Another thing to note is that according to it's official website The Hunger Games is rated PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images- all involving teens.
It's sad that Perks got the R. I can't say that I'm surprised though with the state of MPAA as it is. It's a wonderful young adult novel and if they did it right, it should be a wonderful movie for young adults. The fact that it got an R though only shows how far removed from reality the MPAA is. They regularly give PG-13 ratings to movies that show people blowing each other up and killing each other senselessly (Taken, The Dark Knight, The Bond Franchise), and R ratings to movies that show people acting like real human beings (Once, The King's Speech, Win Win). The MPAA should be ashamed of themselves.
As a huge fan of the "Perks of Being a Wallflower" novel, I can't see it being rated PG-13. Some of the edgy material can be removed, but some of it is extremely important to the story.
I can't help but think that the R rating for The Deep Blue Sea is a little fishy . Considering that this report from the parents BBFC site ( http://www.pbbfc.co.uk/filmDetail.asp?filmID=2121 ) makes it sound like it shouldn't have anything more than a PG-13 over here. I'm going to guess it's kind of like Massy Tadjedin's Last Night which got a 12 over in Great Britain but an R over here. That movie could have been PG-13, even with the five f- words and the topless art photo hanging in the background at some guys apartment, it wasn't a movie that's going to corrupt anybody.
