Comments on: Leona Lewis Will Sing 'Avatar' Theme Song…

Considering how ridicoulously ovverrated Celine Dion's music is and yet popped out an excellent song like "My Heart Will Go On", I think Leona Lewis can make a really good song for a James Cameron movie.

I call it "Celine Dion's music" because she has a lot of talent but chooses to sing average. Same with Leona Lewis. For these movies though, you must try harder than normal for people to truly remember how good the music was for a movie.
People can make fun of Transformers 2 and/or Linkin Park all they want but "New Divide" made an excellent soundtrack song for use in the entire movie. Perhaps the best music since Titanic.

It must sound wierd to use Celine Dion, Leona Lewis, and Linkin Park and compare them..

@Steve Mott @Brad Brevet : Just to clarify: no, I'm not keen on the thought of another My Heart Will Go On (which I didn't like at all, and can say that having listened to it lots of times) :-) I quite like Leona Lewis and I *love* James Horner music.

The song itself may well be a masterpiece, which is why I've made no comment on the quality of it in the article you quote. Immediately after the quoted segment, I said:

"I’ve nothing against Leona Lewis, but surely it can’t just be our Celine Dion alarm bells that are clanging with some ferocity? Granted, this is likely to be the tune that’s warbled over the end credits, and granted, it might be great. But we don’t remember Aliens or Terminator 2 having a song attached to them, and they’re the style of films that we hope that Cameron is coming closer to with Avatar."

I stand by that, too. I was hoping that Avatar (a film I've written generally positive things about) would go into more old-school James Cameron territory, and this is arguably a clue that that's not where he's heading. But that's not hating everything, surely?

Whether you like Leona or not, she is pretty damn popular especially here in the uk so getting her to do the song will raise more awareness of the film and therefore bring in the big bucks for Cameron. Good move I think and if it sucks, who cares? It's just a song and will have no impact on the film whatsoever.

…is a good thing. Usually when somebody says "that's my shit," they mean that they like it.

The soundtrack site – http://www.avatarscore.com – has a clip of Horner's score. Not too thrilled with it, but you can't really come to a conclusion of the score for a three-hour movie based on one clip. As for Leona Lewis, I'm not a fan of hers but this is far from the only time Horner's collaborated with Big Name Recording Artists (Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Charlotte Church, Steve Winwood, John Cougar Mellencamp…). It might be decent – I've always liked Horner/Dion's collaboration for "Bicentennial Man" – but then again, maybe not.

People are sad. Really sad.

worst case scenario: the music sucks and you won't ever need to hear it again (since you can skip credits if you want if you ever decide to see the movie more than once)
best case scenario: the music is good, you'll love it, it'll make you feel happy, life's worth living and you'll sing it to the love of your life and his/her balcony before proposing and he/she will say yes and you'll be forever happy and never complain about anything EVER again (and all of that because of the song, obviously)

So? Why the hate?
I don't get people. They're stupid. Really stupid.

It might just be that people really don't like Leona Lewis.

I recently found out that Ms. Lewis will be singing the theme song to "Final Fantasy XIII", probably one of the biggest videogames of next year. Fans & gamers hate the song with a passion. They've never really had anything bad to say about theme songs before (most of the themes for previous games were over-the-top ballads as well).

Then again, this could just be fan boys being fan boys.
