Will the fans be happy about this?

Fans didn't seem too impressed when Kevin mentioned the rumors that Josh Hutcherson (The Kids are All Right) and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) were the front-runners to play the baker's son Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne respectively in the upcoming adaptation of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games. Today it seems they're just going to have to get over it as the two have officially joined the production.

In a press release Lionsgate announced Hutcherson and Hemsworth will join the previously cast Jennifer Lawrence in the adaptation that takes place in a society in which districts pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl who are forced to fight to the death on live TV.

The release gave the following character descriptions for Peeta and Gale:

Peeta accompanies heroine Katniss Everdeen into the 74th annual Hunger Games as the male tribute chosen from their native District 12, the most remote and marginalized district of all the subjugated districts of Panem. At the outset of the Games, Peeta publicly confesses his longtime feelings for Katniss, setting up one of the most fascinating fictional rapports of all time with his supposed arena rival.

Though Katniss and Gale have never had a romantic relationship, they share a transcendent bond, often of few words. When Katniss volunteers to participate in the 74th Annual Hunger Games in her younger sister’s stead, they both presume that bond will carry her far through the horrors she will face in the arena, and they each silently hope they’ll be reunited in safety on the other side of the ordeal.

Production on the film will get underway this summer under the direction of Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) with a script from Billy Ray (Breach) for a March 23, 2012 release.

I haven't read the books but in past few months I heard A LOT about them. From the list of actors up for the role of Peeta, Josh Hutcherson seems the best actor.

  2. I agree with Elizabeth. I think it's a good choice.

I like both of them, so yes. Please pick them.

  4. I am SO pleased to hear that Josh Hutcherson has the role!! I've been rooting for him all along :) It seems that fans' main concern with him is that his hair is brown instead of blond. I think that there are more important factors to consider, such as…acting…especially since they can dye his hair if it's that important :)

  5. As a fan of the books, happy Josh Hutcherson get the part. As for Hemsworth, I have never seen The Last Song or his other projects, but knowing he was a part of it makes me dislike his casting anyway.

I've never read the books, but it seems like they went for the acting over the "look." Out of all of the actors mentioned previously, Hutcherson is the only one with the acting chops to act opposite of Lawrence. Don't know about Hemsworth. I didn't see The Last Song.

I don't think they went with the acting chops in the case of Hemsworth. I'm really not sure what they were thinking. As for Hutcherson, I've never really been impressed with him, and I can't picture him as Peeta. Also, I think he may be shorter than Jennifer Lawrence which could be a problem. It seems like bad casting for both parts, in my opinion. I hope they prove me wrong, though.

I agree with Eric, this is just bad.
