Are we looking at a major Oscar contender?

It premiered on Access Hollywood tonight, but thankfully Warner Bros. didn't leave us to post shoddy bootlegs as the first trailer for Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar has arrived giving you a first look at the upcoming film, a film I have ranked high on several of my early Oscar predictions including Best Picture, Actor and Director.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the controversial FBI director J. Edgar Hoover with a screenplay by the Oscar-winning Milk scripter, Dustin Lance Black. DiCaprio stars alongside Armie Hammer, Judi Dench, Ed Westwick, Josh Lucas, Naomi Watts, Stephen Root, Jeffrey Donovan, Miles Fisher and Geoff Pierson and the film is set to hit limited theaters on November 9 and then expand wide on November 11 after skipping the fall film festival circuit.

I watched a little of the trailer and the first obvious takeaway is DiCaprio trying to sound like Hoover and wow does that makeup of him as an older Hoover look a bit like… Jon Voight? Armie Hammer looks like he'll add a little something great to his role as Associate Director of the FBI Clyde Tolson and I really like the music. Do I need to add Judi Dench as Hoover's mother, Anna Marie, to the list of Supporting Actress contenders

Have a look and see what you think. Are we looking at a serious Oscar contender or another Eastwood film that doesn't live up to his reputation? Personally, I think it looks epic, but that's just me.

Gosh, looks like the best Eastwood film in years and probably DiCaprio's first Oscar win.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say is "WOW!!!!!!" This looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This trailer makes up for the "de-gating" of this movie. (for those that dont know, they cut out many of the gay scenes between DiCaorio and Armie Hammer to get a Lighter rating.)

  3. C

Trailer didn't disappoint. Personally I'd put both Hammer and Dench somewhere on the supporting lists.

  4. Bartha

Wow. Leo talking slowly, looking funny, aging like no human would ever age, and a film that is marketed as an action/intrigue film when it's gonna be slow as hell. Rated R for "brief strong language." I smell desperation.

  5. MARION57

    a sure oscar bait.
best pic, actor, and director nods for sure.

  6. Matt

This looks stunning. I can definitely see this winning Best Picture, Actor, Director and Supporting Actress for either Dench or Watts.

  7. Jimmy Diamies

Could be quite good but I was underwhelmed with Dicaprio in that trailer. I just saw Dicaprio and how he talked went in and out for me. Sounded great at times and sounded like himself at times. I hope I'm wrong.

  8. A

He kinda looks like John McCain in old mode.

  9. Lewis

looks impressive. DiCaprio will have his 4th Oscar nom. a qin? too early to say. this fall's big "bio". if done right, can be great and epic.. if done wrong, a boring bio goes down like year-old bread sitting out on a counter.

Brad, while this does indeed look really good, I just saw Drive and I think it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Do you think it has any chance at a best picture nomination?

    • Brad Brevet (Post Author)

No, I'm sorry, I don't. As much as I would love to see Drive as a Best Picture nominee it's just not a movie the Academy will go for. It's a bit too raw, a bit too '80s and a bit too "auteur" in my mind.

      • C

You could say the same thing about Black Swan (other than the 80's part), but it still did pretty well last year. The September instead of December release date could hurt it a lot, though.

      • Gilmore

That's a shame. It's been a very long time since such a nuanced movie has come along. It would be wonderful if the Academy could recognize the freshness of Drive.

  11. Ian

Looks pretty good and DiCaprio looks to be in top form. Also, the Academy loves Judy Dench almost as much as they love Meryl Streep, so she should probably go on the Supporting Actress list.

It seems we finally have a picture that can lay hands on atleast 10-11 nominations …
    Best Picture
    Best Director
    Best Actor
Best Supporting Actress (could be 2 here)
    Best Supporting Actor
    Best Original Screenplay
    Best Costume Design
    Best Make-up
    Best Original Score
    Best Editing

Could be the King’s Speech of this year … though it’s difficult to tell how many of them will finally J.Edgar win … but it could be anywhere b/w 4-6

  13. I think it looks like a serious contender. I think Dench and Hammer should both be on the Oscar radar. Although, it doesn't look like Watts is featured much, based on the trailer.

  14. Steve R.

This movie looks really good, and I think it will be a big hit for Eastwood and DiCaprio.
It's about time someone made a major biographical movie about Hoover, as he was certainly one of the most powerful men in the U.S. for a large part of the 20th century.
    Can't wait to see it!

  15. Is it me or is Leonardo Di Caprio looking an awful lot like Philip Seymour Hoffmann.

  16. William Forrester

I think Leonardo will surely get a nomination for an Academy Award. I think he’ll get a Oscar nomination at least. He is incredible and he is amazing. And I think he will get it. It’s an incredible performance, just wonderful.

  17. I hope Leo finally gets an Oscar for this potentially captivating performance. I will always believe that he was robbed by Jamie Foxx in 2004. The Aviator is more engrossing than Ray on repeat viewings because of Leo's brilliant, fearless performance imo.

  18. Bradley

The trailer looks pretty good. Judi Dench and Armie Hammer are definitely being added to my supporting lists.

Warner Bros. debuted this trailer around 50 days before the films release, do you think they'll do the same with "Extremely Loud.." ?

  19. Looks great. Oscar bait for sure, but still looks very promising. Anyone else really excited for post-Winklevoss Armie Hammer? I sure as hell am.

  20. Liathach

It's interesting how the whole thing is incredibly monochrome and most of the colour has been leached out of it. It feels over-designed.

  21. I'm digging it. A real fan of the bleached out look – I think it'll fit nicely with the time, although one can never really judge with online trailers – I think it will look kickass on screen.

Leo looks to be in his element and I think Eastwood has finally found material that gets him hard again, so this should be good.

  22. MajorFilmFan

Just based on the look, feel, and, or course, the rating, I think this is gonna be "The King's Speech" of this Oscar season

  23. Allie

Armie Hammer is the only interesting thing in this trailer.

  24. Chamblee47

You guys haven't seen the film yet so how can you predict or guess the oscar chances? I mean it looks great, but still.
