I completely understand that Jarmusch is a very specific taste, but I think that there is still hope for you to like Stranger Than Paradise. It's not quite like Coffee & Cigarettes or Broken Flowers (to be honest, though, I haven't seen either of those two yet). It's just a very honest, hilariously deadpan movie. I swear that the characters of Willie and Eva could be my cousin and I, and their aunt Lottie our aunt Rosie.

Another Jarmusch movie worth checking out, especially with the possibility of a renewed interest in Westerns is Dead Man, with Johnny Depp. I will warn you, though, Brad. I could hardly sit through half an hour of it the first time I got it from Netflix. My friend who told me about it made me try again, and now it's in my top ten.

Another director worth looking into might be Jean-Pierre Melville. The influence his movies, especially Le Samourai (my favorite of his) and Le Cercle Rouge can be seen in a lot of recent crime movies (I'm sure that Collateral is and Americanized Le Samourai),

Just added it to the queue, but based on Coffee and Cigarettes and Broken Flowers I can tell you I am not a juge fan of Jarmusch, but recommendations are always welcomed and they will get watched sooner or later. I am going to make it easier to recommend more soon, so stay tuned, but if you have any others you think should be talked about never hesitate to mention 'em.

Since your taking recommendations, Brad, can I recommend Stranger Than Paradise? It's not only important because it made a name out of Jim Jarmusch, but it was also the first movie that played at Sundance to get a real distribution. It changed the face of independent film. And it's really good.

Maybe one day I can sneak a review of my own on here. I'm not an excellent reviewer, I'll get better, but I'll leave it for now. Thank you for adding it to the list and I look forward to the post! :)

You know, I will add it to the list, and pretty soon there is going to be an entire section for this where my Netflix queue will be visible and an entire forum section dedicated to talking about films just like this. American Beauty is a good one to add though. I haven't seen it since it first came out and I remember not entirely enjoying it as much as everyone else, but it was so long ago I can't even comment. I will be sure to add it to the list though!

Brad -- Might I suggest "American Beauty" for the next -- JUST WATCHED scenario? It's time people get a wake up call that the film isn't all that "beat"iful.

I'm going to start things off by saying that I in no way consider Citizen Kane to be the best movie of all time, or even the year that it came out (that would be The Maltese Falcon). I. I do respect the film for it's innovation, but I would also like to point out that the one-take that Orson Welles used to start off A Touch of Evil is better than anything that Kane has to offer. As for Welles' performance, I honestly think that his performance as Harry Lime, brief as it may be, is his real best. I do, however, think that it is a movie that should be seen by anyone who has even the most fleeting interest in film at least once. There's no way that anyone can say that it's anything short of amazing.

I would like to share what my Film teacher told me about the booing at the Oscars, though. Citizen Kane was booed, because Orson Welles was a first time writer/director, and he got his start in radio. The cast was made up of his radio actor friends, so no "Hollywood" actors were used. We all know that Hollywood is full of cliques, so the booing was really due to the fact that it was an outsider movie. If anything, they felt threatened.

The video with the Fight Club music was cool.

Trust me. Watch it again. Get lost in it. See it in a theater. Watch how it envelopes an audience with in its mysterious and deeply seductive black and white bearhug of a grip. Listen to Welles booming voice come crashing out all around you. This movie builds and resonates like few others. It is the picture that changed everything, all that came after having to be judged by what was delivered upon its massive shoulders. It is a movie whose reputation continues to build and expand, whose legend will never die and only grow more massive.

Other great American films have certainly come along since then and maybe dislodged this masterpiece from the top spot, "The Godfather" (preferably part two, in my humble opinion) probably chief amongst them, but few motion pictures will ever be near as important to the world of cinema as an art form then this one. "Citizen Kane" is a film I revel in, could never grow tired of and could probably watch until the very fabric of the world was ripped asunder into tiny little pieces. For me, it is a picture every person who claims to love, work or talk about cinema should go back to every so often to be reminded of what true greatness is, and every chance to see it should be treated as a gift worthy of ecstatic celebration.
