Ian McShane is Aboard as Blackbeard in 'Pirates 4'
Just where will the story go?
Ian McShane ("Deadwood") will play legendary pirate Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides reports Heat Vision.
Blackbeard's real name was Edward Teach and he was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies during the early 1700s. However, in Tim Powers's book, "On Stranger Tides," of which the film has found basis for its story, Wikipedia offers this description of the story:
This book follows the exploits of John "Jack Shandy" Chandagnac, who travels to the new world after the death of his puppeteer father to confront his uncle, who apparently has made off with the family inheritance. During the voyage, he gets to know a woman named Beth Hurwood and her father Benjamin Hurwood, an Oxford professor. Before they arrive, their ship is waylaid by pirates and, with the help of the professor and his assistant, the captain is killed and Chandagnac is forced to join the pirate crew. The reader discovers a sinister plot being concocted by the professor involving his dead wife, his living daughter, the Fountain of Youth, and Blackbeard. Chandagnac, now known as "Jack Shandy", must put a stop to these plans and save Beth Hurwood.
The inclusion of the Fountain of Youth has pretty much been known from the end of the third film and ever since production of the fourth was announced. But just how much Jack Sparrow will there be if the original Powers story centers on John Chandagnac?
Talking to Cinematical, Johnny Depp said, "There's no Keira [Knightley] or Orlando [Bloom] in there, [but] I don't know. I don't think we'd ever throw too much Jack Sparrow in there. There will be a little bit of everybody."
Based on the Wikipedia description, my only guess would be that Sparrow gets mixed up in the exploits of John and Beth, much like he got involved with Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) and Will Turner (Bloom) in the first three films, all of which will result in a meeting with Blackbeard, replacing the villainous Barbossa played by Geoffrey Rush. This is, of course, only speculation. Who knows how Penelope Cruz fits into the mix as Heat Vision describes her character as Jack's foil and equal.
Filming on the fourth film in the franchise begins in Hawaii this summer for a May 20, 2011 release.

So based on this article I assume Depp is still in the flick then? I'm actually am excited to see McShane as Blackbeard, he certainly looks the part. :)
Oh yeah, there's never been a doubt Depp has been in.
They paid Depp over $50mil to return. Of course he's still in. He's by far the largest reason that first film turned into a franchise in the first place.
If Johnny Depp quits then the franchise would also stop moving…this is the only franchise which will never be re-made or re-booted in future coz Depp has made Sparrow immortal and it cant be re-created by someone else…be rest assured that our grandchildrens or their grandchildrens(if the world exist till that time) will never see this franchise starting afresh in their times……
Yes, Depp is still on board to play as Captain Jack Saprrow in Pirates 4.
well, there's no way it could be worse than At World's End, especially with a real source, Penelope Cruz, and Rob Marshall.
This is at least the second best bit of news i've heard yet, next the the best news that Johnny Depp is returning. But, what about Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, isn't he returning too???.
I hope they have more Sparow than usual. We hardly saw him in Pirates 3
I can't help it. The second and third weren't any good, but seeing Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow has me has me really excited. This film will definitely be my must-see film of the year.
There is no Jack Shandy character AND a Jack Sparrow, because Jack Sparrow will be the Jack Shandy character. They, of course, will replace the Shandy character with Sparrow's, because of the "JS" initials reference. It's all too coincidental to be by accident. It's what they wanted when they chose the title "On Stranger Tides". They thought of these ideas for the 4th movie, turned out half of it was already a book of the same name, and then went ahead and got the rights to do an adaptation.
Hopefully this will be more Curse of the Black Pearl than At World's End.
Anyone else feel that – just like the Matrix trilogy – the second 2 films were so bad, they almost retroactively ruined the first?
Miranda, No it does not feel "entirely" like the last two ruined the first!. But, at least they are going to make the fourth movie feel like the first movie!. They are planning on also making a Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Pirates of the Caribbean 6, if Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides tides is successful in the box office world wide!.
I must admit that I am looking forward to the next 'Pirates' installment, but like somebody posted above, why no Geoffrey Rush in this film? He's amazing!
Andrew,
Geoffrey Rush is returning as Captain Barbossa, go back to ropeofsilicon.com's main Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides webpage, his name is on there.
Wellllllllllll
I fell "in love" with Ian McShane long before JD in PofC. And Ian has aged very nicely indeed. He'll make a terrific pirate.
Check Ian out in Deadwood and Pillars of the Earth, not to mention his Lovejoy series.
