James Franco Gives David Letterman His Reasons for the Oscar Hosting Debacle
Is he saying it's Anne Hathaway's fault?
I can't help but believe this will stir up a hornet's nest as the following clip just hit YouTube previewing this Friday's pre-taped episode of the "Late Show With David Letterman" as James Franco discusses the negative reviews for his and Anne Hathaway's Oscar hosting duties.
The first question deals with why everyone would think he looked stoned during the show. His response, "I think I know why. Because, I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway… She has a lot of energy."
Interesting. Now he's not exactly saying it's Hathaway's fault, but it does tend to come across a little like that.
He then does tend to blame it on everyone else saying, "[Here's] the hypocritical thing. Leading up to the Oscars, I couldn't hear enough about how, Oh, people don't care about the Oscars anymore. It's dead. It's boring. It's at the end of a long awards season. Who cares about it? Well, as soon as you don't host the way they want you to, they suddenly care and they won't shut up about it."
Actually, I thought everyone had shut up about it. But this was too interesting to not mention and in all honesty I think Franco's feelings were simply hurt. In that case I do feel bad for him, but I'm not sure he's dealing with it the best he could.

He was a very bad host, regardless of his co-host or even if it wasn't the Oscars but any other show whatsoever. Anne Hathaway wasn't very good either, but at least she TRIED (in my opinion, her problem is that she tried WAY too much)
He was just there. A wall had more energy than him.
The joke is that he shat all over Ricky Gervais' hilarious hosting gig at the Golden Globes before he tried it himself and bombed.
Exactly. I guess Franco completely misjudged, what his role as a host required, and when he realized that, he just froze. Gervais is brilliant in delivering oneliners and he knows how to write could jokes, Franco obviously can do neither. I think the appearance on Letterman will be the beginning of a big PR-disaster for Franco. Quite puzzling. Doesn't he have advisers?
The major mistake with the oscars was its attempt to please the younger "hip" audience. Let's face it, if that audience is not already interested in the oscars, then they never will be. The Academy should not bother going out of their way to have a broadcast written specifically to please the young people.
I don't think it's his feelings that had been hurt but rather his ego. He looked like he didn't give a shit and let Anne Hathaway do all the work. She became more and more nervous/energetic/whatever you want to call it as the show progressed due to him standing there looking bored. Now he blames her for it. Classy.
I think you hit the nail on the head with that comment.
James Franco needs to be a man and just admit he was awful and he didn't want to do his co-hosting job . Also, he needs to stop blaming others for his unprofessionalism at the Oscars . James is hurt because this Oscar debacle hurt his professional reputation , and she came out of this debacle unscathed.
lets just be honest with ourselves… dude was stoned
If the worst failure in his life (or Hathaway's, for that matter) is bombing at hosting an overly-long awards show, then everyone involved should survive just fine. Time for him to shrug, move on and not host one again.
I think its interesting because it just seems like his ego/feelings have really been hurt by all the panning, because even though he tries to pass it off like he doesnt care, its obvious from his behavior and from things like this, that he does actually care…To me, it seems like he got nervous on that day and just adopted this "care free" attitude which didnt not go out very well…But i do think that its a very rude and stupid thing to almost blame your weak performance as a host on Anne Hathway, who at least TRIED and was energetic and didnt abandon her job as a host, cause he sure did…I cant help but think that the guy is just a terrible host cause its hard to imagine that the same actor who did 127 hrs bombed so badly at a much simpler task
