'Journey to the Center of the Earth' Sequel in the Works

Almost $250 million worldwide will do that for a franchise

Variety is reporting a story I think most of us already assumed after last year's release Journey to the Center of the Earth earned $101 million domestically and another $140 million overseas, saying New Line's reteaming with Walden Media and ContraFilm for a sequel.

The sequel will be based on Richard Outten's script "Mysterious Travels: The Lost Map of Treasure Island," in which Prof. Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) and his nephew (Josh Hutcherson) embark on a journey to a mysterious island that was the subject of three classic novels (Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island," Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels").

There is no word on a director or if the film will be shot in 3-D as was the 2008 release. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it too will be in 3-D, but I can't venture a guess on whether or not Eric Brevig will be back in the director's chair even though I remember his audio commentary on the Blu-ray discussing such a possibility.

So they want to try and make a series?
Like National Treasure, Indiana Jones, The Librarian, The Mummy….

The first wasn't actually all that bad. Silly sunday afternoon easy entertainment.
Ok I'll give the sequel a try.

I didnt mind watching this in 3D in the theatres….but I cant see myself enjoying it that much sitting at home on my NOT 3D TV.

I'm not too fond of the original, but it was far from awful, and it more or less kept my attention. I just think that if they work with a solid, tongue-in-cheek script and add more crazy 3D effects (and make the film brighter- god the first film was muddy as hell!), the sequel could work.

So what'll it be called? Journey to the…… Obviously it'll have to help people relate it to the first film.

Damn. So even a kiddie adaptation of a Jules Verne novel is getting franchised these days.

Journey to the lost island be simple but eye-catching

I think it's kind of dumb that there makeing a sequal that has nothing to do withthe book, "The lost City of Altlantis", which trevor handed sean in the end of the first movie.

I agree with this person. I just watched the movie and at the end trevor had the book about atlantis. I thought to myself It would,ve been cool to make a sequal to the movie about atlantis. and was saddened to find that the sequal had nothing to do with anything

@Ed Cadieux: It is probably there way of turning it into a third installment.

I really liked this movie. I saw it almost the first day itcame out at the movies and now watching it at home and still loving it. I would like another one about atlantis. If they make another, it would probably be called journey to atlantis ( like the ride at sea world :) )

I loved the first movie. I watch it all the time. I love Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson is adorable. I'm excited for the sequel…even if it doesn't pertain to Atlantis :)
