'Inception' and 'Social Network' Scripts Top the WGA Awards
Sorkin also takes home USC Scripter Award
No big surprises here as the Writers Guild of America announced their winners tonight and Aaron Sorkin's script for The Social Network and Christopher Nolan's script for Inception took home top honors. Charles Ferguson's script for Inside Job was also awarded for Best Documentary Screenplay.
It's important to note that screenplays for Oscar nominated films such as The King's Speech, Winter's Bone, Toy Story 3 and Another Year were all ineligible for the WGA awards as the WGA restricts "nominations to films that are written for productions that are signatories to the guild's Minimum Basic Agreement, or the agreements of several affiliated international guilds… their purpose is to honor the best films produced by WGA members, or under WGA guidelines."
So, if you currently predict David Seidler's screenplay for The King's Speech is the likely Oscar winner over Nolan's Inception script then perhaps these awards don't mean as much to you. I, however, think Nolan's still the front-runner. On another note, if you're interested in reading Nolan's Inception script you can get that here, Sorkin's script you can click here and for Seidler's King's Speech script click here.
This was Sorkin's second big win of the weekend as he and author Ben Mezrich were the winners of the 2011 USC Scripter Award. The other nominees for that award were The Ghost Writer, Winter's Bone, True Grit and 127 Hours.

I think the king's speech is in the original category, sadly it will win in that category. Finally it is nice to see Nolan win something.
Why would it be sad to have The King's Speech win? The script was phenomenal.
Agreed M!. And it was about something that really mattered to the world. Most of us weren't around at the beginning of WWII. I knew from school that the speech was important, but I never knew that the king almost was unable to deliver it. If the British people had not gotten behind the war effort the world would be a very different place today.
I'm soooo happy for Nolan… he deserved at least one major award (especially after being snubbed for best director by the Academy, even more annoying considering the fact that directing was one of Inception's strong points… more so than writing but :] anyways). Oh and I am happy for Sorkin too. First time I have felt good about an industry award's outcome so far this awards season. :o
You have to be a writer to be in the WGA and we honored the two who we thought did the best job. Doesn't mean "The Social Network" and "Inception" are the best films, simply that they are the best written. In other words, these should have been terrific movies (and they were) because the directors started out with a great foundation. It's the same reason why a film like "Avatar" did not win best film, the story was so-so and the writing weak. Such a shame Cameron doesn't give up on the screen writing. He's a weak writer as best – "Titanic" anyone??? Imagine how great his films would be if he allowed a real craftsman to write it.
Neal, Ori, sorry to hear bout the Green Hornet thingy or whatever. What were you thinking?!! You HAD my script.
Oh well…call me.

Sorkin's screenplay will absolutely win. It's the best thing about a really good movie. Without the screenplay the Social Network would have been nothing more than a blip.
