What have your expectations for this one become?

Coming Soon debuted the French poster for James Cameron's Avatar, which is featured at the bottom of this post and I won't be surprised if it gets a rough reception from readers.

I've started to realize where this film is going to find its largest group of detractors, people expecting James Cameron's Aliens or Terminator 2 films. Instead, Avatar looks like it is gearing up for a family-friendly appeal. I recently opened the door to the possibility of the film getting a PG-rating, which many people were none too happy about and then just yesterday I received the following email from a reader named 'AZ':

I have news that Avatar will most likely be rated PG due to the fact that McDonald's will be having tie-in toys for the movies' release. McDonald's always has toys based on movies rated PG or below. If Burger King had the tie-in toys it would most likely be PG-13.

UPDATED: The image to the right from HappyMeal.com confirms there will be a partnership with McDonald's and Fox as well confirmed the news as well.

Of course, this sounds like a lot of speculation and I have no idea what the history of film marketing at McDonald's has been but I did notice Star Trek and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith were both partnered with Burger King while McDonald's partnered on the more friendly Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, I wasn't able to find any evidence 20th Century Fox will be partnering with McDonald's on Avatar, but I am checking with the studio.

Now, take a look at this latest poster and weigh in with what direction you think the marketing is headed. Avatar is sure to be a visual feast, but will expectations and anticipation hurt it?

Personally I am hoping Avatar is the game changer we all heard it will be. I can say that after seeing A Christmas Carol and Zemeckis's continued failure to add life to the eyes of his motion-capture characters Avatar already has a leg up there. Now I just have my fingers crossed the story can bring the same kind of success.

If you want more Avatar, you can get the plot-revealing score track listing at The Playlist and Reelz Channel (via Slash Film) has an interview with composer James Horner in which he reveals the film's running time is very close to three hours in length.

McDonalds had Batman toys way back in the day (that tied in with the 90s ones), and all of those carried a PG-13 rating. I have no doubt "Avatar" will be PG-13. A PG would alienate much of the fanboy crowd.

    and the poster is "meh"

Looks fine. Some people need to realize that the trailers/music/posters that get my ass in the seat aren't the same media that would interest my mom, who asked me about Avatar last time we talked after she heard the Leona Lewis stuff on the radio.
We've all experienced bait and switch marketing before, it can be used both ways.
Besides, would anybody be shocked by multiple Bluray versions or extended, unrated theatrical re-releases?

I'm just curious what James Cameron thinks of it all.

  4. Sebastian

at the tickets that were sold on avatar day it said PG-13 on them very clearly. Also at the website it said Parent should have consideration of bringing their children.

Have you seen the freakin trailer for this movie???? It will undoubtedly receive a PG-13 rating……..Also, that whole thing about McDonalds not promoting PG-13 movies is a total crock. McDonalds has promoted the following PG-13 rated films

    Armageddon
    Jurassic Park
    Batman
    Batman Forever
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

I'm sure theres more that i cant think of off the top of my head.

Furthermore……..the shittyness of that poster makes me want to vomit

Fox would be even more fucking stupid than they normally are if they were to release this with a PG.

And why the hell are they being so weird with the marketing of this movie? They normally know how to do some good marketing, even if they screw around with their filmmakers. They're especially good marketing films that other people have made, like "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Juno" and "Slumdog Millionaire," or "Taken." Can't they get their act together with "Avatar"? They should, if it really did cost $300mil, or even if it cost "only" $200mil. That's a whole lot of money on the line.

The poster looks fine, whatever. Looks like "The Curious Case of the Smurfette" if you ask me.

As far as I know, it's always been James Cameron's intention to make Avatar his very own Star Wars, isn't it?

I never expected a great, mature action movie. I expect something like the very first Star Wars, extremely kid friendly with great action sequences, lame dialogues and a 'okay then' storyline.

And all those qualities didn't prevented Star Wars to be one of the most influentials movies in Hollywood history. If Avatar is trying to match that, why all the cry from the fanboys?

LOL it looks like big globs of sh*t floating in the air. I sincerely hope this movie is great, but …. LOL just don't ever mass market that poster HERE

Who cares if it's PG. A rating doesn't make a film.

It's not a terrible poster. This one is much worse:

@WillE: Just a conversation is all.

Let's remember who we're talking about here. This is James Cameron people. Just look at his track record: Piranha 2, Terminator, Aliens, T2 – all received an R-rating. The Abyss, True Lies and Titanic – all received an R-rating. Does anyone else start to see a pattern here? James Cameron just doesn't do PG films. He's not George Lucas (although kudos to Mr. Star Wars for garnering a PG-13 rating for Episode III) or Steven Speilberg. He directs films for young adults (11+), teens, college kids and adults. Does that necessarily mean that Avatar won't be rated PG-13? No; however, I highly doubt it.

Judging by the trailer, I see this film being more along the lines of The Lord of the Rings as opposed to Chronicles of Narnia.

  14. The Jackal

Correction: I meant to say The Abyss, True Lies & Titanic all received a PG-13 rating

McDonalds had merchandise for Batman Forever back in 1995, and that was PG-13. Same thing could go for this movie.

quote: …an interview with composer James Horner in which he reveals the film's running time is very close to three hours in length…

IMDB has listed the running time for a few weeks now as 166 minutes (2:46) in case anyone's counting. That makes it Cameron's second longest Theatrical release after Titanic (194 min) and third longest overall after The Abyss Special Edition (171 min). The real question is whether we can stand wearing 3-D glasses that long. Will any of the IMAX shows NOT be 3-D?

I don't understand when people refer to the hardcore"Fanboys" for Avatar. Is there an actual Star Wars or comic book type following for this movie, or is it just the James Cameron fans and the sci-fi fans who have heard about this movie for years? I'm just wondering cuz I still haven't run into people who are DYING to see this movie you know? Sci-Fi is a very hard genre to get people excited about. You either like it or don't, no matter who directed it or who is starring in it or if it's in 3D or whatever. As popular as Star Wars or Star Trek is, there are people who still can't stand it to this day.
I am convinced that is going to hurt Avatar's box office returns: the large group of average movie-goers who might catch it in theaters, might wait for blu-ray….

I dunno, I personally don't care if it gets tagged PG or PG-13, but it seems like this movie would be scary for kids, even if McDonald's backs it. The movie seems kind of epic, maybe even boring, for the same little kid who gets entertained by G-Force you know?

  18. Just Myself

@The Jackal: True Lies was definitely rated R.

And there's no way this is a family film. PG, PG-13, whatever the rating, it's not meant for kids.

At least his 5 o'clock shadow is in focus, must be an important plot device?

  20. k-dogg

"Dances with Smurfs!" At least the South Park episode mocking it was funny. I won't even go near a theater for it. I have a ps3, so I can get the same special effects on a dozen crummy games. Nothing about this movie looks good, much less revolutionary. I can't for the life of me understand the hype.

  21. Orgy

@Matt B.: You forget you're wearing glasses very quickly – especially since the first section of the film is mostly people talking to each other. It gets you settled in, so the big action scenes can do their job.

  22. pomme

since i heard Avatar song,i'm less(but really less) exciting!
