Kevin Smith Preps to 'Hit Somebody' Next
Where does he go from here?
Kevin Smith is always up for promoting his goods and with a new book out and post-production on A Couple of Dicks underway his latest discussion was with the folks at The Huffington Post. Peppered within scores of curse words and self-loathing Smith shared some details on his planned hockey-based feature Hit Somebody.
Hit Somebody is based on a Warren Zevon song about a hockey enforcer. As HuffPo's Katla McGlynn puts it, "the song adaptation tells the story of a guy who wants more than anything to be in the NHL, but is only good at one thing: beating people up on the ice." What may sound like the first ten minutes of Happy Gilmore is actually, according to Smith, something akin to a Forrest Gump of sports movies, but not as ambitious.
The film is expected to be a more serious feature than the Jay and Silent Bob style Smith fans have grown so fond of, describing the the gist of the film being the main character's dream of being in the NHL only to find he's not playing the role he wants to.
HuffPo and Smith himself are quick to point out the parallels behind the Hit Somebody premise and his own career as A Couple of Dicks will be Smith's first film he's directed that he didn't write. Following up the unfortunate box-office return of Zack and Miri Make a Porno it will be interesting to see if Smith's decision to go the studio route will pay off. As a fan of his earlier work I hope so, but I just get the feeling he will never be able to duplicate the films he made from Clerks up to and including Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which means Smith hasn't really impressed me since 2001, with three films in a row that were just plain lackluster.
"The great irony is that he's out there doing the thing he's always dreamed about and loves but not in the way he thought he'd be doing it," Smith told McGlynn of the main character in Hit Somebody. "It's definitely right up my alley and that's where my head is right now. I think its gonna be kick-ass because when I hear that song… Ah, it reminds me of me."

what is so bad about Jersey Girl? even if you hate Ben Affleck it's still a touching movie about single fatherhood. How many earnest stories are out there about that subject that have heart. I'm a guy that rembers the last time i cried 10 years ago, but everytime i watch that movie at the end when george carlin tell's his son he just doesn't wanna be alone i well up. so i f a movie is powerful enough to envouk that suppressed male emotion out of me and i keep going back to do it to myself i have to ask what is so bad about it?
and please don't say it was because of Lopez and Affleck's relationship, that has nothing to do with the story at hand.
did you like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? I thought it was good for a couple of laughs, but was a different style of comedy, and ended up being full of unfunny 'inside jokes' it seemed
