'Inception,' 'Tron,' 'Alice,' 'Potter' and 'Pilgrim' All Make the 2010 Oscar Visual Effects Short List
Now which one is the front-runner for the win?
The Academy has snipped that list of 15 Visual Effects Oscar contenders down to a more manageable seven, which is to say you now have to decide which two films will not be nominated for Best Visual Effects as this will be the first year five films are nominated in the category.
The seven films left are listed below. I've ranked them in order of how I perceive them to currently stand with Inception being my predicted front-runner for the Oscar.
- Inception
- TRON: Legacy
- Alice in Wonderland
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
- Scott Pilgrim vs the World
- Hereafter
- Iron Man 2
—————————-
The films that didn't end up making the cut from the previous list of 15 include The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Shutter Island, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Unstoppable. Should one of them made the cut over the seven above?
What do you think? Do you agree we're probably looking at a battle between Scott Pilgrim, Hereafter and Iron Man 2 for that fifth slot or do you see one of my top four having a hard time getting a nomination? Sound off below!
The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT and I will be here bright and early to deliver them. For all of my current Oscar predictions click here.

It it nice to see Scott Pilgrim getting a little bit of love anyway…
Hereafter is a definite no, so the fifth spot really seems like it is between Scott Pilgrim and Iron Man. I hope Scott Pilgrim gets a nomination over Iron Man, the visuals really added so much to the film and helped sell the world, story and atmosphere. And they were definitely used in a unique way.
I would have liked to see Unstoppable get a nom to give practical effects some loving. But oh well.
Tron was great, but how can it be nominated after everyone kept criticizing Jeff Bridges' ridiculously badly done face?
Hah, my predictions for visuals were correct.
@Feedback, because of the nice looking vehicles and the battles
I have to say, I'm happily surprised that Scott Pilgrim still has a shot.
Hereafter over Unstoppable? Seriously, i didn't really see too much visuals in Hereafter, the tidal wave was nice to look at, but didn't do the film justice
I hope Inception wins the Oscar for Best Visual Effects! I thought the scene where the side roads & buildings started lifting up to the other side and then connecting together, That was so awesome!
I might actually put Iron Man in over Harry Potter. Just a hunch. Inception is probably the frontrunner, unless they decide to lock it out of wins. In that case it probably goes to Tron or Alice.
Why will there be 5 nominees this year?
Too many films with amazing visuals to limit to just 3
Tron, Inception, and Alice are in, easily. I think any one of the others could snag one of the remaining two slots. Personally, I think Pilgrim is vastly over-rated and Hereafter is seriously under-appreciated. Pilgrim had innovative use of vfx, but he vfx themselves were nothing spectacular. Cool in an eye-candy way but not ground-breaking. Iron Man 2 & Potter left me feeling been there, done that. Hereafter seriously had me thinking, wow, how did they do that? Don't discount that innovation "wow" factor when the vfx branch narrows this down to 5, as they tend to really appreciate that kind of stuff, and rightfully so.
The first three will be the three up for the Oscar.
There are actually 5 slots this year, for the first time.
Scott all the way.
