'Land of the Lost' vs. 'The Hangover'… Which One You Got?
Is it really too close to call?
Steven Zeitchik at The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog had an interesting post that caught my eye merely for the first sentence, which says:
Anyone who says they know what's going to win the box-office this weekend is lying, one studio staffer said to us this week.
Zeitchik ponders the statement pointing to some things to consider. For one, it's rather surprising to think Universal's $100 million Land of the Lost isn't a sure-fire bet over the approximately $35 million budgeted The Hangover, but even more interesting is Zeitchik's statement saying Lost will attract the parent-and-kid audience while Hangover is targeting young males. Anyone that has already seen Land of the Lost knows it may have just as many sex jokes as The Hangover, Lost just keeps it to innuendos while Hangover whips it out in the elevator. I would be curious to see how the parent-and-kid audiences react to Lost for this reason among many others.
Zeitchik's numbers say tracking on the two films is too close to call, but early reviews are certainly favoring Hangover at the moment if that means much of anything, which we all know it really doesn't.
As for me, I'm keeping my mouth shut on Land of the Lost until later tonight, but I have already leaked opinion on The Hangover, which you can get here if you missed it.
Of course, I think it is also a mistake to overlook a little film called Up from a juggernaut of a company called Pixar. You may have heard of them? Well, considering Land of the Lost and The Hangover are both comedies and are in a dead heat when it comes to tracking, doesn't that open up the possibility for the animated critical and audience favorite to once again rise to the top?
Laremy will be here later today with his weekly box-office predictions, but I just wanted to get my two cents in before he takes the stage.

I am pro-Hangover. Land of the Lost looks like trash.
because i like out of this world adventure movies i am more excited about this one,but most of my friends prefer the hangover,\…i think 35 mill for LOTL and 25 mill for TH,Up will still do good bussiness..
I am a 19 year old male and I am excited about both. The Hangover looks hilarious, but with Will Ferrell and Danny McBride teaming up, that could be equally funny. But with the Hangover receiveing the "R" rating, the jokes will be much funnier.
I have stopped trying to figure out which person/movie America will choose ever since Sanjaya and American Idol. I think America will choose LOTL, but I am at a stand-still. I kind of want both movies to receive exactly the same amount of money, but that will never happen.
I will see "The Hangover". I think that "Land of the Lost" will win the box office.
I'm pretty sure Up will be #1 again, but out of those two I think Lost will win with about $35M, while The Hangover likely won't make more than $25M.
Hangover hands down. Yes, Ferrell & McBride will be funny together- just like they are when they team up for East Bound & Down…but as much as I loved his older stuff, Ferrell's schtick is getting tired and repettitive. Hangover looks hilarious, promising and new – both in concept and in letting some new faces share the spotlight.
Lots of movies that are trash do well at the box office, but I don't think that the Will Ferrell + Dinosaurs factor is enough to make up for the fact that 'Land of the Lost' is obviously trash, even just be watching the commercials. I'm thinking Hangover.
Well, I was going to see neither, but now that "The Hangover" is getting such good advance reviews, I'm planning on seeing it Friday night.
I was never planning on seeing "Land of the Lost," and now I never will. I hate Will Ferrell's movie roles anyway. So that puts "The Hangover" one more ticket ahead of "Land of the Lost."
@Nick:
Well it sure is anice suprise that a cute, PG rated, Pixar animation and a broad apeall, PG-13 adventure comedy got beat out by a rowdy, ranchy, R rated, stag night comedy.
The Hangover was always going to win because of this:
Up , Land of the Lost and Night at the Museum 2 would split the "parent and kid audience" and with no R-Rated rowdy summer comedy released prior to The Hangover, "young males and their dragged girlfriends" went to see The Hangover.
