James Cameron's 'Secret' Project is 'Fantastic Voyage' in 3-D
However, he's still only mentioned as a producer
Just yesterday I posted a story headlined "James Cameron Prepping His Next Epic at Fox with Salerno? " based on a Production Weekly Twitter post that read, "James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an 'event' film set in the future."
Naturally this sent most of the online world back in time and looking at a pitch Salerno was working on with Cameron called Doomsday Protocol described as an epic science fiction adventure in the vein of Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai involving a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth. Well, that wasn't the project that was being referenced.
MTV got the word from Cameron and producer Jon Landau on the red carpet at the London premiere of Avatar and learned the project in question is a planned remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage in 3-D, with Cameron taking on the role of producer.
The original film won two Oscars and centered on scientist Jan Benes, who knows the secret to keeping soldiers shrunken for an indefinite period, escapes from behind the Iron Curtain with the help of CIA agent Grant. While being transferred, their motorcade is attacked. Benes strikes his head, causing a blood clot to form in his brain. Grant is ordered to accompany a group of scientists as they are miniaturized. The crew has one hour to get in Benes's brain, remove the clot and get out.
However, if you'll notice, MTV says Cameron will be producing with no mention of directing so it seems the jury is still out on what will be Cameron's follow-up to Avatar.

@Mason: Three very positive early reviews from The Hollywood Reporter, Empire, and Variety.
Really looking forward to seeing Avatar, and Fantastic Voyage sounds interesting. I'll wait until a director is announced before I get to excited about it though.
@Mason: I forgot to post the link in my last post:

Well, by now we all know about the incredible success of Avatar. Has shattered all box office records, thanks in part to higher ticket prices, but even without those, the numbers are awe-inspiring. Could be a long time before these numbers are topped. Might take Cameron himself to beat his own record. Can he do it with a remake of Fantastic Four in 3D? Not in a million years! It's one of those been there down that situations. To be sure, it will be visually stunning beyond any earth-bound film we've seen, but it's the human body for crying out loud! Yes, it's a marvel beyond comparison. But it's still just the human body that we've been associated with, and exposed to, for thousands of years. To capture Avatar-type dollars, it will take an Avatar-type adventure. One where we're whisked to a faraway place in a near to distant future. But if it comes on the heels of Avatar, it will be too soon. Besides, Fantastic Four doesn't begin with an A or a T. All of Cameron's biggie films have started with an A or a T. Ever notice that?? I have. Cameron certainly has. He's as superstitious as anyone else in Hollywood. So look for a new Cameron film to arrive on the scene in the next six to 10 years (assuming he still retains some of that famous Cameron patience), and almost certainly expect the title to begin with an A or a T. You can quote me. This has been Turtle Dove for Aisle Seat.
