Well, this isn't good news for Funny People. I was thinking maybe it could gross in the mid-thirty millions, but it looks like because of that R-rating just the late-twentys.

  2. Jay Beezy

Did you honestly expect a Judd Apatow-directed feature to be rated anything lower than R?

And if you're talking total gross in late twenty millions, you need to put yourself in check. It has a lot of things going for it and buzz is outstanding.

  3. Bustray

Meh, you're probably right about the R-rated thing. But Judd Apatow has produced a couple movies with a PG-13 rating. And also, let me remind you that Knocked Up, which had a ton of buzz going for it, only grossed $30 million on the opening weekend, and The 40-Year Old Virgin only grossed $21 million. So I'm predicting around $28 million for Funny People.

  4. Jay Beezy

Okay so not total gross. But Knocked Up was good enough to have legs and ended up grossing a little more domestically than Talladega Nights, which opened to just under 50 million. Knocked Up also opened one weekend after a mega PG-13 action blockbuster that was guaranteed to have its second number one weekend. Here, Funny People opens more than two weeks after Harry Potter, which does not look capable of pulling a Dark Knight, so there's definite potential to open higher than Knocked Up. In addition, the only other movie that's opening the same weekend as Funny People is a cheesy family sci-fi film with no stars and no buzz.

  5. Bustray

Oh, I'm definitely agreeing you that it will make more than $28 million. That film will have legs. I'm predicting it will end up with around $100 million domestically, maybe around $155 million worldwide, because Apatow's movies don't usually have a lot of box office power overseas.

  6. Jay Beezy

You don't think it'll make more than 40-Year-Old Virgin?

I'm gonna go around 130 million.

    My thoughts:

    1) Funny People's R seems kind of tame. I'm a little worried about the lack of "pervasive" or "graphic" in the description. The rating for Bruno is basically what I expected Funny People to get as well. I still really look forward to both films, though.

    2) Green Day? That's pretty random. I don't recall any of their stuff ever having MPAA ratings before.

    3) Whip It? What is that? Sounds retarded, based on the name alone.

Notice how the Funny People rating reason is phrased: "language and crude sexual humor throughout, and some sexuality". Notice the comma after throughout. That would mean that it's language throughout and crude sexual humor throughout. Sometime rating reasons are contradictory. Knocked Up had just the regular "language" tag and it had over a hundred uses of the f-bomb. I Love You, Man had the "pervasive language" tag yet there were only just above fifty uses of the f-bomb.

  9. bruno looks freakin hilarious and i think funny people will be amazing i even heard that adam sandler might get an oscar nod for it but i'm not surprised either one of them are rated r i mean have you seen the trailer for bruno when i saw i immediatley knew it was gonna be r but i heard it was almost nc-17 and sacha baren cohen AKA borat AKA bruno had to fight to make it r
