is well-deserved (even if I think Jake Gyllenhaal had the best performance in that flick). Coen brothers fans will be happy to see Michael Stuhlbarg getting a nomination for A Serious Man and I guess the one performance that doesn't really fit in the acting category is Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes. Sure, Downey is good in the flick and the main reason to see it, but it's a nomination to fill in the blanks more than it is a deserving one.
On the actress side of things Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria is the biggest "surprise" while Sandra Bullock for The Proposal and Julia Roberts for Duplicity are two nominations a lot like the Downey "fill-in-the-blank" nom. I would have liked to see Zoe Saldana get a nomination for Avatar and I'm a bit surprised Maggie Gyllenhaal wasn't nominated for Crazy Heart.
In the supporting categories there are really no major surprises outside of my disappointment Christian McKay was not nominated for Me and Orson Welles while Christopher Plummer was nominated for The Last Station. The two performances don't even compare making it a shame McKay missed out. I can't tell if the snub here means McKay's chances at an Oscar nom are dashed or improved… Currently I'm counting on the latter after a strong run with the critics.
No surprise in director as Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds) gets a boost and then in screenplay Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell get a notice for their District 9 script.
The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Ricky Gervais and be broadcase on Sunday, January 17 on NBC (5 to 8 pm PT, 8 to 11 pm ET) from The Beverly Hilton.

Inglourious Basterds —-> Yeah!!!!!
Avatar —-> Cameron deserve it.
I'm glad I can be the first to say so, but these awards have no merit whatsoever. The HFPA is a complete joke and should not be taken seriously as they are so completely bought off by studios that they will nominate just about anyone or anything.
Sure, the Oscars aren't perfect either but the Academy is far more legitimate an organization, and the Oscar itself still carries a large amount of prestige. Golden Globes are an excuse to get drunk for a night, and while yes, I will be watching because I enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the awards show, the Globes should not be taken seriously.
How could they snub Zooey Deschanel and Maya Rudolph?!? Such a travesty!! This was the place to reward them, but instead they went for Sandra Bullock ad Julia Roberts. Such a dissapointment.
glad for nine
why dont they have awards for cinematography and editing..when they can have it for screenplay and music…sad…happy for Basterds…but sad Moon didnt have any nomination…
Neither IN THE LOOP or Peter Capaldi were eligible for the Golden Globes, as IFC failed to fulfil the requirements for entry.
The Globes always have some pretty interesting choices (Tom Cruise last year).
The only real snubs I see are:
No nomination for Alfred Molina (An Education)
Julia Roberts over Zooey Deschanel.
I would have preferred Renner or Gyllenhaal over Maguire, but that doesn't really bother me.
Sandler or Rudd in the Comedy category would have been cool too, but I'm okay with their choices there.
Way to go Stuhlbarg!
Really glad to see the nominations for Inglourious Basterds, best film of the year out of the ones I've seen so far (haven't seen The Hurt Locker or Avatar yet).
@Cory:
I agree, Inglourious Basterds is the best film so far (I haven't seen Avatar yet, and I have to wait for it until January 1st), but I think the big competition will be between this 2 films. Nice surprise to see Robert Downey Jr. again nominated, his Sherlock must be really cool.
having 4 Golden Globe nominations certainly wont hurt AVATARs box office this weekend
What happened to Slumdog?
I'm actually really glad to see Tobey Maguire nominated. I've gotta admit I wasn't expecting it, but I thought he was really terrific in Brothers. I was expecting Jeremy Renner to be nominated instead, but hey, he's still got a shot at the Oscar, SAG and BAFTA.
I could not even finish watching Duplicity and God, how dare they nominate Julia Roberts for sheer mediocrity is out of my mind, are they crazy, are they insane? And TWO noms for Sandra Bullock, WHY? And yes, Meryl is MY EVERLASTING NUMBER ONE, but it's not fair to compete against yourself… I mean, it's so totally obvious that she's gonna win for Julie and Julia, I think almost everyone knows that; the best comedy actress list should have been much better, I mean, even Katharine Heigl was better in "The Ugly Truth" than annoying-always-feels-the-same Julia Roberts.
I'm happy for Emily Blunt tough, she deserves recognition for her small movie now, because I know she won't be Oscar nominated for it.
Cheers!
@Kevin: The Jeremy Renner snub was one of the first things I noticed, although that sucks, I have a feeling that he's gonna be in the Oscar list.
GG have a few things perfect though. Look at the Supporting Actress list, guys. Can you ask for anything better? But then I have a feeling the Academy will screw that up.
And John Krasinski looks so hot announcing the noms.
Minus the Jeremy Renner snub I'm ok with this list.
I'm really happy for Sandra Bullock but Julia Roberts over Zooey Deschanel, that's just complete and utter bull, where else is she gonna get rewarded. It's obvious that Streep will get it for Julie and Julia anyways but even nominating Roberts is S***.
It should have been Deschanel and not Roberts not to sure about Rudolph, Maybe ? a SAG or BAFTa ?!
I want Bullock to get Best Actress – Drama but i'll probably end up going to Mulligan.
KNOWS Streeep will get it for Julie and Julia!
They should have nom Jude Law for Sherlock Holmes.
Happy for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the (500) Days of Summer nominations, District 9, Sandra Bullock, Tobey Maguire and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (not as good as Up or Coraline, but damn funny). Middle finger to the Julia Roberts nomination. A WTF? to the two Meryl Streep nominations in the same category.
Very excited about the Best Picture-Drama category, and the Oscar chances for Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Inglourious.
I guess one of the x-factors was whether or not Up in the Air would be put into Drama or Comedy/Musical. Both of Reitman's previous films, Juno and Thank You for Smoking, had elements of drama but ended up in comedy. I'm fine with it getting a bunch of noms in any category, though, cause I've heard such great things. I'm just disappointed because I really wanted Renner to get a nom for Hurt Locker. I'll be seeing Brothers in this next week to see if I think Maguire did well enough for be to be okay with it.
I'm excited about Emily Blunt's nom, as I am a big fan. As most people are, I'm disappointed Julia Roberts got nominated over Zooey Deschanel (or just about anyone else). I got some enjoyment out of Duplicity, but it was completely Clive Owen, and maybe some Giamatti and Wilkinson.
Also, props to District 9! Should be a fun ceremony this year with Ricky Gervais hosting.
It's ridiculous to nominate J. Roberts. And I'm sad there's not much love for Moon and District 9. Both of those are in my top 10 of 2009.
At a second look, I'm also excited about the best actor musical com category, because it looks like Levitt could get the best actor trophy :)
BTW, Christian McCay just got a San Francisco Film Critics Circle Award for his performance.
@Nick: Yup, I have been keeping track of all of them right here.
The best picture category looks pretty interesting.
Only disappointment is that Moon has not got any nominations…it seems that Sci-Fi movies never get nominated, but Rockwell at least deserves a best actor nom.
The Hangover should win best picture Comedy/Musical
goddamm where are the noms for star trek ? also jeremy renner deserves to be on that list.
@Colin:
as much as id like to see that, i dont like JGL's chances, you see daniel day lewis, and matt damon are both nominated in the same category, i dont know why downey jr is on the list, sherlock holmes is not even out in the states yet.
julia roberts and sandra bullock???????
ARE YOU SERIOUS?????
(the proposal i meen, not the blind side)
Let's talk about "The Princess and the Frog". I have not seen it, no one here seems to like it, but it gets nominated here, and did anyone notice is was #1 movie in 2009 in Time magazine, (Up was #2 and Fox #3). Just saying, the animated field might be a tougher field to predict come Oscar time then you might think.
Haha, hilarious. Oh, Golden Globes.
2008 was the only year in recent memory when they Weren't ridiculous.
The Renner snub is somewhat expected, since foreign critics supposedly don't like The Hurt Locker as much as American critics. Don't know if that's true, just what I've read from general comments.
@ddurden33: I don't know, Day-Lewis has actually been some of the complaints about Nine, which hasn't been getting great reviews, and I feel that Levitt's performance was a little stronger than Damons was. Not only that but the Informant seems to have pretty much dropped off of everyones radar for major consideration this season.
I'm really curious as to how Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs got the nomination instead of Ponyo.
When is michael mann going to get some respect ….
sandra bullock best actress wtf , this is all politics the award season doesn't mean anything you pay for your award , I am not fortunate enough to have seen all the movies but Public Enemies is a masterpiece !!!!!!
Best Drama – I'm happy with every one of them. I can't choose which should win, but if I had to, I'd choose Avatar.
Best Comedy – The Hangover. All other nominees are crap (haven't seen 500 Days).
Best Drama Actor – Colin Firth (A Single Man)
Best Drama Actress – Gabby Sidibe (Precious)
Best Comedy Actor – Matt Damon (The Informant!)
Best Comedy Actress – I don't give a fuck. All of these nominations are terrible. Except for Streep, but she'll win awards and nominations just for being Meryl Streep).
Best Supporting Actor – Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)
Best Supporting Actress – Mo'Nique/Anna Kendrick (Precious/Up in the Air)
Best Director – Katherine Bigelow (The Hurt Locker)
Best Screenplay – District 9
Best Original Song – Crazy Heart
Best Original Score – Avatar
Best Animated Film – Fantastic Mr. Fox (if Ponyo was nominated, I'd be rooting for that)
Best Foreign Film – The White Ribbon
And I don't give a shit about the TV shows.
I'm really glad that Avatar and Inglourious Basterds are nominated! Unfortunately, so are the pretentious and overrated Hurt Locker and Precious. I hope Avatar wins! It's awesome to see Robert Downey Jr. get nominated, and I'm really looking forward to Sherlock Holmes! But since when was that a comedy? I hated Duplicity and I'm really shocked to see Julia Roberts get a nomination for that dreadful movie. And the Proposal? Are you kidding me? I'm also sad that The Princess and the Frog (which I haven't seen, so it might be good) took 9's place in Best Animated, and I am really angry that Harry Potter and Star Trek didn't get any nominations.
Oh man, I thought these nominees were awful. Tobey Maguire over Jeremy Renner? What the hell?
…and again…
@john: i couldnt agree more with the sandra bullock piece. WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TO???????? but im sorry to say i was beyond excited for public enemies, but i was a bit disapointed when i finally saw it. i felt like it could have been cut down at least a half an hour, but that might have had more to do with the fact that the theatre i was in had old wooden chairs.. however depp was very believable, and hats off to bale to – some great performances
Can someone explain the Julia Roberts nod for Duplicity? Over Zooey Deschanel? You gotta be kidding me.
@Brad Brevet: man whats your thought on jeremy renner not being nominated…man…he deserves a nomination..
BEST PICTURE (DRAMA) – The Hurt Locker
BEST PICTURE (COMEDY/MUSICAL) – Nine
BEST ACTOR (DRAMA) – Colin Firth, A Single Man
BEST ACTRESS (DRAMA) – Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
BEST ACTOR (COMEDY/MUSICAL) – Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
BEST ACTRESS (COMEDY/MUSICAL) – Meryl Streep?
SUPPORTING ACTOR – Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Mo'Nique, Precious
DIRECTOR – Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
ANIMATED FILM – Up
SCREENPLAY – Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker
FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM – The White Ribbon
@americanrequiem: It also helps Nine's box office performance
um how about less talking about spelling and more talking about movies??
@Brad: What's a poor nerd to do. I absolutely loved Inglorious Basterds (possibly Tarantino's finest since Pulp Fiction) and as for Avatar….there's not enough room for me to type everything I love about that film – ok, here's my one word response to Cameron's latest: phenomenal; so, who do I want to win the globe for Best Director and Best Picture – Drama? I don't know.
I guess I'll root for Avatar to win Best Picture at the Globes with Tarantino winning Best director…then, at the Oscars, I'll root for Inglorious Basterds to win Best Picture and for Avatar to win:
Best Director, James Cameron
Best Visual Effects
Best Cinematography
Best Sound Effects
Best Sound Effects Editing
