'Inglourious Basterds' and 'Nine' Lead the Way with the Predictable BFCA
I'm bored just putting this together...
The Broadcast Film Critics Association likes to think of themselves as the most significant awards predicting the Oscar nominees and winners. Considering they open their categories to six nominees when need be it makes for very few surprises with any of them. So of course their noms will closely mirror the Oscars, it also makes for quite the predictable group of awards. As a matter of fact I don't think you will be surprised by a single nominee below as their selections seem more like an Oscar prediction table than an actual group trying to award what they feel are the best in the business. This may very well be what they believe the best in the business to be, but if your only value is to be an early Oscars preview what's the point?
Either way, Inglourious Basterds and Nine received the most mentions with 10 nominations each. You tell me, any surprise additions or omissions in this bunch? The Critics’ Choice Awards will be held Friday, January 15, 2010 and I believe broadcast for the first time at 9:00pm PST on VH1.

I can't understand why "Nine" is getting so much love. It's been tepidly reviewed.
wow Avatar did well for itself, go Basterds! a battle between Taratino and Cameron would definately save the Oscar telecast
well im suprised Public Enemies didnt get a single nomination
With the exception of Nine (Seriously it has a 36% on RT right now even with Daniel Day-Lewis!) This looks like a pretty solid list, if I had to guess though, unless things pick up Nine is going to get replaced by Where The Wild Things Are when the oscars nom are confirmed because not even the Weinstiens can get a movie this poorly received nominated. (Of course I've been wrong before.)
I am slightly surprised that A Single Man didn't get a best picture nomination ahead of A Serious Man
Im happy to say that nine got some nominations, but it diddnt get the ones i was expecting. Marion of course deserves it but what about Danile, and Rob? HMMMMMMM….i guess we will see what goes down tomorow with the globes.
I'm surprised at Emily Blunt getting a nom…especially when Cornish is no where to be seen.
Like you said, boring list.
@The Big L: Yeah, I knew she was in the running, but I'm surprised that she actually got the nom. I'm fine with that though, cause I'm a big fan of Emily Blunt.
I'm also confused at Marion Cotillard's nom. She's being put up for the Oscars as a lead actress, but all the other awards keep putting her in the supporting category…
I do wish the Oscars had an acting ensemble category. That way Star Trek could get another nomination.
Overall I'm pleased with the list. Nice to see that they added a few more categories this year, like Sound and editng. Very surprised to see Tarantino get a directing nod.
…and Peter Sarsgaard suffers another loss…
Why on EARTH is The Proposal nominated?
I'm sad to see they didn't nominate Terminator Salvation for Best Cinematography or at least Best Action Movie? The sets for the apocalyptic future were amazing in that movie.
So since both Avatar and Up were both nominated for Best Picture here, will they be nominated at the Oscars?
I am really happy with the list.
NINE- I am so glad it led! This is a great movie! One of the best. I am suprised Daniel Day-Lewis didnt get a nom as long as with Rob.
THE LOVELY BONES- Happy with the noms. I think Peter Jackson should of gotten a best dir. nom
Happy that Christian McKay got some recognition for his amazing turn as Orson Welles. That movie is delightful and it is unfortunate it hasn't found a wider audience.
Yay for Karen O getting noms for original score and song for "WTWTA", boo for (once again) Lance Acord's cinematography being ignored.
ok, not a SINGLE surprise? are you SERIOUS brad?
yes, MOST of them are pretty much copied from your tables (haha) – but please, since when was viggo mortenson for 'the road' ever a possibility? and there is no 'a single man' in best picture, instead there is 'a serious man' (what are your thoughts on that? is 'a serious man' good?) then there's also the fact that i didn't ever think emily blunt was THAT close behind the 5 frontrunners in the actress race.
in the 'young actor' category, i realy REALLYY hope that saoirse takes it – she is an absolutely amazing young actress, she is probably the most talented around right now (a thousand times better than dakota fanning, thats for sure)
out of all the categories, the 'best score' is really surprisng me – i had no idea 'sherlock holmes' or 'princess and the frog' had such good scores… (or do they..)
overall, i am actually quite happy to have these awards, as boring as their nominations are, i think its actually really good to see a vague outline of what the oscars will bring as far as technical awards go, because you dont really cover them. i actually recon that cinematography will be one of the hardest to decide a winner for, other than ofcourse best direction and picture.
who are you particular favourites for best picture, brad? and also one more question, in ur opinion, is 'up in the air' really jason reitman's masterpiece? because think about it, if he wins the best picture and best director, well that basically is saying "this film is to me what titanic was to james cameron or what the lotr was to peter jackson", dont you think? i havent actually seen any of the best picture nominees yet except for inglorious basterds (which i totally loved), an education (a good enjoyable film, but not all that oscar worthy in my opinion) and up (which i totally do not understand the hype about, i really did not like it that much, was actually pretty boring!). but, i would love to see precious take hom best picture! and best director i would really love to go to the hurt locker because it'd be like the 4th woman in oscar history! :D
