A 'Karate Kid' Remake?
It wouldn't kill us, but is it necessary?
I think it is now official that studios are scrambling to make anything they can get their hands on in this pre-strike world. The latest rumor for a remake comes from IGN in which they say a reliable source has told them Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith's Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Along with the idea of a remake they also report that Smith's 9-year-old son Jaden is attached to star in the feature.
I am sure there could be far worse ideas than to remake The Karate Kid, but I have to wonder how they would change it to make it a satisfying remake. Of course using a 9-year-old instead of a 23-year-old, which is how old Ralph Macchio was when he played Daniel LaRusso in 1984 is a rather drastic change, but I also think it completely changes the target demographic and will ultimately be far less appealing to the audience that watched and loved the original.
IGN does say they weren't able to confirm the rumor with Weintraub's office or Smith's reps but they consider the rumor reliable, but to be safe let's stick to calling this one a rumor.
Jaden starred in The Pursuit of Happyness with his father in 2006.
