I must say that I'm very happy that James Franco got a nod this year for at least one of his performances. His turn as Saul Silver had me in stitches. I had no idea he was funny. I'm also very happy for Kate Winslet and I want to know WHY she doesn't already have an Oscar. Yay Meryl! Tom Cruise, wtf? I mean, I enjoyed the performance, but it wasn't amazing or anything. Any person in a fat suit could have probably achieved the same effect.

It's really sad that Cate Blanchett was left out of the Best Actress, Drama category. I don't think many critics will disagree that Blanchett gave a better performance than Jolie. Jolie was good in her movie and did get a Broadcast Film Crtitics nomination, along with Blanchett; however I think the SAG and Oscar nod will go to Blanchett as well.

…. i dont kno what was so good about In Bruges … but i thought it was boring to tell you the truth. The fact that Wall-e felt like it wasnt geared towards kids at all and is basically a green peace movie is probably going to trump movies like kung-fu panda and bolt which are movies more sutable towards younger audiences. Thats just my opinion

I loved Tom Cruise's performance in Tropic Thunder just as much as anyone, but having him nominated over Brolin and Shannon is a joke. Maybe Hollywood feels bad for giving him so much crap over the whole Scientology thing and they want to make up for it.

@JerzeyJon: The reasoning is quite simple. Others believe it was a better film over a few of the nominees, just as you disagree. With the critical support from the masses, I find it hard to believe that you can't understand why so many people are upset over such a snub. Although I love The Dark Knight, I'm afraid Revolutionary Road may be taking the 5th spot for Best Picture. Nolan still has a shot at Best Director, but with Mendes getting a Globe nomination, we'll have to wait it out and see. If The Dark Knight is absent from the SAG awards, it's chances will really be in question. All of the categories stayed at five this year. Why not throw in Milk as a 6th choice? This is not the time to be punctual, HFPA.

Tom Cruise beating out both Josh Brolin and Michael Shannon for best supporting actor is insane.

Another than that, the nominations were pretty good.

I don't understand why people find it so difficult to believe that TDK wasn't nominated for best picture. There's a simple explanation, It wasn't nominated because the rest were better.

Tom Cruise is nominated for supporting, which is neither comedy nor drama, they only have one category for supporting (which is stupid in my opinion but w/e).

I find it interesting that they gave that much love to Cruise/Downey but couldn't muster up a best actor nod for ben stiller or a best picture – musical/comedy nod.

TDK getting stiffed makes me very angry, and Milk is my most anticipated film to see for the rest of the year so that getting stiffed also angers me.

Then again, of the 5 nominees for drama best picture, I've only seen Benjamin Button, and will be seeing Slumdog Millionaire tonight, and the rest are a few weeks off yet, so maybe they'll end up being great. But better than TDK? I doubt it.

Also, In Bruges is my 2nd fav film of the year so far, so it rocks that it got 3 nominations. When I saw Ralph Fiennes in the supporting category i was really hoping it was for In Bruges.

The only problem I have is seeing Frost/Nixon for best picture, I would have rather seen TDK. Milk for me, stood out more for its performances rather than being a great movie. Tom Cruise is nominated in musical/comedy category, so I can forgive that.

Moreover, I knew TDK would face stiff competition come awards season, so it's no surprise if it misses out on certain categories. The only category it has a sure shot at is Supporting actor for Ledger.

I am extremely happy that In Bruges got some attention.

I hope Button is the major winner come Golden Globes and Oscar time!

I think the greatest thing ever would be for Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to both take home Best Actor and Best Actress since that's how it should've been in 98' when Titanic was robbed of those awards. I also hope that Heath Ledgar gets that final ultimate recognition by getting only the second post-humous Oscar ever.

@Dt Shindler: It's just my gut feeling and as you say, it's holding at five and will never go any higher. Frost/Nixon is knocking at the door and I think it really is a six film race for best picture right now with The Dark Knight as something of a sentimental pick in that I can see the Academy giving it a go... We still have over a month until Oscar noms though so time will tell.

Okay, even though I don't live in Hollywood and I'm not privy to what is called "the buzz" on a film, I have to say that it seems odd that "The Dark Knight" continues to hold at 5 place in your contenders list (pictures) without having garnared a golden globe nomination or a critics award. I know it's the year's big money-maker, but…was "Titanic" similarly ignored? (Can't recall). To be honest, after watching it again on DVD, while I think it's a terrific movie, it still felt 10-15 minutes too long (anytime I get antsy while watching a DVD, I know it's too long — and for perspective, I enjoy watching old movies like "Dr. Zhivago," etc., and _don't_ find myself wanting to hit fastforward in any of the scenes).

So what's the scoop? Why is "The Dark Knight" still a contender?
