Just One More Way to Watch a Movie On a Tiny Screen

Who the hell watches movies on those small screens?

Video Business is reporting that Blockbuster is unveiling some new download feature in two of their stores soon before releasing the service nationwide.

There will be in-store kiosks that stand about eight feet high at which a consumer will insert a portable media player and then download their selected movie(s) directly to the player's hard drive or solid-state memory device. The transfer is expected to take about two minutes, but could soon be down to 30 seconds in second generation models.

How useful will this be? Well, not to useful if you own an iPod, iPhone or any other portable media device outside of the Archos Generation 4 portable media player, which Blockbuster will begin selling in-store and online. Another "benefit" is that the selection will be limited.

Outside of this being stupid based on its limitations I can't help but wonder who is out there actually watching movies and TV shows on their cell phones and iPods, or, in this case, their Archos Generation 4s.

Do any of you out there actually do this? The Archos 704 WiFi has a 7" screen. How can that possibly be enjoyable? Is it too much to ask to read a book when a TV is not around?

yeah,I dont get it… I certainly wouldnt bust one of these things out on a bus or subway, and if I were to go on a long trip, on a train or plane, Id much rather just use a laptop, with a screen more than twice as big.

We should know by now that literacy doesn't appeal to everyone. It's like that indie band you love but your friends find annoying.

  3. Kids on long trips. My kids love watching a movie in the van when we're on a road trip and I don't plan on installing a 15" TV in there anytime soon.

Plus, I know there are people out there, me included, who can't read in a moving vehicle without seeing what they (I) had for lunch again.

The laptop the dvd player in the car are fine. This is more about those tiny portable thingy's with 7" or even smaller. How could anyone enjoy a movie on those?
On the big screen a movie is usually more enjoyable (forget about other factors like other visitors for a minute) than on a TV. Now scale that down to something you hold in one hand.
I don't get the appeal, for me those things are for music and thats it.

I was one of those that thought it was impossible to enjoy a movie on a 7" or smaller screen; however, I have changed my tune.

It still isn't for everyone, but my iPod video-player has proven to be very handy and much less cumbersome when traveling – especially on a plane. When the screen is basically less than two feet from your face, and the movie is something you've seen numerous times, it makes the flight more enjoyable and the traveling pack is less to deal with… which makes the security check much less stressfull.

It's still not for everyone, but it's been worth every penny for me.
