'Inception,' 'Grit,' 'Shutter,' 'Swan' and 'Social' Nominated by Cinema Audio Society
Nice to 'Network' get its due
I can't tell you how happy I am to see the Cinema Audio Society nominate The Social Network alongside Black Swan, Inception, Shutter Island and True Grit for most outstanding sound mixing of the year (via EW).
Along with the script and editing, the sound work on The Social Network stands out above everything else, namely the Facemash and Ruby Skye scenes. Sure, they are just scenes of a guy blogging and hacking and then two guys just having a conversation in a noisy nightclub, but they are two of the best technically constructed scenes of the year. I just wish the rest of the film had been as interesting as those two scenes were from a filmmaking aspect.
Otherwise, both Black Swan and Inception are obvious noms in this category while Shutter Island and True Grit pretty much fill the four and five slot, though Grit had some subtleties I can appreciate. Primarily one scene I remember where Mattie wakes in a fever and LaBeouf is in her room, but at first all you hear is the striking of a match as LaBeouf lights his pipe.
The other film I particularly thought stood out from a sound perspective was 127 Hours and I'm surprised to see either True Grit or Shutter Island get the nod here over that film.
As for my current Oscar predictions in the category, I had The Social Network in tenth with other omissions here such as TRON: Legacy and Unstoppable above it, thinking it would be overlooked. Happy to see I was wrong… I'll have to now take another look at those picks. I wonder if the Motion Picture Sound Editors will follow suit.

Still would like to see that list of every film this year. The Social Network will probably top it (though im not too fond of it. Facebook, the movie? never got my head around it).
If you think it's "Facebook: The Movie", then you've never seen it. Simple as that.
Nope, he never did.
I did. It was alright, just i never thought of it as an ideal topic for a film
If anyone thought The Social Network was "Facebook The Movie", they well and truly did not 'get' the film makers intentions WHATSOEVER.
I didn't think of it as Facebook: The Movie, that's what i thought when it was announced. Garfield's performance was great, but i hated the way they portrayed Zuckerberg.
The sound of True Grit impressed more than just that introductory scene with Lebouf. Every time a gunshot went off I thought it was so well edited that it made me jump out of my seat by how sudden and startling it was. There was the subtltey of the wind and hissing snakes among so many other fine points of audio work that I couldn't stop thinking about. Grit or Network are the most deserving to me. Inception has it's moments, the glass shattering during Ariadne's dream is one, but for a fair amount of the film, particuarly that opening sequence, the sound was so obnoxious that it drowned out the majority of the dialogue. Not what I would call an acomplishment. The only technical achievements that I find Inception deserving of are it's art-direction and visual effects. I'm tempted to put score down, but it's honestly a little distracting for me at times. How to Train Your Dragon on the other hand…beautiful music.
Sorry for the rant.
I found the sound of Inception to be immaculate when seen in IMAX.
Well, unfortunatley it's not being screened in that medium anymore.
How do you think the IMAX helped it's sound work though? Cause my biggest issue was the lack of clarity it created with the exchange between characters.
All I can say is I had none of those problems in my regular screening, but noticed maximum clarity when I saw it in IMAX.
I always thought The Social Network would get recognized here; the sound in those two scenes is absolutely brilliant. Inception and True Grit are obvious choices; Black Swan probably wouldn't be at face value, but once you see the film, it definitely belongs. Shutter Island is a bit surprising to me; I also would have thought Tron and Unstoppable would have been more likely picks. I wondered whether Shutter Island would get mentioned at all since it came out almost a year ago, and I figured that it's only chance at a dark horse Best Pic nomination would be if it was being talked about in the smaller categories. Now that it is, I still wouldn't put it in the field (nor do I think it deserves to be there), but it would probably be my first dark horse pick after the eleven that have been talked about for a couple months now.
Back to sound, I think it will be a split at the Oscars this year, with The Social Network winning mixing and Inception winning editing.
Personally, I will be quite satisfied if "The Social Network" wins Best Picture. I found it thrilling and wildly entertaining throughout, plus extremely well-made. Right now I have it listed as my #2 movie of the year (after "Inception"). It's too bad that you, Brad, don't like it as much. I guess that happens. I guess your feelings towards TSN are similar to my feelings towards "The Hurt Locker" last year, which I think didn't deserve BP at all, or even a nomination. Kathryn Bigelow didn't even deserve Best Director, but I'm not mad about that because it IS high time a woman won.
