International Trailer for 'Che' Arrives
I can't get as excited for this as I once was...
The build up for Steven Soderbergh's Che has sort of come and gone in my mind. The film had a gradual growth of excitement on its way to Cannes and it seems like it has been downhill ever since. Something about that 4+ hour runtime has me entirely disinterested sounding like a film filled with more pomp than substance. It all seems so unnecessary.
I can't say it has polarized critics either as many seem to either be lukewarm on it or overall uninterested. Many admit there are flashes of brilliance and it is very well acted, but it is starting to seem like there may be no real reason for it to exist.
Of course once it is screened here in Seattle I will definitely be checking it out since I am not an L.A. resident I wasn't able to attend the most recent screening, which would have been nice, but I am also hoping once it does screen for review purposes here that they break it up into two screenings on two days as opposed to back to back with an intermission in between. I am not sure if this is a subject matter I will be able to tolerate for that length.
The film is set to hit theaters in New York and L.A. on December 12 and then expand in early January as well as being available on video on demand and at Blockbuster.
The film centers on Cuban rebel Ernesto "Che" Guevara (Benicio del Toro), an Argentine doctor who shares a common goal with Fidel Castro – to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. He proves indispensable as a fighter, and quickly grasps the art of guerrilla warfare. As he throws himself into the struggle, Che is embraced by his comrades and the Cuban people. The film tracks Che's rise in the Cuban Revolution, from doctor to commander to revolutionary hero.
All that said, here is the new international trailer.
